Help How do I get SMS notifications while I'm on a call?

I can't say about 2.1 (you're not running 2.2?), but on 2.2 the notification appears during a call, and vibration will occur (if configured), but there will no audible notification during a call.

Are you getting different results?
 
The Ally doesn't have 2.2 yet. The notification appears, but I'm talking so I don't see it. I'm looking for an audible tone, like BlackBerry.
 
I don't know about the stock messaging app, but in Handcent, you can set it to either vibrate or play a tone or both while in a call.
