Honor 5X AMA (ask me anything)

How's the screen outside in direct sunlight? Looking for new phones for both my daughter and my wife and trying to decide between this and the Blu Vivo 5. Thanks!
It doesn't completely suck and I think it's not bad for the price but you can get under the hood as a user and improve it (root NOT required).

Check out "QuickShortcutMaker"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut

Use that to find the hidden setting for content adaptive backlight - and turn it off.

Then turn off auto brightness and control it from the notification pull down.

With those settings I think you'll find the colors muted in bright sunlight (as opposed to gone) but the contrast good enough to get the basics alright for most viewing angles.

PS - I live at over a mile elevation in the desert so I'm very picky about screen brightness.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of info I was needing. By recommending QuickShortcutMaker you provided an answer to a question I didn't even know I had! You psychic or something? ;)

BTW, could anyone tell me how the gold color looks? It's hard to tell in the pictures sometimes. Are we talking a semi-shine finish, matte, or what?

Yes. Yes I am. :D :D

I think it looks pretty good. The front is flat, not shiny, and the back is all brushed in one direction (left-right when viewing in landscape) so it has a rich look, not bad at all.

And compared to my gold HTC M8, this is much less gold, more like champagne, or close to Canada Dry ginger ale just a little darker.

Thanks again. Considering the gold for my daughter and needed to know. Think I've more or less made up my mind and will be getting the 5X.

One more display adjustment you'll probably really enjoy - color temperature. Out of the box the colors are pretty cool but you can wind that down so whites are white, not slightly blue. I love that feature.

Watermark:

is it possible to put an own watermark into the kamerasystem ?

The camera app includes a Watermark functionality that lets you overlay the date/time, location, weather, or a few other pre-defined stamps onto photos you take, but I don't believe there's a way to define your own custom watermark.

Does this phone work with Metro pcs? I want to purchase this phone on amazon but unsure if it works with Metro pcs. I seen other posts stating that it does work for Net10 so i might go with them if i can't ativate with Metro.

For some reason, even though my Honor 5X is paired with my Kia Sorrento, the Bluetooth works fine in making and answering calls while driving, and then it suddenly doesn't work, The problem doesn't seem to be with the car, but with the phone. I've unpaired and repaired, shut off Bluetooth and turned it back on with no resolution. Any ideas? Thanks

I use mine with my Ram with no problems. Only hiccup I has was with the latest Huawei Watch OTA that enabled phone calls on the watch. I had to disable phone audio on the watch and all was good after that. Is there possibly something else in the car that is pairing Bluetooth?

Metro is owned by by T-Mobile so it should except for band 12 and that's supposed to be coming.

Is there a way to schedule the wifi to turn on and off, say at 8am 5pm when I walk in/out of my building at work? If not can you recommed an excellant app for that.

There's no native ability to do what you describe, but there are a number of popular automation apps that could help:
Tasker (paid, hugely powerful, probably overkill for this)
Automate (free, easier to use)
Trigger (limited functions for free)

There are many others, I'm sure, but I'd suggest trying out Automate to start.

Thank you will try out your app recommendations. If I may ask you another question. Is there a way to turn down the notification sound. There is volume control for ringtone, media, alarm, and music but not notification that I could find.

I think the notification volume is slaved to the Ringtone volume, but I'm not 100% sure. I generally keep my phone on silent and depend on my Huatch to alert me.

Question: My old Samsung Galaxy has a native SIP that I used for internet calling. Is this available on the Honor 5X as a native app? It’s not a deal breaker, I can always use a SIP app.
Thanks.

I installed the blinkfeed launcher and want to change the color of the background which requires a menu button. The launcher does not have the three buttons (menu) integrated in the app. The honor 5x recent apps button does not switch to menu options if held. Is there a work around or a way to reconfigure this?

I'm not sure... :(

Um, don't really know what to say. The menu icon in the status bar has been gone for a couple years now. If the app hasn't updated to conform, I'm not sure what workaround there would be.

No, it doesn't include a native SIP capability - at least not as far as I can find. I know on my various Nexuses, that's been a component of the Dialer/Phone app. Doesn't seem to be present on the H5X.

Hangouts now has the ability to handle VoIP calls though, so that *could* be an option - or you could stick with a third-party SIP client.

Hello! Just bought my Honor 5x the other day and just wondering why does it hang so soon? I can't even open my most favorite app Azar.

Have you protected the app? I recommend protecting all apps, as well as setting power management to normal (or standard).

How does this phone compare with the Zenfone 2 Laser? I'm considering the Zenfone for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, but I've heard that Zenfones have various issues. Is the software on the Honor 5X more reliable and stable?

I've been using it daily for nearly 4 months with out any catastrophic failures. That includes testing to provide feedback and loading test builds of the software. It has its issues here and there, but I haven't had to pull my sim becuase I couldn't do something or run a certain app properly.

I can't speak for the Zenfone.

Coming from a Moto G and Blu Life One X (both of which run stock Android), how is the UI on the Honor 5X? I know it's basically a clone of iOS, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing right? (many people love iPhones)

Is Huawei committed to the US market? I'm unsure of them because they're a Chinese brand with very little recognition in the States, and Chinese companies get a bad rap for shoddy quality control.
