Root How to install ICARUS 1.1 by Isaacj87

Hello. :) First post.
Another lurker unmasking themselves!

Got my Ascend a week ago and was completely ignorant about the capabilities of an Andriod phone. That is, until I ran across all the wonderful people here at Andriodforums! I started with z4root and Titanium Backup to streamline a bit and ended up taking the Icarus 1.1 plunge two days ago. It really is a fantastic thing! All praise to Isaacj87 for the wonderful ROM! Thanks to Jazz (and others?) for organizing the instructions so efficiently a noob like me could figure it out and to all those with who posted insightful questions, answers and suggestions. Everyone involved really did a tremendous job.

My experience:
Install went smooth as silk, just follow carefully the instructions. Had to do the mms fix cuz I'm MetroPCS, very simple and has worked perfectly, including picture mms. Wondered about apps2sd functioning properly but a memory check before and after installing an app, plus the great tools suggested by ʞunɟ024 above have confirmed that yes, it is.
OVERALL just awesome; faster phone, longer battery life, nice lookin color scheme.

MY ICARUS 1.1 QUESTIONS: (forgive me if these are noobish...or have been answered elsewhere...I looked)

I am running Titanium Backup. Will this interfere with my Clockwork Mod backup and ability to do a restore?

Seeing how Icarus is so fast, is it at all beneficial on the Ascend to run SetCPU? (Other than for the ability to profile my CPU processes.)

Is it advised to continue cleaning cache as I did pre-Icarus? (Cache Cleaner NG, Cache Mate. Unnecessarily redundant?)

Upon the review of many posts, I junked Juice Defender. Is anyone running a battery saving type app and what has your result been? (I'm using nothing with no complaints about battery life, but you know, the grass is greener.)

Has anyone run a launcher other than LauncherPro with Icarus? Results?

As I did before Icarus (z4rooted), I froze the Android keyboard for Better Keyboard. So far so good. Can I also freeze the Icarus stock music player and go with PowerAMP only?

UNREALTED: I also have a Motorola Droid 1 FRG83D (2.2.1? - don't have the phone with me) and would like to set it up with a custom ROM. I've searched Androidforums only briefly (possibly incorrectly) but haven't seen any post with instructions as user-friendly or performance as universally hailed as on the Icarus 1.1 post here. Any instructional links or ROM suggestions would be great.

Once again, thanks to all those who facilitated the creation of my "NEW" phone!

Any and all answers are appreciated!

Andrew.

hey andrew, a few answers for you here...

1. titanium backup (i call it titbu for short) will not interfere with your cwm restore. titbu doesn't seem to interfere with anything as a matter of fact.

2. yes you're redundant with cachemate and cache cleaner ng. i kept ng as it seemed to clear up more space while my phone was running rooted, boosted stock.

3. setcpu is still useful, especially with games and live wallpapers. i use cpuboost.

4. all "battery saving" or "task killing" apps are useless imo and the ones i have tried had actually had a negative impact on my battery.

5. yes, you can use other launchers. i'm running golauncher ex (witch comes with a handy shortcut in the drawer to kill apps running in background) as i was before i flashed icarus and it runs beautifully. it's the best launcher imo and also lets you choose tighter grid spacing so you can fit more icons per screen and widget resizing so those unnecessarily large widgets (such as the power control bar) can be set to a more reasonable size.

6. i froze the icarus music player and use power amp with no issue.

7. look in the motorola droid forum for answers on that particular phone.

hope i helped and welcome.

not sure if i formatted my SD card right. I thought I followed everything but I'm not seeing the 2nd partiton. I tried Link2sd but it's not finding the 2nd partiton. When it starts i get a notification saying
warning
It seems that you applied App2sd, please uninstall and revert to original. Otherwise you cannot create link with Lin2sd.

Did I not create the 2nd partition successfully? Can i format sd card again to fix it?

The only hiccup I remember during Icarus install was at the step: Wipe dalvik cache
I remember seeing some type of error (something not found, I think)
But everything completed so I kept going and everything else went smoothly...
Could that be the issue?

I'm seriously debating restoring through CWM (to hopefully retrieve my contacts, if they were saved there) then reinstalling Icarus again...

Any suggestions?

UPDATE:
Through Titanium backup I am seeing the other partition.
SD card(a2sd) 239 MB (225 MB free)

So this is where my apps should be installing too, right? Can I make this partition bigger? Whats the max? I only have a 2GB card so what would be optimum size?

you can re-partition through cwm and see if that works. you may need a terminal emulator to enable a2sd (it's not Apps2sd, it's some custom form that works way better).
if you need help with that look in here http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/289834-a2sd-confusssion.html for the instructions.
with a two gig card i wouldn't worry too much about eating more than 500MB because thats about a quarter of your space and if you plan on saving pictures or music you may want that space. i have a two gig partition on my 8gig card and it works fine though, so maybe you can go into the 500MB range.

as for your contacts, i'm not sure if cwm recovery can retrieve those but if you can i recommend saving them to sd. go to contacts, press menu button (actual button, mind you) manage contacts, backup to sd. i'm not sure if thats the exact option path (my phone is in the room and i'm outside) but it should be about right. save the contents of your sd to your computer before flashing back or you will loose them though.

