Root How To Get Updated

Hey my phone keeps telling me there's an update available and it wants me download it. However I am rooted on the stock rom with the stock kernel. And I don't want the update to remove my root or anything of the sort.
Plus I do not want the bloatware that's included with the update.

you should never do an ota. most likely then not it will not work anyways. you can goto settings/sytems update/HTC software update and uncheck "scheduled check" and that should take care of the notifiactions. however, if you plan on flashing any roms that have the latest ota built in, you may want to update your radios. read the rooting for dummies guide in the after rooting section about ota's. there should be instructions on how to update your radios.

if you have older radios and try to use it with a rom that is using the latest software update it will not work. however, if you already using a rom with the latest ota then you should be good to go.

So how can I get the latest OTA, mainly the swype keyboard. But I dont want to install NOVA, blockbuster, etc.

Easiest way is to make a nandroid back up then wipe and flash the latest radios and a stock rooted rom or a custom rom. OTA can screw up your phone if it tries to install it. What recovery are you currently using?

As long as it is 2.6.0.1 or higher, it should be able to back up your Wimax(4g) Keys. make sure you make a backup before flashing a radio update. There is a risk when you do it of losing your wimax keys and having them backed up means you can restore them if they are lost. Other than that, you can look at this list:

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

There are stock rooted roms list along with custom roms with the sprint bloatware removed. Under the radios, you will want the zip for [ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

Nandroid backup, wipe data/factory reset, wipe davlik-cache, flash the radios, flash the rom and reboot. It might take a bit to boot up the first time(5-10 minutes in some cases) so be patient.

The only thing I would add is that you can look in the rooting for dummies guide - section 6 for specific instructions on how to do this if you're unclear. Everything ocnbrze and Xtreme have said is true. It's really not as difficult of a process as it sounds.

So guys, its still asking me to update, and I dont know what to do here. Can I just use titanium backup to backup everything (apps + settings and such), and then install a cool custom ROM and kernel?

If you are comfortable with what you have then you can go to settings and turn off the notification for the OTA update. If you want to go with a custom rom, there are a TON to chose from though you will likely have to upgrade your radios to be able to run them.

If you use TB, only backup and restore user apps and data. Do not use it for system data or it can cause problems across roms.

Well I'm not very comfortable with what I have because turning on the 4g lags my phone a lot. Plus half of my apps aren't able to update, they simply try to install and then say update failed, so I have to keep cancelling the download.

But how do I make titanium backup do ONLY the user apparently and not the system apps? Also can I use mybackup pro to backup everything else besides apps?

And do the new radios come with the ROM and kernel?

When you're in Titanium Backup (TB), click backup/restore > menu > batch > backup all user apps. That will ONLY backup the apps you select and not the system data. As far as the radio, you have to update that yourself and someone has already pointed you to a great source in the rooting for dummies guide.

Well Im confused from the Dummies guide, because from what I can tell, it wants me to completely wipe everything and "update" by installing another ROM. Im talking about just an update.

Technically speaking, an OTA update is sort of like flashing a new ROM. It replaces a lot of what is in /system. I don't know exactly how their process works, specifically for OTAs, but more than likely, they just flash img files like you do in an RUU or with a PC36IMG.zip. They just skip data. But when you need to get to a new SW version manually, you're just going to replace everything in /system with a new ROM. This doesn't have to be a custom ROM. It can be stock, but it's the only way to do it. The "correct" way to do this is to wipe everything, including data. In an OTA, data doesn't get wiped. If you want a clean slate, and want to ensure you have no problems, you should wipe data when you do the process manually. You'll also need to update radios. Basically, once you're done, you'll have done what the OTA update would have done, except you won't have flashed hboot, and you'll have wiped data. The process is definitely different, but the end result is similar. You probably don't *have* to wipe data if you're sticking with a stock ROM, but it's cleaner. That being said, the rooting for dummies guide has another option listed for when you're updating to the latest update. You can flash the PC36IMG.zip version of the Sprint Lovers ROM. It's very close to stock, and will update everything in one shot. You will still lose data, though, so you need to backup.

And uh, quick question, is it possible to actually browse my nandroid backups and pull out stuff that I need? Like not actually remove it from the backup, but get it from the backup, a copy.

Its actually easier for me cuz I just find ones I've thanked you for :)

Haha, that's one way to go about it. For whatever reason, I always have a hard time finding specific posts I've made. Sometimes it's just easier to type it all out again... (sometimes).

So when I install a new ROM, can I still use the cool Word of the Day and News widgets? Because other people are saying that HTC widgets wont work.

Be nice if you could thank yourself :)

Lol

If it's an AOSP ROM, you will not be able to use anything HTC Sense-related, period. If it's a Sense ROM, you can use all Sense app/widget, provided the developer didn't remove them.
