[How-To] Force the Official Android 2.2 Froyo Update for the Motrola Droid (FRG01B | Update 1 of 2)

Sorry about posting so much, but it just switched back to 1x again...

So I rebooted it again and had no connection for about 5 minutes. I then pulled the battery and it came up but it took a while for the 1x connection to come up. Once it did I dialed *228 and did the upgrade roaming and just plan upgrade options. After it did that about 2 minutes later it switched to 3 again for about 5 minutes and all of a sudden it went to no connection for about 30 seconds and currently its on 1x. has anyone else seen this problem? I dought its the towers in my area, I have never had a 1x connection at work.

Thanks

I would like to very much thank the OP for the wonderful work done here. I came to work this morning and to kill some time browsed around to find out when 2.2 would be hitting the Droid and stumbled on this thread. Went ahead and did the entire upgrade using only my Droid since work PCs will not access commercial internet.

Upgrade went very smoothly and have been running for about 20 mins now. My advice is to follow the instructions verbatim and you should not have any issues. I will now be spending my workday exploring 2.2.

Once again, thank you OP and Droid most definitely does :)

WOW! I did the manual update yesterday. Attempted the first time, and it didn't take. I did a battery pull, and the second time was the charm! Went as smooth as silk!!
Thank you for posting this information. The more I play around with 2.2 the more I love it.

I have downloaded about 12 different copies, including the one directly from Google and still nothing. Fails at "Failed to verify whole-file signature". I have downloaded and copied over multiple times, I know about the file extension. It still doesn't work....WTF....uggggh

I have tried every download on this site including the one directly from Google. All the file sizes have been 45.2. Tried both methods through computer and via phone.
Here is what I get every time

E: can't open /cache/recovery/command

-- install from scdard...
finding update package...
verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

I have seen a few posts about the "e:signature verification failed" but nothing that mentions "e:failed to verify whole-file signature"

Never been rooted.
tried 8 times then did a factory reset and tried another 10 times.

Any ideas??????

Same here....UGH

Been running since this morning, still going well. I'm loving flash. Aside from that what are the most useful upgrades? I haven't found them all just yet.

Updated without any problems. Most noticeable change is the application tray. Also the ability to change home screens after a long press on anywhere on bottom of screen.

I'm looking forward to testing blue tooth dialing when i get to my car later.

Thanks for the procedure!:D

Trident
I'm rooted with only 2.1 update 1. Do I have to use Astro file mgr. because I have EStrongs file explorer and will that work?
thanks
:)

Sorry, just came across this thread from df.net. Without reading through 20 pages, does Trident's OP count as an unofficial confirmation that FRG22 will be the next OTA? i.e. the same one that p3/cz leaked right in the middle of the FRG01B OTA?

As a follow up to my post quoted above, i have some good news and some really bad news.

I did another factory reset and decided to wait for the OTA.

The Good:
I got the OTA notification on Saturday!!! Yeah!!! 2.2 is at my fingertips!!! come on baby , come on baby, Everything downloaded, Yeah!!!

The really Bad:
The @#$% @#$% @#$% @#$% install failed!!!

The just Ok:
restarted phone and 2.1 is actually working better than it did before. Go figure.

The Bad:
I took it to a Verizon store for support (which is what Verizon's site says to do if install fails). Employees have no clue how to get 2.2 on a phone or what happened.

The Sad:
Waiting to try the OTA install again; that is if I ever get another OTA notification.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with RSDlite, but I got it working for me without the OTA and the update.zip methods. It went quick too!! Couldn't hurt to try!

So, I'm assuming you have already activated the phone and are getting service. Did you get it used? If it already is rooted than you wouldn't get an OTA update. You should have been prompted immediately after initially setting up your phone to get the 2.1 update if it is running stock.

Peter Alfonso's site has all of the official and rooted versions of Android here: Peter Alfonso

Does anyone know if the FRG01B "Master OTA" will update straight from 2.0.1? I think it might.

I guess I'm wrong to think that rooted means you won't get an OTA. I've been reading that a lot of people who are rooted are getting the notification to update.

As far as having trouble force updating, there seem to be a few people with that problem... just read as much of this forum as you can... some people have tried pulling the battery when it fails and when trying again, it will work. Some have tried downloading from a different location. It seems like some phones just won't take the update as well. I wish I could help more, but I'm pretty much a noob.

I've been reading this site for a few weeks. Finely got the nerve to try the computer 2.2 install on a mac. The instructions are clear with no steps missing. 2.2 is smooth as silk. If a 61 year old "grey beard" can do this any one can. Thank you so much for easy update.

I have to withdraw my gripe. After using the car dock some more, I get it now. Key point is that the screen doesn't LOCK it just goes dim so a touch wakes the display up. This is actually quite nice for night driving since I keep my brightness at 100%. The only trick is learning where the 'sweet spots' are on your apps so that you don't trigger any actions when waking up the screen. Oh! and the screen does NOT dim when using Navigation and Nav is displayed on the screen which is a good implementation. If Nav is running in the background and another app is in focus, the screen will still dim.

Have you or anyone else discovered how to add app shortcuts to the 3 unused buttons in Car Home? I just got Froyo last night and discovered the new layout while driving this afternoon. It looks like they are programmable but I can't find any place to setup the buttons.

just forced update on my wifes motodroid...went pretty smooth used the first link (my droid does). Has build FRG01B. but didnt install flash? this happen to anyone else?...can she get it or have to wait for OTA?

I woumld like to test the upgrade.
