While I do agree with you on some points, I don't think that these companies build a phone to last a whole two year contract. I have always been extremely careful with my phone. I have never physically broken a phone in my day. However, almost every phone I have had since back to my early TDMA cingular wireless Nokia phone (http://leonardkirk.comicbloc.com/wp-content/OldPhoneNOKIA51652.jpg) ... none of them have lasted the full two years. They have either died completley, gave me "white screens of death", or stopped receiving phone calls right before the two year marks. This can be extremely frustrating, because if you are before your two year mark, its is very hard to get them to upgrade you early as opposed to making an insurance claim when you plan on upgrading anyhow.
I also think insurance is important, BUT I believe that protecting your store bought phone is important, because the quality of the phones that the insurance contractors send out to you is horrific!
The Samsung A900 would be the exception here. My old one is still running after being dropped so many times it is not even funny, the camera is gone (completely, no longer there), the phone looks like it has been run through a dryer for a month, but it still works perfectly!
