Turns out my company slipped in an update to all our computers that does not allow us to save files to a USB device.

Nice work around, can't believe I didn't think to try this before. This also makes me think it's an easy fix for the Gmail app.
Yea I removed the gmail app widget, and replaced it with a bookmark link to gmail. Icon looks cool and I still get notified of new mail as normal. It's stupid that we have to, but it works.
This is not a fully functioning device if I can't open an attachement that is a .doc or if I can't save and attach a .pdf to an email.
So, you're saying that opening a proprietary document format that is not made for your OS in the first place defines the completeness of a device?
Bah. If the OS were JAVA based we'd have some sort of a watered down version of Open Office and all would be well. But, since Android is NOT JAVA,....
