how to install 2.2 froyo fast and easy

Is this better than cognition? I'm wanting to install 2.2 but not sure if I should do this one our cog

idk what cognition is but it runs a lot faster and I mean faster and has better GPS and power saver options. Their is a built in tast manager and more setting options. The list goes on. Better keyboard. Just a 10x better phone. It didn't seem to delete any files too. All the pics are there and songs.

its an early leaked version of 2.2. its not on the level of any of the custom roms, i ran it for a day or 2 back when it came out

oh...I don't know how to put cognition on my phone or anything like that. If it was easy I would like to do it but hey this was very easy and a great upgrade.

Yeah, I'd go over to XDA Samsung Captivate - xda-developers and click on "Captivate Android Development" (the other subforums are useful too fyi). Start reading the threads with "[ROM]" in their title, there are hundreds of pages on some of the threads but the FIRST post always has updated information in it and directions on how to install. Your linked directions will work but most people would call them quick and dirty, as in there isn't a master clear involved (even if you're flashing from stock master clearing is advised).
Since you already flashed I'd HIGHLY recommend that you check out the new (and MUCH better) ROMs over there at XDA. I personally use Serendipity by MikeyMike, he updates a lot, addresses problems quickly, and has great taste in themes and aesthetics.
On top of reading up on XDA I refer you to the CapFaq by sremick here - Flashing a ROM - aka Hacking your phone - CapFAQ there are step-by-step very involved videos posted by people over at XDA which will hold your hand while you flash. I used the first video set by connexion2005 for my first flash (I didn't flash cognition like he did but the steps are the same for almost all ROMs). Before the video links sremick et al. also posts Risks and benefits of flashing a ROM - CapFAQ which discusses the risks and benefits of flashing (even though you've already taken the plunge it doesn't hurt to inform yourself).
If you need any other help you can post here and I'll do my best to answer but I'm nothing compared to people over at XDA. Happy flashing!
If you are going to flash froyo at this point, I would recommend the cognition 3.02 rom. It's based on the OFFICIAL froyo release for the rogers captivate in canada. Older roms use the international galaxy s version rom which isn't a perfect match. This is as close to an official froyo version you are going to get. It's basically the froyo version with all the rogers crapware taken out and the voodoo lagfix applied.

I was really nervous about flashing a rom but this way is pretty foolproof. It would be really hard to hard brick your phone. My advice would just be to make sure your phone is plugged in securely so that it doesn't fall out and with that video series, the way they recommend to put it in download mode requires to take the battery out. Make sure you carefully put the battery pack on so that the battery doesn't fall out during any part of the process.

What process are you referring to? If you're talking about the OP's link then I don't know but I don't think so. That linked ROM is straight from samsung firmware and I believe no one had rooted it at that point. HOWEVER, I would not use that firmware. Read my post above yours.

I used the process in the op and haven't had any issues. It's pretty much what his title describes, quick and painless. It took me 5mins from download to install to reboot to working phone with 2.2

I read your post and it doesn't seem to say there is anything wrong with it just that you recommend something different.
Just wondering because I am using it and if there is an actual issue with it I might consider going the long complicated process listed in other post to change it. Otherwise if it's simply a matter of it not providing root access or that is has all the default non-removable at&t crap on it then really I don't see a reason to change.

Turthfully, there is no long and complicated process with many of these roms. It's a few steps tops, and with the number of walkthroughs available on XDA in both text and video format, it is very easy to do with even the most basic understanding of the device.
I can't speak to the rom that the OP has linked, as I have not tried it myself. If I were to guess, I would imagine it relates mostly to a level of refinement. These custom roms are built and refined over a period of time, and they include nice extras.
Personally, I've been using Perception 10.1 for a while now, and it is very nice. I am, however, considering the idea of giving the Serendipity rom a romp.

Where pretty much talking about running a stock version vs running one that has been modified by a person. The version linked to in the OP is a stock version, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. Being stock no your not going to get the in depth customization that you would with one of the other modified version but that's not what some people want either.

Is there by any chance anywhere that one can read reviews comparing the different ROM's on a non-technical level? Even the Mobile Tech Videos only seem to compare within the versions of the same ROM, is there anywhere that gives a good non-technical explanation of the comparative strengths and weeknesses of the different ROMs?

^I'd like to know as well. It's hard to know which to choose and I'd rather not try every single one, I'm not saavy enough to do this multiple times, lol.

Cognition is a good, safe bet. I prefer MikeyMike's ROMs, as does Endoran, above. I'm running Serendipity, and it's really a great ROM, it's fast, themed nicely, and for me so far has been very stable. I'm on 3.5.2, but I'll go to one of the 4s when I have enough time (I think he's up to 4.1). Follow the videos, read, read, study, and make your own determination (I did keep an eye on and see what people here chose, experience is right under your nose, you just have to look for it).

WOW! This was extremely easy! I followed the directions. And boom, my phone hooked up to the ODIn 1 click and installed a new phone!!! Now, you have to make sure you find the right downloader- the website will redirect you to a few places to download the FROYO file, one of them will work. And, this totally eliminated my process.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly error! (duh) But, anyone who has this issue, this is one good way to do it.
1.DL the file.
2. Open file.
3. Turn off phone. Make sure USB is connected to the computer. HOLD down VOl. up and down button, and plug the USB into the phone.
4. Click Start on the ODIN installer.
5. sit back and wait!

Except if you had read this thread you'd see that the linked instructions are for an early leaked beta of Froyo, which has since been found to be quite buggy and is vastly-superseded by the various modern/current hacked firmwares out there. I can't imagine anyone actually suggesting using that old leak at this point in its original form.
