how much data do you use?

...wow, some of you guys use crazy amount of verizon internet. I guess that's why I'm excited for tiered plans though, I hardly use mine when I'm at home...wifi is just so much faster/reliable. Silly to be paying so much for unlimited when I don't need it.

Those people tethering (illegally) are why we'll be seeing tiered plans.

I paid for unlimited data and I'm going to use it. And its not illegal if you don't get caught. ;)

You know well enough that tethering is against the TOS for the smartphone data plans. This entitled attitude is what is driving us to tiered plans.

It only takes a few to ruin it for everyone, but I would be eternally entertained if VZW decided to take a few of the bigger users out with a nice bill for their overages. :D

I've used anywhere from 2.5 to about 5 GB a month since I got the phone. The months with higher use are most likely due to Radio Time use over Pandora.

If you already have your account at where you want it, and you don't change things by the time they release the data plan, you will most likely be grandfathered in, So every CSR/Tech I have spoke to tells me. Not that I believe CSR's but you signed a contract so I'm pretty sure they have to stick to it, at least until your contract renews.

BTW updated my above post for you Adamx :) Do you call BS now?

I still have my Alltel Unlimited plan and the people at the VZ store have advised me several times that as long as I don't change the plan to pick up minutes or something I get to keep it... I've resigned my contract twice with VZ since they took over from Alltel too. Plan stays an Alltel plan.

We are all hoping that you get a ticket next time you go one mile an hour over the speed limit too. Just kidding, I don't make a practice of wishing bad things to happen to anyone; it is poor form. I am just making a point. You are likely not a saint and finger wagging is not polite.

There's no finger wagging here, friend.

I know that when I exceed the speed limit there's a real chance that I will get a ticket. If I do, I will man up and pay the fine and move on. Do you think that those who tether without the proper plan would do the same if VZW billed them for their actual use? I can only imagine the whining and crying here if VZW billed them per the terms of their plan.

If it keeps my bill down over time, I'm all for it. :D

Agreed but tbh they shouldn't call it an unlimited plan, if you even Call in and speak to CSR or a Tech, they will tell you its fully unlimited and you can use as much as you want via YOUR PHONE...!!!

So if thats true, tethering (yes its frowned upon) but shouldn't be, Also for those of us Data hogs :P Verizon admitted that they are not tiering the 3G plans anytime soon, and that will start with the LTE plans when available.

I use between 2-3GB a month. Slacker radio accounts for most of that, and I also do about 1-2 hours of browsing a day

You mean the same CSR's who have FroYo coming out every other day tell you that you can tether? :D

The plan is called Unlimited Email and Web for Smartphones. I think their intent is pretty clear, especially when they also offer another plan for Mobile Broadband Connect/3g Mobile Hotspot.

Tethering is not just frowned upon, it is simply not permitted per the smartphone plan TOS.

These features cannot be used to tether your device to laptops, personal computers or other devices for any purpose other than syncing of data; any other use is not permitted using these features.

I'm willing to bet that once the mobile hotspot app is active across their smartphone line, they will be looking for tetherers who don't have the plan. At 1.99/MB for mobile data, some here could be looking at a huge phone bill.

A speeding ticket will look cheap compared to 5GB or more of overages.

Thanks for this thread. I felt like I used tons of my data and wondered what others used and how I compared. I looked at it online today and then found this thread. I've used 93megs and my period is over Aug 13th, so I don't feel so bad anymore.

Now I feel like my phone is under used. :-)

I use wifi at home , but more for speed than data usage.
Due to safety, privacy and I suppose trade secrets? Cell phones are not allowed at work except in break rooms.
So a heavy month for me is still under 1GB. :D

I've never had a tech or csr tell me this, they've always said they don't know when froyo is coming out to cover there backs, I don't trust csr's but to be honest The high level techs haven't let me down since my time with VZW.

And if you ask me, they have so much paper work saying that the interner usage is UNLIMITED, that its bad advertising if its not...

I understand tethering is legit, never said it was, but I stream movies on my and upload very large files to ftp sites world wide for my job, and i used around 20gb a month doing that, even before i tether...

Point i was trying to make, is that they shouldn't advertise it as Unlimited if its not :), but if you speak to pretty much anyone at VZW including the CEO who made a point to say that teir plans will not be coming to their 3G network anytime soon if at all, and that will start with the LTE plans.

So no its not legit, but tbh you shouldnt have to pay to hook up a wire, (or wireless) when if you use the same amount on your actual phone its considered Unlimited and FREE.

This is a screen shot off the My account page on top, showing how many times they call it unlimited... And underneath the FAQ found on the site if you click the Unlimited details.

I've highlighted the important bits :)

Again i'm not saying tethering is legit :) just in-case you think I am.

20 GB'S?? Wow, that cans the rumors of caps.

Yup, last month I had to fix several sites, and upload sevral 2-5 GB databases, and also streamed and tethered whilst out on boat and such, it hit around 38 GB, the max i've used in any one month was even higher than that tbh.

When I was working on the road for a month, Had to tether to get online, hotel Wifi gets spendy, in the expensive hotels, and my employer at the time would pay for hotel, hire car, food, but not internet lol, was quite strange...

Anwyays its not legit, but as long as they think its coming to your handset, and staying on your handset, they seem to say its unlimited.

And the CEO claimed that tier plans aint coming to 3G anytime soon so good news for us data hogs :)

Wow, that's one for the record books. Hmm, now who started this 5GB Cap Rumors? EVO and iPhone owners I presume.

Those people tethering (illegally) are why we'll be seeing tiered plans.

While I would like to believe this, even if folks weren't tethering, we would see the same changes because at the end of the day, Verizon is a business, and no business strives to make the same profits every year. They strive for record profits and plan their business model accordingly.

Business 101.
