Root How to disable that damn system write protection

Sorry for being anoob and not reading every last word.....
But, I could've swore Carbon was dev'd for KK....
I dug everywhere... Went thru all of hroark's posts....
All I could find was PAC....
I was considering BUTTERNOOB V.2 ...
But,I keep making excuses to keep using SYNTHETIC....
I dunno... Maybe I should do something to my tablet to get it out my system....
But, the only DEV for the ARES 8 had a tif over fluff... And cut out and took his deoxed ROM with him.....
Sorta deja vu'ish....
Like I've seen that before.... Hmmmm

I got a quick question... I'm not a noob when it comes to flashing stuff on phones, but the ButterKat kernel instructions for the switcher is confusing me...

So you're telling me... that I have to flash the kernel and switcher every time I reboot? Or is it just the switcher?

the switcher allows writing to system IN android. the restore allows you to boot your phone normally (system read only)

you just need to make sure to use the correct restore/switch zips (that include the kernel you use)

maybe someone else can pitch in? I'm running stock rom and kernel.

When you flash the switcher, you gain R/W privileges while running Android. This is needed if you use apps that require R/W. But this means that you won't have R/W in recovery. For that, you flash the restore zip.

So:

Flash the switcher zip to use Android (this will reverse the boot, meaning that "boot recovery" will actually boot system and "boot system" will actually boot recovery).

Flash the restore zip to use recovery.

After flashing either, it's a good idea to make sure you reboot into recovery before doing anything else.

Also, and this is critical... Make sure you flash the correct switcher and restore for your ROM. Of you flash the wrong one, you will break your phone.

You're welcome. This was difficult for me to understand at first, too. It took me a little while to get my head around it, so I want to help others get it, as well.

You first need to flash the zip for the ButterKat kernel because it contains necessary files that are not in my switcher or restore zips. Then, after that, you flash the switcher zip. Once you do this your phone will boot the opposite way as it did previously. Rebooting recovery will boot you into android, and rebooting system will boot you into recovery. Your phone will continue to "boot backwards" for as long as you have the switcher installed. If for any reason you need to wipe, flash, backup, or restore ANYTHING in twrp, you MUST flash the restore zip and then "reboot recovery" first. After you flash the restore zip, your phone will behave normally like it did before you flashed the switcher.
Also, like Radix Liberatim said, you have to use the correct switcher/restore zip for the ROM/kernel that you are using on your phone. Don't worry though, flashing the wrong one won't "break your phone". Worst case scenario, it won't boot into android until you flash the right one. What CAN break your phone is if you flash a switcher then flash a ROM or kernel, restore a backup, or do any wiping in twrp. You have to pay close attention to what you are doing because if you get overconfident and start doing stuff without thinking first, your phone will join the ranks of those who have already bricked.

Masterchief,
Thanks for cleaning up behind my mistake. I have treated these zips like I would a motorcycle or a firearm: with the utmost respect, always thinking about each step before acting. While I do want to make sure to pass that respect (read "mild fear") along, I also want what I say to be accurate. Thanks for the correction.

Words to "flash" by lol.

No, you only have to flash the kernel once. A good rule of thumb is to backup the current stock ROM w/o the ButterKat Kernel, then flash it afterwards.

As for the SWITCHER and RESTORE zips, use the SWITCHER zip to gain R/W access for cpu tuning apps such as SetCPU, then use the RESTORE zip to hopefully lock the adjustments in place.

Indeed.

So masterchief87 in my case a use kingroot then a flash trwp I rebooted to twrp and flash SuperSU. can I flash cm12 rc5 without bricking my phone?

And thanks for this tutorial.

Can it be possible that a stagefright patch flashable zip could be made? I'm on AICP atm, I'm thinking about going back to synthetic or candy5 though... Amy suggestions if I should stay on AICP or go back to candy/synthetic?

I'll probably go back to synthetic. But, I had an issue with the audio codec on that ROM in which I play music, the sound cuts out. AICP doesn't have the issue, but I'm guessing its something with VIPER4Android on that ROM, thankfully I have the audiofx zip, same one on cynanogen.

Y are u leaving aicp?

I'm on Resseruction Remix, and its awesome so far. No means of switching back. Question though, when android 5.2 (marshmallow) comes out, will there be anyone to make a ROM for it?

Marshmallow is actually going to be Android 6.0, and honestly I doubt anyone will be building marshmallow ROMs for us. If you want marshmallow, get a nexus or a one plus

Ah. But hey, I love my zmax and unless I get rich (hopefully, haha!) I have no means of switching phones. But IMO, Google should've just called it lollipop 5.2, because I don't see a lot of dramatic changes in it besides the new permissions and battery saving tech. That's my opinion, Google has the power to wield and break and as a company, if that's what they wanna do, we see it fit.
