I use the power bar widget to turn off Wifi, GPS, autosync and bluetooth when I don't need them plus I manually control my screen brightness and turned it all the way down as low as it can go. I've also turned off all haptic feedback options so that my phone doesn't vibrate everytime I press an icon and I immediately shut off the screen when i'm done using the phone and I get 3-4 days out of my battery. Now granted I don't live on my phone, but I use the internet everyday, make plenty of phone calls for work everyday, do some light texting everyday and occasionally use the GPS to find homes I go to for repairs. So i'd say I get better than average life out of my battery because it lasts me a lot longer than I was expecting it to.
To be honest, my phone has had the 50% bug on a couple of occasions and I never noticed it draining the battery any more than normal. I still did a power cycle just to clear it when I noticed it happening, but for all I know it could have been doing it for hours before I saw it and my battery didn't drain quicker than normal.
Then I would think you phone deserves to be replaced. For free. Last question, have you noticed that your phone gets hot? You can try a hard reset (complete data wipe) and start over, but I doubt that would help just by what you are describing. When you do swap it out (or data reset) give some serious thought to going without a task killer
