Help high data usage - what is 'UID 10004'?

hi all,

Android Version: 2.2
Network: Orange
Taskiller Used?: No
Are You rooted & which Rom: No
Issue:

just got a replacement handset, and have finished setting it up exactly as my old one was configured (i think!)

thing is, it is now going through approximately twice as much data per day. already today it's going through 14MB which was a heavy day's usage on my previous handset

I've looked in the '*#*#4636#*#*' menu, 'battery history -> network usage' and one entry has used WAY more data than the others, labelled 'UID 10004'

It's used about four times as much data as the app with the next highest data usage, which is 'internet', followed by calender, facebook etc etc.

Does anyone know what app this is, or how I can find out?

thank you!

uid is not the app name its just the process in memory and the phone has assigned an id for it
you could probably use a process manager to find out what it is

okay, thanks... can you recommend one? quick search finds 'Android Assistant', so if not I suppose I'll give that a go...

I used to find out what unamed UID's were with Activity express. Just please do not use it's task killing functions. But you can click on individual running apps and it tells you their UID.

@danfrance

thanks - don't use it's task-killer properties for any particular reason, or just because task-killers are unnecessary on android?

running it just brings up a list of running applications - is this where it'll say 'UID 10004' underneath the relevant app if it happens to be running at the time?

Task killers are bad in general and completely superfluous anyway.

Unfortunately you have to click each app individually to see its particulars. In the list of the pop up window, UID is actually labelled "Process ID". Of course it may not be running which is inconvenient.

Hope this helps.

quick system info also does this but you dont know the uid untill you hold down on the process and click properties (there are alot of processes, this could take some time)

task killers are bad, they cause more issues then they relieve and add to battery reduction rather than help

it might have changed since you used it - or i'm using it wrong! - but it brings up a list of apps with 'Process underneath' - tapping one then brings the app up in full, long-pressing closes it.

entries appear as follow; eg
FACEBOOK
Process: com.facebook.katana (Background)
Memory: 16 MB

is that 'Process' entry where 'UID 10004' would be shown?

sorry for pernickety questions, i'm a bit of a luddite - all help much appreciated!

just installed this one, and yes, that'll do it, but then it crashed my desire! restarted, flashed up the HTC loading screen, then got stuck in a loop re-booting itself! just pulled the battery and am trying to restart it...

*waiting*

ummm... restarted it... brings up the HTC boot screen, then the orange logo... then re-boots! tried again and got as far as entering my unlock PIN, then re-boots! Ah... just got it working again!

Nope crashed again! Unistalling that app as soon as i can get in again!
