Hide Button

My last opinion on the OT stuff. I think the new hide rule for this thread is an over reaction to a lull a couple days ago that found a time period where it seemed like a few folks were using the forum for a private conversation on a completely unrelated subject. Yea, definately take that to chat or PM but I have gotten very adept at scanning , on my phone, posts I care to read or not. I have no problem with that and a lot of the OT stuff is fun, informative and draws people together. I would much rather scan those than have to stop and click on show buttons. Especially a post that has , I don't know, 50? 100? Show buttons?! I stopped at about 30. That was enjoyable.
I appreciate the show button when it hides a ton of detail for a summary type statement.

Please move :)

I agree... but the pages of long binary stuff and the pages of best brewing techniques got a little old. The occasional football score or office talk or my dog had puppies never really bothered me.

What a crock. So people have to scan for thanks now when they want to read on topic? Every time someone posts a picture of their car, has a dream about a phone, or Steven says "don't kill anyone" there are 30 thanks.

If you have time in the day to chit-chat about meaningless nothings, you can hit the Show button.

Have to agree with this, and it works this way on many other forums I'm on. Just simply put OT right before the OT content. It stands out. And its easy to scroll by if it doesn't interest you.

Not to mention the hide requirement has made the forum downright unreadable. It doesn't matter if its the mobile app or if its on the cpu. With regard to the GNEX pre-release thread, it's a LONG thread. Every time I refresh it there's 3 more pages to read at least. And with hide tags, I can't just sit back and scroll through quickly. I have to make constant clicks and more clicks and more clicks and more clicks and more clicks and more clicks just to follow what's going on and see if it might interest me. It's beyond frustrating and irritating. Not to mention what each person considers off topic, another person might not. Now maybe I just missed an interesting post because of it.

Conversely, it's much easier for someone not interested in the content to scroll right on by. And they don't really save any time because the post still physically exists.

In the end you really need to make a decision, either allow off topic posts or don't allow 'em. By trying this hidden crap, you just make your forum unreadable and if I get frustrated enough, I'll go somewhere else to follow pre-release rumors.

Someone sounds upset. Don't take our SUGGESTIONS so personally.
 
I am new to the forum so I can tell you how I feel about it as a new person. I personally find the hide tags way more time consuming. I know the attempt was good, but it makes it much harder to scan the thread. As a new person coming in, I can say I knew there would be a lot of off topic post as it said so in the op and the title pretty much says so. It encourages "speculation" which in turn, encourages friendly and/or debatable conversations.

Plus, if anyone wants to find any useful info, its always in the op. Or a smart person can do what I did when I first joined and was catching up, just scan until you see a lot of thanks. That's a sign of an important post. Unless its something posted by a mod, then everyone thanks it no matter what just to get Brownie points. Lol

Don't take the Show button so personally. The point of a thread is to discuss the topic. We have lounge/off topic threads for shootin the virtual crap with your virtual friends.

I agree the hide button is ridiculous and getting out of hand. If someone WANTS to use it then fine. But to force everyone to do it is stupid. The OP has ALWAYS said its a lounge type thread and off topic conversations are acceptable and expected. So what is there to complain about? I just don't get it.

How would you feel if you were driving 60mph in a posted 60mph zone, but you got stopped and given a speeding ticket bc despite the sped limit sign, the neighbors said you should have been driving 50mph instead.

I for one refuse to use the hide tag and don't really care if I get banned. The OP says off topic conversation is acceptable donor either is or isn't.

Lets just take a deep breath here, no one is threatening anyone with a ban, seriously guys/gals, lets ALL of us not take this so seriously.

I personally thought this was a good idea but that is just me. I'm not even really participating in the thread.

I see the point of hide tags if you are actually in that thread to get nexus information and dont wanna wade through 40,000 off-topic posts. That being said thread will be done with soon (hopefully) so I don't see the harm in doing it either way till the end.

The thread is actually readable now, and yet there are still a ton of posts. I didn't log in from 8pm to 8am and there were almost 500 posts to read even without anything at all happening last night.

That's not a good analogy. More like, you're driving at 70, then you see the posted limit drop from 70 to 45.

The OP says and has always said it is okay to go off topic because I posted that in there. It's the second thread in our history to have that notice.

It NOW says to use hide tags, because some of us, including me, believe that the thread has a purpose beyond forcing people to read 200 pages a day of nonsense. This, however, still allows for the OT posts. This is the only thread (outside of the lounge) on AF where it is explicitly allowed.

Please do not choose to go 70 in a 45 and try to stick it to the man. Sorry you don't agree with the change - but there are better ways to voice that. If you would like examples, scroll up and read some other posts.
