Help Horrible Lag when 4G is ON

We have pre-release 4G in the suburb of San Francisco I'm working in lately, and had horrible lag with 4G when I tried it. What seemed to cure it for me was something I'd read in one of the forums- do a (Menu->Settings->System Updates->) "Update Profile" while in the area you're using 4G in; I'm guessing (wildly, and outta my ass) that the reason the CPU is spinning in 4G is 'cause it's constantly trying to ping an IP address for a gateway that's not in your WiMax service area.

In any case, that seemed to fix it for me- I was able to use 4G successfully and w/o lag in the SF Peninsula and Vegas in the last week.

How long should the Update Profile take?

Anyone else having this issue? Or know what can be done?

I have it like crazy...I stopped using 4G due to it. So did my wife. Terrible lag.

As a few others have said, do not use the 4G toggle widget that HTC includes on the phone. I used to experience the lag yall are describing, but then I started turning it on through settings and it has never happened since. Turning off 4G with the widget does not seem to cause any problems, just when you use it to turn it on.

Hmmm, i'll have to give this a shot cause I use the widget.

Ditto, for me it happens when I turn on 4G through widget or settings menu, doesnt matter, the cpu cranks to 100% for around 5 mins then settles down, NYC here, 4G is disappointing so far, when it works its awesome, pretty much a wifi connection everywhere.

EDIT: cpu hits 100% randomly when 4G is on, useless right now, ugh.

Happened today turning on using the settings option. I turned off and don't plan on using again until this is resolved.

I had the same problem with lag. Had to reboot to resolve.
I was turning on with the widget.
I removed the widget and turned it on through the menu.
Seems like no lag now. Maybe because I waited in the menu screen while it was turning on 4G? With the widget I would not really wait. Just turn on and then hit home button.

I turn on 4G at work because I get signal there but I turn it off at home as there is no signal there.

If you don't reboot your phone after you use 4g, the wimax radio will continue to search for it. Even if you turn it off manually, even if you don't have a widget or a toggle on your home screen. Dowload alogcat app from the market and check it out. You will see it constantly loop between search and error. That does not stop unless you reboot the phone.

When I turned off 4G yesterday through the menu it didn't re-enable 3G.
I couldn't figure out how to enable it (tried airplane mode on then off) so I had to reboot.
So what you have to turn it on through the menu but off through the widget?

Thanks for this tip. I've been having the same problem and was getting to the point of giving up on 4g. I've only tried this yesterday, but so far, I haven't had the lag since I updated my profile as you suggested.

I've experienced this too. Using the stock HTC 4g on/off widget seemed to be the main source of the problem. Using the settings menu seems to avoid the issue.

But I've also noticed that the majority of web pages don't load all the way when using 4g rather than a 3g connection. It's amazingly inconsistent. But using 4g a page will load to a certain point, then hang indefinitely. Loading the same pages on 3g ends up being significantly faster (if only because they actually load).

Any one else experience this? I'm in NYC where 4g was just officially unveiled. Is the 4g network that bad here? (This happens even when I have 2+ bars of 4g.) Or is something else going on?

Don't mean to hijack the thread...

I'm nearby in Newark, NJ and experience this same issue quite often. I have several browsers on my phone and Opera mobile seems to be best at actually getting the pages to finish loading.

Lag here too, with aLogCat confirming the attempts to connect to WiMax servers even after 4G is switched off. I've tried the profile update, but that doesn't seem to help.

In pre-release 4G coverage in the Bay Area.

Me too. Starting 4G with the widget or through setting creates a lag in every program and it doesn't go away if I shut off 4G. It only goes away if I restart the phone.

Add me and my Evo to the "yeah, it lags" list. If its not lagging its trying like heck to hold into the 4g signal whether I'm moving the phone around or its sitting on the counter - coincidentally, we've tested this phone next to another Evo (same specs) and the other one has zero problems with keeping the 4g connection while sitting right next to it. Thought my phone was just a POS, guess I'm not alone. Yay?

I am going to call Sprint about this problem. I don't know why I've waited this long to do it.

I'll update on what they say...for the past 3 weeks, I've been living with 3G...which makes me think...I could get the Boost Mobile Android phone, or the Cricket Androind phone and enjoy unlimited everything for $50/ mo instead of what Sprint charges.

4G was one of the main reasons I went with Sprint in the first place...and I have not been able to use 4G successfully since day-one. I mean, I can use it for a period of time, but it always eventually leads to the lag problem which leads to a reboot.

Boost? Doesn't that operate on the Nextel network? If you want to do anything on the internet, I'd advise against that. Of all the cellular carriers, Nextels internet access is by far, the slowest. I mean, real slow. Slug slow. Watching paint dry, slow. So slow, that 3G will look like fiber, slow.

Interesting, I was not aware of this. I just knew that it was Sprint, but did not distinguish it as the Nextel (iDEN) side of Sprint. I thought it was CDMA Sprint.

I did a little google as I am typing this, and it seems that Boost uses both CDMA and iDEN. I'm not sure how to tell which of these I'd be using most of the time.

I know that Nextel has a few hybrid phones that uses iDEN for PTT and Sprint's CDMA for cellular and if the one you get is one of those you may be fine. But if it's using iDEN for cellular/data you will be very disappointed.

Where I work I've been in charge of 65 Nextel handsets, for about 10 years. I've had data on my handset(s) a couple of times in the past and it's not worth the money, whatever the rate is. Even on a PTT Blackberry it was miserable, especially with the premium BB fee.

Just make sure you check into it before you switch.

Does HTC/ Sprint know about this, it seems like they know but aren't doing anything.

I used to take this approach, but have decided to actually get active. Don't waste time in this forum looking for answers. CALL SPRINT and create a ticket. This is the only way we'll get resolution.

I did this just yesterday, and the first step should be a factory reset of your data profile (not a factory reset of the phone). That's what they did for me as step one, then the lady told me that the ticket would be tagged as unresolved as I told her this lag issue usually takes more than a day to manifest after a reboot.

They will have you power down and remove battery for 2 minutes. Then once back on, you dial ##3282# and then enter edit mode. Edit mode requires your MSL password. I would write this down as the agent gives it to you. It's nice to have if you don't already have it.

Then you go to Data Profile / Menu / Restore. DON'T DO THIS unless you are told to by Sprint, or you know what you are doing. I say that because I don't know if there was something she did on her end prior to me restoring the data profile. She may have to initiate a specific update to get pushed through. After doing the restore, I think the phone reboots and automatically "handshakes" with Sprint to register. After several minutes of this and that, your phone is done with STEP 1 for all 4G issues.

This is how it works. They will do this set of steps, as the stage in troubleshooting 4G problems. Well, I'm done with this step, but iti didn't work. This morning, I got the lag spike.
