Root How do I update my rooted EVO!

My EVO was rooted when I bought it. I'd like to update it to the new Android that was recently released. How do I do this?

my suggestion is to read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide. it has ton of info that you need to know now that you are rooted. my only suggestion is to disregard the use of rom manager. it tends to be very buggy.

now as far as updating your phone, it is very simple enough. all you would have to do is flash a gingerbread rom. my suggestion is to try mikg2.42. it is gingerbread and it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 combined. here is the download: theMikMik.com • View forum - v2.xx.

1.so download the file and transfer the file to the sd card.
2.power off then press and hold power+vol down
3.select recovery
4.make a nandroid backup by selecting "backup and restore" and select backup
5.wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select "install .zip sdcard"
7.select reboot

now the first reboot will take awhile as it has to build dalvik cache up so be patient. it can take anywhere from 5-30min typically (depending on the rom).

Thanks....I did everything you mentioned. It appeared it worked fine, however, whenever I unlock my phone from sleep mode, it keeps saying that "loading" and nothing ever happens. I was able to get into my emails, but so far I haven't been able to get into anthing else (photos, apps, etc).

At this point, would it be easier to just do a factory reset on it and jailbreak it again? Or is there something else I should try.

For the most part, everything seems to be working now...except for a couple of problems.

1. I can't tether. When I try it says "unable to start tether". Any ideas?

1. The HTC Sense isn't working. For example, when I try to add the clock widget to the homepage is says "The application HTC Sense has stopped unexpectantly". Additionally, I'm trying to remove the people widget off my home screen, but when I try, the same error pops up. Any ideas on how to fix this?

i would go back to recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps.

Hmm...tried that and it didn't work. I even tried doing everything that you mentioned in your first post again.

There's a SuperUser application that came installed on my rooted phone that keeps closing as well. I think it was part of the jailbreak. If so, that explains why the tethering isn't working.

Any other ideas? Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

I would try and redownload the rom, wipe cache and dalvik-cache and reflash the rom. You may have gotten a bad download or a bad flash. It will not erase your settings and data but just rewrite the rom and replace any corrupt files you might have that are causing your issues.

you need to wipe data as well when flashing a rom. you will have to reset everything as you loose you data.

what recovery do you have?

Sounds like CWM because he mentioned advance menu. Needs to see what version though.

be patient, I know it is frustrating, I have been there and done that as a newbie myself, and not too long ago.

You are doing everything correct, but something may be corrupt in the phone file system and it will be an easy fix.

This is what I would do:

I would download this file: PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip from this link: Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

Follow these directions from Akazabam:
2) Rename the file to PC36IMG.zip, exactly, being careful to not rename it to PC36IMG.zip.zip or accidentally unzip the file.
3) Copy the file to the root of your sdcard (That mean the top level, not in any folders).
4) Boot into hboot by turning the phone off, then turning it back on while pressing and holding the volume down button.
5) Flash the file when prompted.
6) When done, rename or remove the PC36IMG.zip file, or it will prompt you to flash it again every time you boot back into hboot.

That gets you the up to date recovery version of Amon RA. Very good recovery program. Once in it, follow the directions from the people above on doing the Wipes, FULL wipes. Then flash the .zip of whatever ROM you want to try just like described above. I would flash a ROM that is more to what you are looking for, there are Stock rooted ROMs on here too that look and act just like the one from Sprint, they are just rooted and let you have Hot Spot for free.

The biggest thing is be patient, between this forum and XDA, there is literally thousands of people that were just like you just a year ago. You cant really break the phone by just flashing a ROM like this, it is the Kernels and Radios that can mess things up.

I have used Myns' Warm 2.2 RLS5 for six months and loved it, very stable and everything worked. I am now using the Synergy ROM that is out now, and so far so good except for a few little bugs they are working on. Gingerbread is not all that much of a difference, so I would start with a 3.70 Froyo ROM and play a while then up to Gingerbread as more of these newer ROMs get more stable.

PS, DO NOT TRY TO UNROOT YOUR PHONE! The new Gingerbread OTA update is not rootable yet, and may never be, so hang in there and try this and other suggestions until we get you fixed.
