The thread may have run its course if "how often do you pray" has morphed into sniping at certain belief systems or religions or even traditions.

For what it's worth, out of 60-some respondents so far, over a third (21 so far) say they pray at some point and for some reason.

The majority (about 40 or so as of now) say they never do (many of those respondents express anger at religion).

I pray without ceasing just as we are instructed. But I do understand that many do not believe and that's OK. You have free will and you are not required to believe.... yet.

Prayer is a big part of my life, but it should probably be an even bigger part of my life.

As for those who believe religions have done nothing for this world, I would ask you to reconsider that belief after researching how many millions upon millions of dollars are donated to helping those in need every year around the world by religious organizations, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Catholic Church, Buddhists, and many other religions.

Here's the thing though, being raised in a Christian home, being sent to a catholic school, I go to know the bible very well. It is then I realized how arcane and insane it is.

According to the bible, god's word, if you have any sin, you won't enter the gates of heaven.

So if your married and you see a hot girl/guy, and you think, "well she's cute"

That's adultery, no heaven for you.

You see a car/phone/house you want.... no heaven for you.

You tell a lie... no heaven for you.

You masterbate... no heaven for you.

Premarital sex? No heaven for you.

Hate someone? No heaven for you.

The list goes on.. it's damn near impossible, and the only way to absolve your sins is by asking for forgiveness.. which the instant your done asking, the VERY INSTANT, your riddled with "sin" again, therefore, no heaven for you. Why would someone choose to believe that?

Like all the millions they spent to pass anti-gay legislation across the country?

i only pray when i go to church (as i am in the church choir) i know i should possible pray more as i am christian - but i dont think there is any need! my fiance isnt christian and i have to think about him so i decided once a week is enough for me!

What kind of church did you go to? I was raised in a non-denominational church...I'm not sure where you are getting this from? BTW, same as you, I think the Bible is a great fictional read. Lots of action...they should make a movie.

i say maybe like 4 or 5 times a week. i have been slacking bigtime in that area..

Why would someone choose to believe that?

Because if they're correct, they live a happier, perhaps more sinless and less dangerous life and go to Heaven.

If they're incorrect and it's bunk, the live a happier, perhaps less dangerous life.

It's a no-lose proposition. ;)

I have found myself praying a bit more lately for the return of TAPATALK!

Well, I gave up praying for something (directly) for myself such as that; it just seems tacky or something.

Try praying for the satisfaction and happiness of forum members in general, is my totally un-divinity-schooled advice.

This just proves my point that religion is based on fear mongering and brainwashing.

My sense of humor is pretty good.. I didn't take your post 100% seriously and had fun retorting with a like-minded bit of personal belief mixed with sarcasm.

I'm too often too quick on the "submit" button before considering one of the smileys over there. ;)

we each have our own beliefs my brother. But in the end we all fear something, death is the most common. If you or anyone else says they do not fear death to some degree they are full of it

Agreed.

But I wonder, what happens to the child that was raised as a Taliban member and kills hundreds of innocent people because they don't know better?

Does he get a free ticket to 'heaven' because they were never enlightened even though he caused harm, stole, raped, and killed?

What about people with severe psychological disorders that kill and rape? Do these people get a free pass?

These types examples are endless and lead to even more questions.

I would just like to know how the heaven and hell 'system' works..

Taliban is not a religion. However, the analogy probably holds up because Taliban is bent on strict enforcement of Moslem Sharia Law.

Christian murderers in the name of Christianity are all over the place and always have been.

..etc.

Meanwhile, the message at the center of those religions has to do with love and obeying God as best as we can. It is the departure from and gross distortion of that center that serves the violent among us; they make the news. Peaceful people do not, at least not to the extent of the crazies.

For the record I was raised Catholic and was required to go to mass every Sunday by my father (and Sunday school after mass for a certain number of years), so I do know a lot on the subject of Christianity.

Well, none of us know much about the subject of Christianity from our Sunday school and mass and sermon and Bible experiences. I'd hazard that less than 10% of my knowledge on the subject came from those sources and I sense that same dynamic in others.

Assumptions and unsubstantiated numbers aside, growing up with a religious background was enough to open my eyes to what I perceive as severe flaws in religion, to inspire me to go out and learn more about mine and others, and religion as a whole.
