Honor 5X AMA (ask me anything)

I've also been testing the 5X, but was a bit out of the office last week for all of this discussion. Still, I'd like to help out where I can. :)

I'm currently using a Nexus 4 as my daily phone. And a V10 as my work phone. I am thinking about upgrading my N4 to either a Nexus 5X or an Honor 5X. Do you think the N5X is worth the extra money?

The H5X hardware is very compelling for the price, but does fall a bit short on the software side of things. Like @Unforgiven said, the H5X features perhaps the best iteration of EMUI yet (and actually quite a bit less-broken than EMUI 4 on the new Mate 8), but it's still EMUI. Certainly usable, but it may still frustrate you (as it does me).

So between the H5X and the N5X, I really think it comes down to your preference and budget. Coming from a Nexus, the N5X would be a logical upgrade. Solid hardware, plus a guaranteed software experience that you're already familiar with. The H5X is quite a bit cheaper, and the hardware is still quite capable, but EMUI may be a bit hard for a Nexus familiar to live with.

Just one quick question: Does the phone come with the Google Play Store? I would need some of my fav apps from there!

Thanks for all your help........Great stuff indeed!

What are the specs of this phone?
Does it support Band 12?
Removable battery?
SD slot?
Unlocked Price?
Rooting?

That's relative. I've been using it as a daily driver for a few weeks and like it a lot. Even plays the newest games like the Room III very well.

That EMUI is something I'm curious about.
As phones go,hardware is at a decent spot for most mfgs, even in the lower-priced segment,so,new software features exclusive to a brand are of interest to me,even if it's just to try out for a few weeks/months.

The one item that has me concerned is installing a 3rd party launcher:

From both the OPPO Find7 & N1,I found that installing a 3rd party launcher on top of their COLOR O/S FUBAR'ed access to some of the phones settings, actually made them disappear w/no way to access unless you switched back to the stock COLOR O/S UI.

Have either of y'all experienced anything like this?

Battery is not removable, but I can usually make two days without changing my normal usage patterns or doing anything specific.
SD support up to 128 GB, useable whether you are using a Micro Sim or Nano Sim.
$199 unlocked.
I'm very optimistic that unlocked bootloader, custom recover, root, and AOSP Roms will be a thing.;)

Third party launchers haven't been a problem for me except for occasionally running into trouble setting them as default. EMUI for some reason hides some settings on its own, some exposed by third party launchers, some only found using apps from play.:(

I would normally be royally turned off by the NRB factor, but at $200 unlocked, that is well within the tolerance budget I would have for such a phone. I also see it lists Band 12 for LTE, which means it should be happy on T-Mobile. :)

I suppose I will simply just have to wait until we see how rootable it truly is.

Sounds workable to me.
Any chance you could side-load Blinkfeed/Sense,just to see if it will work? (No Root required)

Definitely interested in the bootloader unlock/root/etc.... a hybrid EMUI/AOSP ROM perhaps.................

It will be rootable. I've had the privilege of being part of the testing team shaking out the worst of the bugs before release, so I was precluded from attempting to root. The boot loader will be unlockable at least by requesting a code, which means custom recoveries, root, etc., etc. I can't comment on whether or not there were any rom developers testing as well.;)

As far as NRB, trust me, this thing sips battery and comes rocking a nice 3000mA battery. 24 hours is a breeze in most scenarios. During testing I went through 2 otas with the associated "optimizing apps" step followed by a factory data reset and resetup and reinstallation of all my apps and was at 90% still following all that.

I have never - repeat - never had a phone with an NRB that lasted even three hours as soon as I started using it heavily. The most recent were a Moto G and an Xperia T2 Ultra. The G would get hot and burn up battery faster, and had abysmally slow charging. The Xperia would get so power hungry, it would flat out refuse to charge if I plug it in while letting it stream.

I don't believe for a second that any NRB phone would last me more than that per charge cycle.

I can't speak to all usage scenarios. Using a task killer will lay waste to the best of batteries. Ditto heavy gaming. I'm played The Room Three quite a bit over the last few days without unexpected battery drain. If that is really such a concern, I'd pick up an Anker 10050 portable charger, it's also small enough to fit in a pocket and will give you roughly three full recharges away from an outlet.

It's not just the fact of it not lasting long. But the frequent charge cycles - by the nature and science of how batteries work - will wear it out faster. It's part of why I have been having such a hard time shopping for an upgrade from my Exynos Note3.

From what I read on the forums, it appears that the Honor 5 does not like 3rd party launchers. The launcher I prefer is Nova Prime. Has anyone tried this out? Will it work?

It gets along fine with 3rd party launchers. Even the guy that runs the tests for Huawei uses Google Now Launcher. The quirk is that you have to set it as the default launcher in different way, but once done, you are all set.

I use the Google Now Launcher without any problems - you just have to dig down in settings to set it as the default: Settings > Manage apps > Default app settings > Launcher.

You do also have to remember to do that any time an installed launcher app gets updated, as that resets the default preference.

It's like going back to Gingerbread only easier - you set default apps from the app manager with a dedicated menu for that.

Not quite modern Android but certainly not a BlackBerry lol.
I wouldn't mind a trip in the WayBack Machine, sounds fun.................. :thumbsupdroid:

Pix or it's not true, sleep is great, note wifi only.