Thanks Tokenpoke. I wish I had thought to backup my contacts before. DUH!!! I'm pretty sure those are gone for good. But i guess its okay but I had my facebook synced and had WAY too many contacts. This time I'm not doing that.
I think I'm gonna invest in a bigger SD card...

OK
I just went to my dialer to add a new new number to my contacts and as I was inputting the number, a long list popped up showing my some of my contacts from BEFORE i installed Icarus... I only have about 5 numbers in my contacts now so my old contacts HAVE to be around somewhere right??? Any ideas on where to look so I can try to restore numbers from my old contact list???

If not then i'll just go one by one and copy them over ...lol
Or maybe its just adding facebook contact info because some of the numbers don't look right.... DANGIT

hey, i finally installed icarus but i have an issue. it wouldnt let me do the partition and flash. if i did the partition, then the zip wasnt there anymore. i thought i was doing it wrong so i kept tryin. i realized i was doing it right and that the zip would be there before doing the partition. after partition, nothing. so i skipped that part since it said it was optional and it went thru, but i want the partition. how do i go about fixin that?

Im on step 5. I keep getting the android recovery screen and not cwm recovery. I ran fastboot and recovery according to OS.
Also, am I supposed to unplug the usb cord while my phone is on the huawei screen after I run the two files?

You are awesome guys and gals. I stayed up for 2 hours holding those damn buttons. My fingers are sore, lol. Poor phone

Jay, run cwm and scroll down to partition SD. You should have no problem.

Tiger yes, when installing cwm after running the fast boot files you disconnect the USB and pull the battery for ten seconds.
Continue following instructions.

Quick question. So I download cwm recovery files to my comp and I just run them from there the whole time my phone is booting? Then just contine?

okay everything works fine but the mms which i really need and use...i did the new apn instructions but it stills dont work...can someone please help me out and if not can someone tell me how to set the phone back to metropcs stock so i can use my mms...thanks!!!

Jazz, Toke, Isaac, God, anyone....HELP....lol

I have tried the *228 activate code as well. Did not work. I have also checked the APN settings again and are all correct as well. I even tried to create a new APN and it doesn't save it. :( I cant change or modify the existing cricket settings either. Data is turned on as well. This does have me a little baffled. I did all the steps from z4root onto cwm and then to the icarus rom and followed them all to the letter. Any help with this at all would be great. I have exhausted all i know i can do.

Eccentric...

You made a backup with CWM right??? Put your backup on your sd card and reboot to CWM, goto the backup and restore section. Then choose restore. Browse to your backup file and restore. It will put your phone back to the way it was before you put Icarus on.

thanks for the info but i cant find the file anywhere on my computer searched for it i dont think i properly saved it to my computer which sucks!!! :(

I would do a cwm recovery of original rom and re-download the Icarus mod.zip to try again.
I'm on metro so i know nothing about your carrier but maybe its just a slight corruption like i had.

Thanks Tokenpoke! Titbu'ed my current so now I can play. I prefer Go Launcher as well and for exactly the same reasons. PowerAmp is a must and no point in having both running. Gonna goto work on my Droid now.

Ok now when i run recovery-install it is saying waiting for device. I cant update the drivers, i already have them. WTHeck? 2nd day and this is getting frustrating. Im missing directions that arent there? Thnx in advance

i was actually just about to post concerning the mms problem.

i simply followed the instructions in the third post... twice.
it seems that after i re-booted my phone it deleted my new apn so i had to re-do it. i've reset the phone a few times since then to see if it happened again and all seems well.
i read on another site that you can fill the info under Username with (yournumber [format as 5556667777])@aaaf.mymetropcs.com and that might help but i haven't bothered testing this yet.

try checking to see if your apn is still saved and if it is make sure it is set as per the instructions in post 3. if that doesn't work try changing your username to the above and let me know how things work out.

are you on a mac?

and are you positive that you are using the right button combo?

(hold) vol down, end/hangup
(tap or hold) power.

your phone isnt booting it's in some crazy developer mode. your screen will not continue past the huawei logo. try running install recovery again.

on a mac its tricky to get the cwm to run right and you are best off using a windows computer or emulator.

the only thing i can think of it that you need to reformat your sd card. i had the same problem when i first went to icarus1.1 and it worked fine.

well this aint cool... my phone has been booting for about five minutes.... i reset it so i could partition a new card and now it's just showing an android pissing on an apple over and over again....
