Root High battery drain after installing CTMod...

This morning I decided to re-install CTMod. After I got everything set up the way I like it, I noticed that it was kinda plowing through the battery. So I charged it up and unplugged it again, and it's still quickly going down. (more quickly than normal, to the tune of about 10% / hour) -- Actually, according to GSam Battery Monitor, it's gone through 9% in 42 minutes. And just switched to 10% in 47 minutes...

Anyway, That's after I rebooted to make sure everything started fresh. So I started looking a little further. I see that CPU Spy is showing zero time in deep sleep since I rebooted. and about 36 of the 50 minutes at 220MHz, which is what I currently have set as the Min Frequency.

So, back to GSam Battery Monitor, I look in the "app sucker" screen, and see that there's not really anything taking a ton of CPU time, but when I look at "Time Held Awake" it's showing that the "kernel (Android OS)" has held the CPU awake for 37m 21s.

I don't believe this is normal, so I decided to boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache to see if that does anything... Just for kicks I "fixed permissions" too.

So, I'm just gonna let it sit quietly on my desk to see if will go into deep sleep in the next half hour or so....

... Minutes pass ...

It appears to still be draining fairly quickly, and not be going into deep sleep still. Any other suggestions beyond what I've already done?

Thanks for that, Bloodawn, I just installed it and will see what happens. Although at some point about an hour after I posted this whatever was holding the phone awake seems to have calmed down. Now the battery use chart looks more like a bunny slope as opposed to the steep black Diamond slope of earlier today.
(if you understand the skiing analogy)

I'll keep you posted.

So, it seems to be doing this again. A good long time with no deep sleep. I have the app installed, what exactly should I be looking at?

It looks like WiFi is holding it awake most of the time ("wlan_rx_wake" 3h 14m), based on Better Battery Stats. What is the recommended setting for WiFi sleep policy? I don't like to turn it off, because of background updates using up data. And I thought that WiFi usually took less battery draw than 3g does. Am I wrong?

Is it the ROM, or the kernel that is keeping it awake? I didn't think it was keeping WiFi awake all the time before. (I'm running CTMod 3.8 with the non-overclocked kernel)

Also, it appears that second biggest culprit is "unknown_wakeups". About 1h 13m. Any idea what that could be caused by? I know it says "unknown", so maybe not, but is there a way to reduce that?

There is also a significant amount of time spent in "twl4030_usb_connection". About 1h 7m. What is that, and is there anything I can do to reduce that?

That's a good start, anyway. I guess I'll set my WiFi to sleep, and see if that helps.

I've always left all my phones at the default wifi settings, which for the marquee is "When screen turns off". so try setting it at that and see if helps.

unknown could be some app, but I'm not sure.

twl4030_usb_connection just means you had the phone plugged in. it doesn't sleep while its charging.

Ok I'm still getting a little bit of the "unknown" wakelock but very minimal. Last night I decided to reflash the CTMod ROM fresh and start over. I didn't do a bulk install from titanium backup, but went through and installed one by one those that I need now and will install others as they are needed.

I already am seeing a significant improvement in the battery life and usage in general. Thanks for the advice and suggestion to use the Better Battery Stats app. That should be a great help in continuing to tweak this to be more enjoyable to use.

I also have left the Wifi settings as default which seems to be working fine so far.

Just a quick update. I'm sure I'll have more questions at some point, and I am sure I'll get friendly helpful advice as I have received every time so far. Thank you for your time.

All I can say is WOW! I am now getting Amazing battery life! I had about 45% battery left last night and decided to not plug in but see what happens to battery over night.

When I woke up this morning, the battery had hardly even fallen. It was about 42%. Normally it would have been almost dead.

So I charged it up again and took it to work. After moderate use and 3 or 4 calls for about 45 minutes, it was about 54% remaining around 4:00 this afternoon. Normally it's barely above 30% by the time I get home from work. Right now it's at 33% and that's just because my son was playing games on it while the other son was in swimming class tonight.

I'm very happy with the results. I tweaked several things that were causing wakelocks and put WiFi to sleep with screen off. The result are amazing. I have basically doubled the battery life from barely 12 hours to over 24.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
