Root How do I restore a Nandroid backup?

notaguru

Android Enthusiast
Vlingo eliminated my Bluetooth capability (as reported on other forums - I just failed to do the homework), and the damage is so deep that simply uninstalling Vlingo did not solve the problem.

Evidently I need to revert to a pre-Vlingo condition, which - fortunately - I have, via nandroid. But I don't know how.

Not a problem, notaguru ;).

First, make sure you have good (100% is preferred) charge on your phone and/or keep it plugged-in / charging while you are doing this.

Just:

1. Boot into custom recovery
2. Select Backup/Restore
3. Select Nand restore
4. Select the Nandroid backup you wish to restore
5. Click trackball to confirm restore
6. Return the the main menu (a couple of volume-down clicks should do it)
7. Select Reboot system now

No need to do any wipes (although they won't hurt; there has been a little discussion recently regarding issues if you are coming/going to a ROM that uses/used cache2cache--your choice).

Enjoy!

Well, when you created the Nandroid backup, you selected the "Backup/Restore" sub-menu, as in:

Main_sel_BackupRestore.jpg

Right there in the same sub-menu where you found "Nand backup" is "Nand restore" (two menu items down.)

BackRestory_Menu.jpg

Select "Nand restore" and it will list (usually only one) folder names that is the serial number of your phone - select that and then the phone will lists the available Nandroid backup sets

Usually these (Nandroid backup folders) are named something like

BDS-YYYYMMDD-HHMM

Unless you renamed them.

Select the one you want.

Boot into recovery like you would if you were flashing a new ROM or making a nand backup, go to backup/restore, and choose nand restore.

Edit: Haha, look how helpful we all are.

WOW!!! I was sorta kinda hoping someone would say "You don't need to flush the toilet. Here's how to fix Vlingo."

But this is triple fine. THANKS!

I followed the instructions and loaded the week-old nandroid save. I did not do any 'wipes' but indeed was facing east, chanting properly.

The phone booted, but the UI was strange. I use KaosFroyo v37, but ADW is somehow broken. Lots of functionality is missing. Bluetooth and WiFi do not work. I fixed some of the UI but it's wrong wrong wrong.

Perhaps it's time to install a new ROM and go from scratch.

Yeah, there's been some chatter (threads) over at XDA regarding this too. I won't repeat all of the stuff, but here's the links:

[Q] Problems with NAND Restore KaosFroyo v39 - xda-developers

xda-developers - View Single Post - [Recovery] [17-Mar-2010] RA-eris-v1.6.2 (starting post...you'll want to read down from post #118)

Excellent information - thanks. That "one screen to right" and the ADW info pretty much describes my observed problem.

I didn't know that KaosFroyo v39 was available. I'd like to find it, then start from scratch. It'll take some time to get everything just right.

What should I "wipe" - and how?

Well, the wipes are menu options in custom recovery. Take a peek at erisuser1's thread's post #4 for details and images (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824), but the gist of doing wipes:

1. From custom recovery

2. Select Wipe from the main (first menu)

3. Select Wipe data/factory reset (you'll probably be prompted to confirm)

4. Select Wipe Dalvik-cache (again, you'll probably be prompted); also, this might be the step that needs to be done w/regard to the issues you are seeing...no guarantees, though, but this wipe certainly will not hurt--it will just force your ROM to rebuild the Dalvik cache upon next reboot (which might be what will help with your issue)

Cheers!

THANKS for the help! It's daunting for a newbie, but trivial looking back.

lol...I know how you feel...been there, done that. :)

Now, I expect to see you answering questions like this for others in the not-too-distant future, right? ;) :) (i.e., "see one, do one, teach one" :D).

Cheers and have a great day!
