Help Holy Smokes! High Data Usage by Android OS! [SOLVED]

Unfortunately here in the UK I found T-Mobile unresponsive, saying their data measuring was accurate and that if my gmail appeared to use massive data for no reason then I must contact google or Samsung - yeh, good luck with talking to a human there, eh? T-Mob did give me 1gb free and a promise of a second if the issue continued, but later became abusive but I eventually got a nice tech dude who was baffled but did give me that 2nd gig. Thankfully, the issue suddenly stopped as swiftly as it had begun.

It seems to have stopped for me to. No idea what happened.

Hi i have noticed that my os is using a lot of data like you 1.2g 10 days the only thing i do is watch youtube youtube only has 20M and i know i been watching a lot of videos i think the pictures loading on youtube app is youtube app data usage and when streaming is the android os is only a theory
,My android os used 1.6gb in 1 day. Could it be caused by a virus?

I noticed something today that may be relevant. I watch videos on my phone while on lunch break at work, but my building gets terrible reception. Even if I have a couple of 4G LTE bars the videos will buffer constantly. So I discovered last year that if I switch my preferred network from "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" to just "GSM/WCDMA auto", which puts me on plain 4G instead of LTE, videos play flawlessly.

The past few weeks I've had this same Android OS data drain problem, so I downloaded a data usage monitor app. That's when I noticed that most of the data used by the OS (called "root" in the app) is at the same time I'm watching videos with the LTE turned off. For example, just today I watched an episode of tv on HBO GO, but the OS used even more data than the HBO app! Almost half a gig within an hour!

So could the network switching be the cause of it? If so, is there a fix that'll still allow me to watch videos at work?

Outwith my knowledge, but I can tell you I watched a 90minute show on BBC iPlayer app (the Sherlock xmas special) the other day and it used a large amount of data, nearly a gig. There's no way on a 4gb monthly deal that I can watch shows on my phone except as an occasional treat.

Hi, first time poster here. Early yesterday evening, I walked my dog. I took my phone, but didn't use it. I put it in my purse, went to dinner with my family, and checked my messages while dinner was coming. I had a text message from 30 minutes prior saying "you're about to reach your data cap of 3G, slow down" and then one more recent saying "you reached your cap, we're throttling you".

I went to my data usage to find that in the last FIVE DAYS, Android OS had used more than 2.5G of data. I work from home and am on my WIFI connection almost exclusively, and yet it said that I had used this data. I have NO IDEA what did it, and I'm not clear that anyone actually solved this (despite the fact that it's marked as solved). In a panic at dinner, thinking someone was hacking me, I factory reset my phone (possible huge overreaction!) and spent the night creating it from scratch (not backup).

I have disabled my Google data backup (I actually WANT to use it, but you can't restrict it to WIFI only, apparently) and am keeping an eye on things. I have two 1/2 weeks left in my cycle. This has never happened before. :(

I think the SOLVED header relates to a similar instance where the cause was found, and indeed some folks do find what's causing massive data use. But I have to say it looks like phone makers, service providers etcetera tend to assume it's always the consumers fault. I never got to the bottom of mine but happily it hasn't reoccurred. Good luck.

I've had the same data drainage problem from the android os, I've read through all the posts & links that I could possibly find. I've turned off auto sync from day one & after reading & learning that google data backup is a big data hog & turning that off my android os data drainage has slowed down drastically. It's still draining a little too much in my opinion but I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now.
Thank you all for the helpful tips and links.

OK, I have solved it for my device. It requires the use of a firewall, specifically Mobiwol No Root Firewall. I have gone from more than 3G data of background Android OS to practically nothing. I enjoy this app and the awareness it brings to me of what all is just quietly using data even when I haven't opened the app...it brings a very high level of control over every aspect of how you use data. It's not hard to learn, but it is robust. YAY for getting this issue under control!

hi.. I been using Mobiwol for a couple of years at least and its only been with the last android update that mobiwol has stopped working, ie in order to use the internet or wifi I have to turn the firewall off. is this just me idk as I've emailed mobiwol but they have yet to reply.

