How to clean my screen on my Droid?

xguy

I have a spot on my screen that is Gorilla glass. I must of had some motor oil on my hand or something. Anyway I tried by wetting a cloth then tried alcohol and the smudge wont come off and is driving me nuts! lol. When I read something it is there and have to scroll up or down to see the print. I'm thinking about goo gone but if the alcohol didn't phase it IDK.

Any ideas will be appreciated!!:)

If it's motor oil, then dish detergent (like Dawn, joy, etc.) will work wonders. Goo gone is for adhesives. Just be careful to only get the spot. You don't want any liquit falling into open ports such as the speaker.

Also, don't use anything amonia-based (Windex) as that will damage the plastic. If you want to use anything water-based, stick with distilled water (on the cleaning cloth, not the device), or use products such as KlearScreen.

Well I'm baffled. I tried the dawn and it didn't work or even smear it so I don't think it was oil. If it's possible I think it might be from the inside. I guess I'll just have to live with it. :(
Thanks

Dont know how easy it is on that phone but id look into replacing the glass. Im not OCD but something like that would do my head in lol :D

Does the screen look anything like this?

Also, what phone do you have, so I can research the coating(s) that the screen may have. Not all glass, Gorilla or otherwise, is created equal.

It is a Droid X. No my screen doesn't look like that. It's about 1/4"3/4" mark. It kinda looks like an eraser mark:confused:

Then we can rule out oleophobic coating damage. Without seeing it, can't tell what it is. Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Thanks for your help. As soon as I learn how to do a screen shot I'll post it.

A screen shot won't capture the issue if its caused by the hardware. A screenshot is a software grab, ie it captures the image the device *thinks* its displaying.

If the screen is cracked or otherwise affected it won't show in a screenshot. You'd have to take a picture of the device itself as in the image posted earlier.

Ok thanks for the reply, I can't seem to find out how to do a screenshot anyway. I see if I can't capture it with my camera..don't know about shooting glass but will see.:)

Get one of those El cheapo screen cleaning sets (micro fibre cloth, spray, small brush for removing dust).

Thanks but i don't think sandpaper will take it off!:D. I've tried alcohol and Dawn dish detergent and didn't even phase or smear it.

I've had this issue before there's a product you can pick up from car parts stores that removes motor oils/grease from your hands. I had a spot like this on my old iPhone 4 and a spot of this stuff on a cloth works wonders. If you can't get hold of this type of product try sugar soap as that removes grease too. All the best. Hope you manage to get it shifted.

Thanks, but I now believe it's beyond cleaning. I made it worse when I put dawn on it. Looks like a new screen or phone for me.

:(

OK, I really don't think it was oil film on my fingers nor know how this happened. The reason I know is because it didn't smear with the dawn or alcohol. It must be under the glass but weird since I didn't get liquid or anything on it. Again I am at a loss. I did capture a couple of pics. It really made it bigger when I tried to clean it- go figure.:confused
