Root How do I ROOT. Step by Step

Hey guys need help. There is way too many confusing ways to root. I had an iphone and tried to jailbreak it for 2 years. Never could and had to pay someone $50. Hoping this wont be the case here. I have built 30+ computers and can't figure this stuff out lol...
So far I have:
Downloaded samsung usb drivers and installed on my pc
Allowed unauthorized apps and debug on my skyrocket

at this point I have downloaded and attempted at least 4 different "1 click root programs". They all produce errors at some point. I even used the guides on this forum which (no offense) suck horribly. This is the same problem I ran into with the iphone. There is so many ways to do something supposedly easy, yet for someone who has worked with computers for 20 years it is difficult. So I suppose you could try to help me or take offense that I can't make sense out of any of your "guides" and flame me. Thanks if you help
 
update: It says the Samsung mobile drivers are installed yet it stills shows as removable disk in My Computer. Supposedly, it's supposed to show the phone. I think this is where the problem lies. SO how do you make the current official drivers work after they're installed?
 
I'm not much help, but what I did was follow a youtube video. I just searched how to root skyrocket and just followed the video. I only had 2.3.5 so it was super simple. Much easier than jailbreaking an iphone really.
 
The phone is supposed to show up as a removable drive. You don't need to install the Kies software. The one-click methods only work under certain sets of circumstances. You may want to consider an alternative. I haven't read any of the guides here so I can't comment on them specifically. I will say, in other places, they are generally written by people who have had experience doing this with a lot of phones and assume people know more than they do. They often speak in acronyms that outsiders aren't familiar with. And they are frequently written with little regard for the English language, and contain many inaccuracies.

One of my recent favorites on another site was: rename "su_ex1.2.sam3.zip" to "superuser.zip" (don't type ".zip")

This isn't professional grade work. In many cases I believe they are generally written in a manner to purposely confuse the newcomer so that some sense of superiority can be maintained. People love to slap the newbie around and spout "read the guide." Makes them feel good. I've never done it with this phone and can't help you. There are few people here I would ask for help. But there are some. Be careful.

Eventually someone will come along and spout the familiar "rooting isn't for everyone" line. I mean... if ya can't read instructions 'n' stuff. It would be for everyone if some professionalism went into the work. Obviously, from that tone, you can take it that things have been setup to be somewhat exclusive.

On the other hand, few people are going to step forward and hold your hand "step-by-step" through the process because no one wants to be responsible for the $600 paperweight you could very easily end up with if they personally give you the wrong instructions or you misinterpret them.

There are hundreds of "disclaimers" posted in places like this. They should be read carefully. They're written better than the instructions.

After writing this reply, I found the "zero-tolerance" policy elsewhere on THIS board. I have to say I commend this type of policy and point out that much of what might be taken as cynicism in this post was specifically aimed at experiences I have had on other, similar sites.

I actually used that method to root b/c I was already updated to 2.3.6, unfortunately.

I don't think that they are purposely written poorly....I think they are written by people who are younger and don't know how to write clearly. Other times they are trying to write it for the lowest common denominator.

The example you gave above meant that they want you to call it "superuser.zip", but some people are so computer illiterate that they didn't want those people to make the file "superuser.zip.zip". Thats why they said "don't type the zip."

Occasionally, the instructions skip HOW to do a step (like putting the phone into download or recovery mode, but the instructions say "Now put it into recovery mode").


The bottom line is, if you want to root your phone, make sure you have all the drivers installed. Installing the Samsung Kies software is the easiest way to do this (Kies for PC)

If it is still in Android version 2.3.5, you can use the "One-Click Methods," such as here.

If yours had updated to 2.3.6, you'll have to use this version. That is what I had to do, so if you have questions, let me know, and I'll see if I can help too (disclaimer: I'm new to Android too, so my knowledge is pretty limited, however! But I did manage to get root on my Skyrocket without breaking it...). As I mentioned it doesn't quite explain how to put the phone into each mode, but this should do that. Good luck!

Okay so my Noobness is the cause here. I understand what it's like to be 1337 in a tech forum but oddly most of my pc knowledge doesn't quite transfer over to mobile phone software. I blame the fact I am relatively inexperienced with open source. Anyhow, had to use the pull down menu I didn't know existed (insert LOL here) to enable usb connection with pc. After that, it all worked just how the guide said. One simple step can wreck a noob's day. Anyhow thanks for trying to help me during my rant as I nerd rage occasionally. All rooted up and the phone with Titanium Pro installed is nothing short of the holy grail compared to my iphone. Couldn't be happier..

Glad ya got 'er done, but you didn't need the pull down you didn't know existed. Same options are available in the settings app. Actually, I'm not sure what you could have needed in that menu. Can you educate me, please?
 
When you connect your phone via usb cable. The "removable drives" it displays in your My Computer are not accessible until you use the pull down on the Skyrocket and click "usb connected- click to move files". Maybe there is another way but this way worked for me.

Your method may be quicker. I found the option in Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB Utilities > USB mass storage. I don't find it the pull down notification menu at all but I thought I did the first time you mentioned it. Odd.
