How big is too big for a phone???

You say it would be too big to hold with one hand?

Problem solved.
LOL!!! I was about to say that when you have to carry your tablet in the fashion of a '70s vintage boom-box (on your shoulder, with a handle), then it's too big to use as a phone. Looks like you beat me to it. ;)

Why the answer I'm thinking of directly numerically correlate with men's.... no, no, no it couldn't be it.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but anyways...

When a 4" iPhone user starts trashing Android phones, I'll just whip out my 8" of rock hard Android and slap it onto their forehead.

You know all the womens will be shocked at your 8" phone and will be asking to touch it and how you live with something that big.

You know there's a "size doesn't matter" joke in there somewhere.
:o

Size is part of the reason I don't even own a smartphone. I like the Android OS for how versatile it is, especially on tablets/netbooks and game systems, but I prefer smaller and simpler flip phones for talking and texting. The 5-inch "phablets" look nice, but they're not the kind of thing I would want to carry with me everywhere, so the phone support just feels redundant to me. I feel the same way about this.

Now, if they made a new Galaxy Pocket on the other hand...

The Huawei Ascend Mate is a monster of a thing too, 6.1 inch screen..

"Too big" has to do with thickness more than screen size, for me. That's why the Droid 3 was in my hands only for a few weeks and no slide-out keyboard will ever be mine again.

I need thin and HUGE bright fast screen... yeppers. :smokingsomb: :D

I think the Samsung Galaxy Note 1 & 2 is as far as i would go with a screen size. A 5"x 5" inches screen is the highest in my opinion.

Anything bigger is just ridiculous. Lol :D

Well, in my opinion Galaxy Note 8 itself is too big for a phone...undoubtedly it's a superb tablet, but why does it have to have a phone? If we see logically then anything that's larger than our palm is 'big' for a phone...from that perspective even Note II was big to be a phone..I personally don't like using a phone that will cover my entire face from one side when I put it closer to my ear...so I am happy with my S3 and didn't go for Note II..

Now with galaxy note 8 Samsung has crossed all the boundaries...I think one day they will start embedding a phone in anything that we can hold in one hand...even in the full sized 10-inch tablets..LOL

One thing is clear: even though we call them cell phones, the phone feature is becoming a smaller fraction of what we use these devices for. It once made sense to shrink a phone if all it could do was make calls and store contacts. The features that make the device smart are more pleasant to use on a bigger screen, so naturally, our phones are increasing in size.

The trend toward larger screens is consumer-driven. Once a device becomes too big, it will be clear to the manufacturer that they've crossed the preference threshold, and we might see size stabilize. Maybe we're almost there; maybe not.

People have been trying to call the "perfect size" for quite some time. It used to be in the 4" range. Clearly it isn't. Just wait and see. And don't worry. With the exception of Apple, manufacturers realize that one size does not fit all. We won't all have to use Note-sized phones if we think that's too big (or small!).

The evolution of phones is strange. I remember when the worry was that they were getting so small that when we tried to talk on them, they'd be dropped and lost in our ears. Phones like this were the fashion:

Now we're going the opposite way and smartphones are getting as big as tablets :p

Personally I don't think this is all bad. A 5 inch screen? I like that. The S3 is a nice size and I think the S4 will be too.

But, IMHO, the Note 2 is already taking it too far, and these reports of 6 and 8 inch phones just leave me scratching my head. Surely it's just a PR stunt? I mean no one will actually use those as phones, that's just ridiculous.

I agree that we'll eventually settle in a 5 inch average size.

i have seen korean shows.. that had the actors using small tablets.. and then using them to call people...and of course video chatting too.

so.. they are trying to make this a normal thing.

The larger phablets would be intended for use with a Bluetooth headset, not held up to your head. Portability would be my concern, I need my phone on me at all times, much bigger than the Note and that is no longer possible.

If the carriers would allow more than one device connected to a line it would be an option I might look at, a smaller phone for carrying around and the phablet for more stationary use, it could be a big plus for working.

I like the SGS3 size, since it's about the same as my Razr Maxx, but all screen. Give me a SGS3/Maxx, and an otterbox commuter case that isn't slippery, or too rubbery to slide easily out of my pocket (like a thick version of the silicone cases), and I'll be happy.

Call me old hat but I cannot consider anything larger than a 3.5" screen good for a phone. I like devices to virtually vanish in my pocket and I have a tablet for anything needing a larger screen. When phones become 'phablets' they start reminding me of the Motorola MicroTAC 'bricks' of the early 1990s.

Why not tether your Android phone to a tablet to perform the same function without sacrificing the use of a phone as a phone? When I saw those pics of that Samsung monstrosity I was reminded of an early 80's relic

What's next? Return of Rubber antennas?

That is what I do now. If I carried my Nexus 7 around with me any more than I do, I would probably just switch to the 3g version, drop my phone altogether, and use a bluetooth jawbone.

It would be nice if I could use a cheap dumb phone as a hot spot. That would work too.

Well, the $45 ZTE Merit (cost at launch) does the hotspot job just fine. I just leave it in the car and use my tablet within a few hundred feet of my vehicle. During winter when my subscriber module of the WISP I use dies for a time in freezing weather (it fails to register and sync in temps below 29 degrees) that is what I use for my iPad to connect to the Internet. I just got an iPhone so the Merit's only duty now is mobile hotspot