I've had to fiddle with the Mobiwol settings and allow various applications to run with background, including my browser and a few others. I enjoy Mobiwol because it allows me to see instantly what's trying to use the data, and I can see if it's something I want to allow or to continue blocking.

thanks. have you got any idea what you fiddled with as im allowing everything and it still doesn't want to allow things like Youtube.. but i am allowing even mobile connections.. and now rebooting

How about this....

Google os is surely messing around and I am not sure what I need to do.

Hey,
I made a regristration to explain you the reason I found out.
The Android OS App does not cause any kind of data usage. It is a provider reason.
Follow this example:

Youre surfing a litte bit in the internet and you use 15kb of data.
But your provider accounts you 100kb of data because of the tact. In many cases low priced providers do this.
So now the Android OS displays the difference of your own data usage and the data usage the provider invoices you.
The same procedure is with the phone minutes. E.G. youre calling someone for 10 seconds, you have to pay for 1 minute...

I noticed it because i'm from Germany and got Vodafone as a prrovider and never had any problems with it.
Now im in the US and bought a Tmobile Sim card, where i got the problem of high data usage in Android OS.

You cant stop this problem except you stop your mobile data or maybe changing to a better provider.
You can only make the problem smaller if you reduce your internet usage, but the Android OS wont stop taking data in every active session. The smaller your data usage the smaller is your android os background usage.

I found a German page that explains the problem in detail:
http://www.teltarif.de/mobilfunk/internet/taktung.html

But til now I havent found any information from tmobile that shows in which tact they account the data. Maybe some of you got something?

I hope you understood what i wanted to say.

Hey there, thank you for your time and your response.
You may be right in a way. But, I'll tell you what happened. I use a Lenovo k3 note, I noticed that the Internet provider I use was billing me high usage of data and I got suspicious. Then I wanted to check the data accuracy and I installed, "My Data Manager". That's how I found out that the OS services was using a ridiculous amount of data and took the screenshot. Later, I went to the lenovo service center and showed it to them. Took it up with the manager and this is what he has to say, "The marshmallow update has an issue and the update was directly from Google and not from lenovo, our marshmallow update is still under testing and will be released soon. I suggest we downgrade your phone back to lollipop and see how it works out for you." I agreed and got the downgrade done today and noticed a drastic drop in the data usage by the OS services.
I will check up on this for a couple of days. But yes, below is the screen shot of what was used today.

Ok, lets be honest, this problem is not SOLVED like title say.
Have same problem like many other describe above , it's just eat all my data plan for 10 days, first day of use on data is consume 700Mb and have turn on 2Gb package for 1 months.
Like other recommend I turn off my phone backup and is not that, something still eat my data.
Just install Mobiwol FW and notice that first thing what I see in connecting logs is Android System 1000 host: cache.google.com then second is Chrome 10072 Host: server1.itmedia.online that give me input to look at Chrome settings and notice that I turn on ALL chrome synchronization and for now I disable all.
So anybody can give me input what is Android System 1000 ?!

Under Firewall Rules it say that Android System is system app who work in background and use
com.android.settings
com.lge.systemservice
com.lge.hiddenmenu
1000

Yes, I am checking on it now. Since this is the first of the month (May). It'll enable me post accurate screenshot of the amount of data used by android os.
Below is the first screenshot of today and the OS has consumed even more than youtube.

I just found what was eating my Data. It was Google photos. I recorded a stray cat chewing on a chicken bone yesterday and Google photos synced it. The video was a big file, close to 1gb.
If anyone has this OS services eating up your data, make sure your synch is turned off in Google photos.
It can be turned of in app (Google photos) under settings > synch.
If you still have issues, it's all to do with synch. Turn off the one which you don't need it, like emails, etc., and just synch it when you want to get new mails.
Hope this helped.
Below is the screen shot of OS SERVICES using all my Data.
