Root HOW TO: Install 2.1 and Root (for dummy's)

Did you unzip the file that you downloaded? I made that mistake at first and it said it could not flash the phone since there was no .tar file.

I moved the cl14 file and replaced it with the DD03 into the same location C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary.

I think my problem is that is is not unzipped. I noticed it did not have the .tar at the end. I am now trying to figure that out using 7zip.

Don't unzip the downloaded ROM. Just put it in the binary folder.

If you have unzipped it then you need to re-download.

With the leaked version of 2.1 from this, are you still having problems downloading certain things from the market?

Yes. And we will continue to have Market issues until the official 2.1 release comes out. These Betas are not recognized officially by the market and so we cannot see protected apps. Unprotected apps are not an issue..

Sorry Mods. Please move this thread to the Root sub forum!

I think this is the right forum for this. Every dummy, I mean noob, I mean someone who don't know anything about it would go here first. You got me so interested, I almost had the urge to buy a moment instead of waiting for the Evo. :D

EDIT: I hope this get stickied in the Samsung Moment forum and not the all things root forum. It's just easier to get to if ever my curiousity get's the better of me and buy a Samsung Moment instead.

Question: how can we verify if we have root? I have SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3 installed and tried all the various methods to root. None worked. I just tried flashing V5 over V4 (is this okay?) and tried to uninstall an app through terminal emulator but it states its a read only file system. Am I doing something wrong or did I not achieve root? Thanks for ANY Help.

First - In your terminal emulator type "su" the '$' should now change to a '#' showing that you are rooted and have 'super user' privileges

Second - You need to turn on read/write permissions (instead of read only). Use this command in the terminal emulator:

mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/stl5 /system

After you are finished removing unwanted apps use this command to bring it back to read only:

mount -t rfs -o remount,ro /dev/stl5 /system

What does this mean? "...save it in root-v5.zip ( get it here) and save it in the root folder of your Moment's SDCard"

Does it mean to simply place the root-5.zip on the card and not inside a folder? Also, what is terminal emulator and how do I get it?

1. - Yes, it means save the v5.zip file in the root directory of your sd card (meaning not inside any other folders) so that you can apply from zip once in recovery mode.

2. - You can download Connectbot free from the market. It's like running the command prompt for windows on your PC...typically for more advanced users. If you don't want to use command line prompts (IE - ADB or a terminal emulator) you can try DroidExplorer, although I've never used it, I've heard good things.

I don't think that you need connectbot or any terminal emulator to complete the V5 install. You do need to have the 2.1 with Joey's recovery that Ramiss gave you directions for. Also, his directions show you how to install the V5 zip also. This is how I did it (which is the same as Ramiss stated). I downloaded the V5 zip to my computer, and hooked up my phone to my computer, in the notification bar I selected to let my computer "mount" to the SD card. Once mounted I copied the V5zip folder to the folder on the computer that represents your phones SD card (same place where your phone pictures and music is stored). Then I disconnected the phone, turned it off. Pushed the talk, end, and volume down at the same time. When recovery popped open, I selected install from SD, and found the file and installed it, then select reboot. That's it, your done. I did use connectbot to fix the streaming music app issue but that is for different thread (there is one on the moment "root" forum).

Hey, Ramiss (and everyone else!)
Well...I've tried it, and...it didn't work. :(
**My Moment is about 2 weeks old (already has CL14 on it)
**I installed the Sprint Utility on my 'puter; and moved the old file.
**I DL'ed the new file (SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL.7z, 67,266KB), and moved it into the Binary Directory.
**I ran the Utility, & pulled/reInstalled the battery; but when I held the VolDn/Cam/End buttons, the phone just turned on, and started searching for signal, etc. (slower than normal; but never the "Downloading" screen the Utility shows.)

I tried it three times...
My work 'puter is firewalled, so i can't go to LiveChat for help.
Any ideas?

Did you unzip (7zip) the file before you put it in the binary? It is a must. Also, make sure it is the file with Joey's recovery attached (unless there is a better one already). His comes as a .tar file (unzipped), and has the recovery built in. This is name of the file I used SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar

No...one of Ramiss' posts said *not* to unzip it...so I didn't
Joining SDKDevelopers now, so I can DL the other file...

You don't unzip the file that you use to install the V5 and live wallpaper files, but with those files you don't use the SWupdater. Once you get the correct file on your phone (SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar), you don't us the SWupdater again unless there is a new version of 2.1 leaked (better than DD03). To put it simply, the file (SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar) include the leaked file of 2.1 and the recovery method of updating/modify/rooting it. Trust me, it is what you want. I installed the leaked file first only to replace it with this. The best part would to be able to see the shock on your face when you realize how easy it actually was.

Forgive me if its been said already and I missed it but will this only work with windows or is there another method of doing it if all I have is a macbook pro?

Ferret fell upon his a$$."

**Got the new version from SDX (SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar, 158,376KB), moved it to the Binary Folder
**deleted the other 7z file
**ran the Sprint Utility...
Same issue... Phone turns on, but no Update.

I've rebooted the 'puter, *and* rebooted the phone...I'm connected using the OEM's USBmicro cable. I've done all of those things in every order I can imagine.

I know the 'puter *sees* the phone...I get a "connect bleep", and I can open the SD card for storage.)
Just checking...the .tar is *NOT* supposed to be on the phone's microSD, correct? ...The phone is supposed to take the Update from the Binary Folder on the host computer?
If no-one has a better idea...i'll take it home, and do it all on *my* 'puter (our IT department is.....draconian...about locking things down...)

be sure you have unplugged the usb cable from your phone while you are booting your phone up. if my memory serves me correct i had this same issue a while back. i believe that was the reason.

Don't worry, I made that mistake at first. I actually just renamed the file. I've never heard of a 7z file before. Quick Google search sent me on my way.

Once mounted I copied the V5zip folder to the folder on the computer that represents your phones SD card (same place where your phone pictures and music is stored).quote]

So all I have to do is just drag and drop teh V5zip into My SDcard folder? The one You can find on "My computer"? Basically just put it on the SD card and not into a folder or anything right? Gotta be sure...
