Homo sapiens (Humans)

You only think about yourself and not the global picture? Same could be said for the Red Cross working in hostile areas in South America and Africa. Why would I bother helping them if I'm not affected at all? It's called being humaine and having compassion for others and not just yourself. From the post above though... it's hard to see that. Do you have any knowledge of global biodiversity? If you don't, then it's hard to have a worthwhile conversation. It'd be like trying to talk about metaphysics with someone who has no knowledge in that field.

because history has shown that hostile areas lead to larger conflicts like world wars.

preventing a treefrog from extinction has never prevented a war

Is this factual? or just based on faith? If it is based on faith, then I have faith that animals have souls. If it's based on fact, then it's definitely not scientific because it can't be proven with science.
 
Ok so based on all those posts I conclude that:
1: We have a troll on this thread
or
2: We have a stereotypical human on this thread.

@mcatdtdroid: if you aren't a troll, ill say this..if you've ever heard of the butterfly effect then you'd know how important one little thing is and how it can affect everything else. Sure saving treefrogs won't stop wars but what if that one day treefrogs had an antidote for an incurable disease in the future? Would that have changed your mind?

Of course it doesn't matter after the fact but that's some food for thought..

I can't believe that I completely forgot about the butterfly effect and chaos theory!

You made a really good post showing that one little animal can change the lives of humans. Another good example is penicillin. The discovery was from a small petri dish with bacteria. That one tiny thing saved the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Imagine now if that was a small tree frog. The discovery of penicillin was accidental. They knew about the bacteria but didn't know that it could produce penicillin.

Another way to think of it... the extinction of a major source of food in an ecosystem at the bottom level will cause a ripple and perhaps even disaster for species above and that rely on it.

you don't get it, I understand how biodiversity works, I understand the theory of the butterfly effect, but I don't care in less than 80 years, I will be gone... by the time the butterfly effect or biodiversity effect from an Asian horntoed ratslug going extinct gets to this area.... I'll be dead.

According to the butterfly effect.... I HAD to have the dodo bird go extinct or I wouldn't be here (and neither would any of yall).

the post above proves my point. No thought or concern outside his own needs. So you would not think twice about going out and killing off the majority of the endangered species just as long as they lived for another 150 years?(not they will live that long anyway). What about your other future ancestors? Don't you want to see the beauty of the world? Or is this just a limited time offer thing? I'm far from a peta activist or tree hugger...but I do realize how important and beautiful this world is and I hate it when people are so single minded.

Well maybe none US would be here but the human race would be and maybe we would have been better off if the do do bird survived. If you could only visit the parallel universe where it survived then you can see how much it affected the future.

Man.. all this fun.
My issue with humans is how some want to control others.
Then we have the ones that don't care unless it affects them.

I can see this world coming to an end in my lifetime, because one set of humans is going to get fed up with the other and start a war.
I can see it happening in the US alone... the religious right wants to keep the status quo and drive their escalades, and the left wants to level the playing field.

I live and work with a bunch of narcissists in the south.
These people here have NO desire to do anything as long as they maintain this illusion that they are 'god fairing' people by going to church on Sunday and opening their wallet to the first guy holding a plate.

This somehow entitles this subset of humans to exit the church and do whatever the frak they want afterwards, no matter who they hurt or how they hurt them.

Some of you probably do live in the 'bible belt' and know what I am talking about.
This set of humans think they are better than you, and if you don't believe their horse s--t then you are not worthy.
They usually tell you to 'go back where you came from' and other simple minded hyperbole they can come up with if you don't agree.
