Root how do you judge your kernels?

Guys,

Just want to see what criteria you have for "good kernel"...I think I have found one that works well in my phone..chop suey tends to be running great!

stock battery I am getting about 15 ish hours on a full charge...good enough to get me through the day with moderate usage. phone is very snappy as well. I was getting some internet lag and a few force closes yesterday..but once i cleared cache and dalvik it was fixed...I would say this is an overall "good" kernel in my eyes..

so, how do you judge yours?

also, is lionfish a good one, generally? I know its freedom based..what the general consensus on that?

i am wanting to try anthrax on mikg3.1 as well, but my current set up is trating me well..dont want to mess it up!~

Performance wise:
Most importantly:Is the phone laggy? If not, good
Other considerations:Can it handle intense games without a hitch? How does the music sound?

Battery wise:
Most importantly: Can it last me an entire day of use? If yes, good
Whats the max it can go?

Agressive freedom is best for battery life for me (max 3.5 days) but Anthrax is so far ahead of it in performance that I strictly use it now. I get a full day out of Anthrax, and thats what I need.

hi...i judge it by setting ..setcpu to what i like then battery life then lag of phone and do a run on linpack and quadrent just for benhmark compare numbers only and a speedtest run the 3 tests i use only to compare roms and kermals for myself not to other peoples stats

awesome reply!!!

is that antrhax v4, or the test kernel?

One of the big things for me is how does everything flow together. I have had some Great ROMs with Great Kernels that just acted like they didn't want to get along (Others swear this is the best setup ever) So definitely one of the YRMV. I have had some kernels give me decent performance some slowness not really laggy but slower than what should be yet I got great battery life. Some I have gotten that gave me awesome performance but crappy battery. I'm not sure its so much that particular kernel. I've used for instance "More Freedom" With ROM A and get one result and then again with ROM B and get another. So its definitely how they play together.

Ofcourse I think we all look for the basics - Battery, Performance, Hardware communication speeds (Wifi hooks up in a few seconds compared to a few minutes), Hardware Compatability (Does it work or not), Over/Under Clock, and how much usage can We Get (Intense Gameplay, Long hours of browsing, chatting, and facebooking)

I generally give a Kernel 3 to 4 days to allow it to show me what its cable of. The exception to this is when I am having way to many issues and know that it wont get better.

I don't really mess with kernels as much as I used to, my usage of my phone has changed. I find that so long as I can have setcpu running, and my launcher doesn't lag, I'm fine. Battery usually lasts long enough, and if I have to, I know how to choke some more life out of it.

By that I mean, turn off backlight, gps, and unused radios...

I'm usually right within USB range, so that's not generally an issue. I used to be a huge advocate of Tiamat, but since I've jumped back to sense, I don't use it anymore. Hell, I forget what sense kernel I used to use, netarchy maybe? I'll check my files sometime and see. It's fun to get nostalgic sometimes. :)

And argedion is right, not only may your mileage vary, it will. :D

LOL, I hear that one brotha! I definately know what argedion is saying as well. I went through aggressive freedom, more freedom, and anthrax before finding one that will finally play nice with my phone..chop suey! all the others would lock my phone, drain the battery, etc, etc...think im set now!

I love Freedom-Aggressive and Anthrax as well. All the ROMs that I flash (well they're all nand's except the one in my signature) now have Aggressive (except MikG, that has Anthrax) and I get pretty good battery, always a whole day: texting, twitter, music. Question: when you got the 3.5 days was that with light use? I apologize if I've asked you this question before. I definitely forgot if you answered it already, lol

I remember when I first started flashing kernels, Chop Suey was what I always flashed. It definitely didn't work for me -_- and I was never really patient enough with the other ones so I would go with the stock one on the rom lol

hi..luv my evo but sooner or later we all will b making the jump to 2 and quad core phones i know the devs r on it but hope we have the selection of devs we have now..we r very lucky

For a custom kernel, I want to see performance and battery savings. I haven't had any really bad experiences with kernels other than Lionfish on one of the first builds. And I have also had some issues with random reboots on Anthrax build 4 (though no real issues on Test 9). I am about as anal as they come with battery monitoring, and honestly, I don't think that ANY kernel makes a huge difference. When I say huge, I mean like a 25% battery increase.

I think it mainly comes down to how you use your phone, sync settings and network settings. Try to use wifi whenever you can (and be sure to go into advanced wifi settings and select "never sleep"). Your battery will draw at about -20 ma while sleeping on wifi and about -30 ma give or take while on 3G. So if you really want to save battery, turn off 3G when you're not using it (as many others have said). Without 3G, your battery should sleep at just under -20 ma.

Want to become as anal as me? Download Battery Monitor Widget and keep an eye on this kind of stuff. I don't think there's any mix that is going to double your battery life. But obviously any extra juice you can squeeze out of your phone with a custom kernel is a good thing. So if you can get an extra 15% out of a given setup, then great! For my usage habits, the reality is that I will need to charge my phone at work in order to get me through an entire evening of use, but I am on my phone a LOT.

While we're on the subject of battery monitoring, I continue to be an advocate of monitoring screen time and awake time vs amount of time off charger. I can take my phone off the charger for 16 hours and just let it sit there and contend that I am getting great battery life. But if I play Words with Friends a lot, or use twitter or browse the web and get 3 hours of screen usage out of a single charge, then that's pretty good for me.

Anyway, that's a lot of rambling, but just some things to consider when looking at kernels, and some of my own experiences.

My use is probably considered light. It was definitely a light period during those days. I now use my phone for music much more than I did back then but can still easily get through the day.

MizzouBrent nailed it on the head above me as far as I'm concerned, and thank you for writing it up. Use wifi whenever you can and can to keep your screen brightness down whenever possible (I'll set it on autobrightness if I'm trying to text while walking on a sunny day but other than that its down around 10-20%)

As far as screen on time vs off charger time(what I tend to go with because its more important for me)... I will admit theres problems with both. Playing music for 3 hours will have a huge impact on battery life as opposed to the phone just sitting there, but the screen is off for both of them.

Also, If I'm playing a game (as opposed to just being on the phone doing less intense things) that will eat up more battery even though the screen is on for both of them.

In the end..... gauge the different setups based on what you get. There are simple steps you can take to maximize your batter life, but whether I get 3.5 days or not on my usage doesn't mean your going to get the same thing.

Definitely. I use WiFi mostly in ny room. It's sporadic around campus so I just use the 3G. I've gotta try the auto brightness when walking because keeping the phone on 30-40% in direct sun ISN'T cutting it lol

Right on. The thing is, everyone's usage habits are different so it's hard to compare like this stuff is apples to apples. At the end of the day, you can only try everything and come to your own conclusion about what suits you best.

A little off topic but, is a screen off profile necessary using InteractiveX? In reading I got the impression that it wasn't really necessary, that it would govern down enough on its own.

Correct. Not necessary with InteractiveX. By default it will clock you down to whatever you have set as your minimum with the screen off.
