Help How to force phone to 2G only?

I am wondering how to force this phone to use the 2G (or E or GSM) network only.

NOTE: I'm NOT talking about just turning off data

My father has this phone and lives in an area where the phone constantly switches from 2G to 3G and drains the battery.

I have a Captivate and mine does the same thing. I found how to get to the menu screens to set mine to 2G (GSM) only. I still get data, etc.

Anyone know how to do this on the LG Optimus V?

the Optimus V is a CDMA network phone. (Sprint).

AT&T uses GSM networks (EDGE).

the Captivate is a GSM network phone

Thanks! I probably should have known that, but didn't.

In any case, is there a way to force it onto a slower/older network only - whatever it may be called on Sprint?

Looking at the Optimus S (which is almost the exact same thing as the Optimus V) here--> LG Optimus S - Full phone specifications , it seems like the 2G network is called CDMA 800 / 1900 and the 3G network is called CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.

I tried to look for a solution to your problem but I can't find any. You can probably do it on the Captivate since it uses a version of Android customized by Samsung.

Hope this helps.

1.Dial *#*#4636#*#* which will go to the phone's "Testing" menu.
2.Click the "Set preferred network type:" button and select "CDMA only"...Should have been set to "CDMA auto(PRL)" orginally.

1x icon will show instead of 3g now...don't remember if it needs doing on every reset/reboot as i'm to lazy to try...

He could be one of the many of us experiencing the 3g reconnect issue which can be troubleshooted using that very menu and similiar steps(causes massive battery drain also)...but if he is getting 1x and then 3g again and data is working, then he is not one of the rest of us.

Let us know if that works as it should.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it and I'll let him know. I don't think he's experiencing the 3G errors I've read about.

The problem - and I have it with my phone - is if you live in a slightly rural error on the line where 3G coverage stops, the phone just keeps switching back and forth and burns battery. I also find that the 2G network is more reliable (even though it's slower for data).

I saw this mentioned on this forum somewhere but I have not checked it out. It might not be for the right networks.
