Help Hot spot/tethering

Interested in reviews of using the hot spot/tethering on the 3D with 3G. My Evo 4G experience has been random speed wise with mostly being slow unless connected via 4G. Connecting via USB for access is usually much quicker than using the hot spot.

EasyTether works very well. I have Windows 7. Tried hotspot and you receive a message that says you aren't signed up for it.

EDIT: I typed the response about the hotspot under the presumption that it was being asked whether or not you could use it without activation, not a review of how well it works if one has it activated (paying the $29.99/mo).

I pushed it to see if it would say anything about 29.99 and didnt. I know the Nexus S was free. Anyone know definitively if its free or not?

I was under the impression that you had to root droid devices to get that. It would be very nice if it came out of the box working free though.

OK, it eventually said i wasnt able to. However when I had the Nexus S, I was. It's kind of shady that with one its free and the other it isnt, especially since at the store they are advertised identically saying that phone has hotspot (with nothing about an additional cost)

Sprint doesn't offer the hotspot feature on any phone for free. You may have just been lucky with the Nexus.

Asking about the paid hotspot/tethering via builtin. My experience with 3G/hotspot on the Evo 4G hasn't been good even with the tweaks (proxy settings changes). I really like my Evo 4G except for this (really the only issue and it's a biggie). With the trade in money making the 3D a minimal cost upgrade I might do it if the hotspot works. If I could get rid of my Windows environment and only need to deal win linux/unix boxes (command line) it wouldn't matter. Blasted GUI RDP crap takes up WAY too much bandwidth.....

I think Easy Tether is easier for the average to set up, although PDAnet does work good also, simple preference, barnacle is also good

For free tethering to ONE device, download PDANet. Perhaps the best app out there. =)

It has been talked about in the Nexus S forum, as well as confirmed by friends of mine who have that phone. Everyone is currently getting free hotspot with Sprint on that phone.

Maybe Google is paying for it ??

It is possible Google is paying for it. I just think its misrepresentation for them to market the feature the same in store, when one has it free and the other doesn't.

I agree but maybe Google offers there services and then in return Sprint offers something of there's, they don't always tell us what happens behind the scenes, maybe someone from Sprint will chime in here, would be nice

I beleive it is free on the Nexus because that is the one phone that is fully 100% Google Stock.

There fore there is not software from sprint etc stopping it from working.

Just my 2 cents.

to my knowledge, you dont even need wifi tether on the ns4g. its part of gingerbread. The way I understand it is it is a part of gingerbread...then sprint goes in and puts all their rubbish in (nascar, nfl, gps, etc) and has the ability to block the hotspot feature. Since the ns4g has no sprint software, the hotspot feature has not been turned off on it by them.

Could be wrong, this is just the way i understand it

IMO, root will solve that option when exploited

Yeah you dont need anything, in settings you just go to wifi/network and its just really easy to start up. Like turning on 4g.

That's the point I'm making. Why block the feature if the block can be easily circumvented. Still I'm sure sprint will figure out a way.

I'm sure one of the features listed in the stores for both phones is accessing the internet and GPS. You have to pay for those features as well by selecting a data plan and paying for that plan. I see your point, but no where does it say the feature is free so I think you're nitpicking.

my understanding was always that sprint doesnt allow teathering because then they loose money on there little usb internet gadgets that cost you to use. understandable, but if this is the case then why does the evo 3d come with sprint hotspot for 8 devices? isnt this the same thing as teather?

Last I heard - a while ago - they gave the first 30 days for free - and I'm pretty sure they send a text message about it when you use it - again, I got one once.

No guarantees they didn't change their policy, but it didn't used to be a trap.

When I connect my EVO 3D to my PC and select connection type "USB tethering", I get a window saying it's searching for HTC Sync on my PC. When it doesn't find it, it says I can mount the SD card and install it from that or I can download it from the HTC - Mobile Phones, Smartphones, Cell Phones, PDAs web site. But I can't find the installation file on the SD card and HTC EVO 3D isn't one of the selectable product types on the web site. So where can I get HTC Sync???

I'm not sure. The quote you quoted me on was referencing the Nexus S.

What I was trying to say is it looks like Gingerbread USB tethering is enabled on the EVO 3D but apparently it's not as simple to set up as on the Nexus S. It seems to require HTC Sync be installed on the PC. But I don't know where to get a version of it that works for the EVO 3D. I'm hoping someone out there knows more about this. Has anyone tried it? Does it work? If so, where can we get it?

Thanks!
