Root how to do a logcat?

Could somebody give me a quick run down of how I do logcats? I've noticed with all these new roms in development they need more than just "(insert feature here) doesn't work, please fix!!!1!"... they need a logcat specifically for the problem. Since I would like to contribute to development in any way possible I need to know how to do that.

So could someone... anyone who knows please share that information with me? Thank you.
 
try the app called aLogcat. It's on the market. it automatically logs everything. When you reach whatever problem you're having, go to alogcat and save it. Then send them the txt file or put it on pastebin.com
 
I see, so when I have aLogcat running it is constantly recording? Then once a problem occurs I just save (which is all the information up to that point) and send it off? Just making sure I am understanding this correctly.
 
Yeah it runs from the moment of installation.
When the incident occurs, just open the app and save the logcat.

I just remembered that there is a share option too. That would probably be easier lol
 
If my memory serves me correct.

If you do adb logcat but want it dumped to a text file do:

adb logcat > logcat.txt

Should produce the logcat.txt (or whatever you chose to name the .txt) file once your done.

(Might be alittle off havent used adb in awhile)
 
Excellent, thanks everybody. I'll get ADB up and running when my laptop arrives, for now aLogcat should do.
 
I was not familiar with the ADB method. It seems pretty useful, although I prefer the app.
You can use it without the computer, just go into your terminal emulator and type su then logcat. Saving should work the same way
