Root How to install ICARUS 1.1 by Isaacj87

Hi All,
Great forum. I've rooted and then I installed the Icarus 1.1 mod. It looks like it installed okay, great instructions, by the way, but it is hanging on formatting sd card, after install is completed. I have a 16 gb card, and I formatted, as per instructions after install completed, but its been formatting for over an hour and a half. Is this normal or is the phone froze.
Thanks

I have a 16 gig card as well and I had to format mine using a program on my PC. I was able to leave the card in the phone and use the USB connect to the computer. I used a free program called MiniTool Partition Wizard which allows you to format the ext2 partition also. I did Primary Fat32 at 14 gigs and then Primary ext2 at 2 gigs and it appears to be working fine, although I am still looking at how well the a2sd is working.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try it. I finally gave up and completed the install with the original 2 gb card

Hi fjs! Welcome to the Ascend Forum! Glad you got Icarus installed but sorry to hear you had some probs with it. Are you with Cricket or MetroPCS and what kind of SD Card did you use? The higher the class of card the fewer problems you will have. I think this is one of the reasons some are having probs with their cards. The SD card that came with your Ascend, while being only 2GB, is a top end card. You want to be sure you are using at least a class 5 or higher SD card or you will simply not have the transfer speed you need and this can create freezing probs.

Hi Red! What kind of SD card is your 16GB? And where did you get the MiniTool Partition Wizard? Is it available at the market or where did you install it? Hey! The speed freak in me needs to know these things! LOL I'm going to be posting some more info on a2sd today in the original posts so hope it will address any probs or questions you have. :)

WTG! Thanks for the update! :D

Jazz - I bought this card Newegg.com - WINTEC FileMate 16GB Mobile Professional Class 10 microSDHC Card with SDHC Adapter although when I bought it 5 days ago it was $6 cheaper, but still a good price. MiniTool is a program for the PC, it works great for formating your SD Card you can get it here if your interested - Best Free Partition Manager Freeware for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Also if you haven't read my previous post you can see my struggle with the A2SD and how I was able to get it working. :)

Hi again Red! Thank you very much for such a detailed reply.

Yeah that Newegg SD Card is for sure a good one. I've been looking at getting the very same card. I'll for sure d/ld the MiniTool program so I will have it if I need it.

Gonna read your a2SD post now. Thanks again for sharing with us! :)

Well I have been trolling this site for about a month now since I got my Ascend, anticipating the release of the Froyo update, I even tried the unofficial Froyo but the UIM error makes it worthless. Then I found the Icarus 1.0 update and was very please with the changes it made, but now with Icarus 1.1 and the A2SD working and MMS working I really don't see the need for the Froyo update, unless of course it was to add MultiTouch, other than that Icarus is superior, A2sd is much better in Icarus than it is in Froyo. Also thank you for being such a helper for folks that need assistance, your quite the busy body on here.

Hi Jazz,
Thanks for the welcome, the sd card I ordered is from Newegg and is a A-data 16 GB Class 10 Model AUSDH16GCL10-R. I've used A-Data ram before and never had a problem, so I took a chance. I used the card a few days before installing Icarus 1.1. My wife also has an Ascend, but I'm the guinea pig for all the mods.

You're welcome, fjs! Yeah...I'm going to get that same SD card real soon. Huawei recommends Kingston but for the price...I'll go with Newegg. LOL Do you mod your wife's phone too?

Hi, May I ask if Icarus 1.1 fix the problem on the Ascend
with the Pause (,) inside a number?
Also the problem with the Bluetooth not able to start the voice command function?
I'm asking because those are IMHO the worst problems with the Ascend that make it un usable for my but MetroPCS didn't want to take it back and I'm stack with this phone.
Thanks for the ROM keep the excelent job.

My wife is waiting to see how mine turns out, then she'll want me to mod her's. Also I'd like to use my 16 gb card but how would I partition it. I'd like to use Redgrave's suggestion, and then copy over the files from my 2 gb card.

You just partition it the same way it says in these instructions. First thing you need to do is save all your SD card contents to a folder on your computer and then drag them back to your new SD card when you get it in.

Should be fairly simple.

I have a question about this part of the instructions:

Optional:

Now, we need to partition the SDcard. In order to fully use DT's apps2sd, we new 2 partitions on our sdcards:

- While still in "advanced", move down to "Partition SD Card"
We'll need the format to be "256" and "0" for swap. I recommend using "256," but feel free to try a larger size. YMMV. Reboot.

When it says reboot does it mean there will be a reboot option or does it mean hold the power button to turn off the phone and then turn it back on again?

My phone has been stuck on the boot screen for about 25 minutes. I am starting to panic. Is this normal? Should I disconnect the usb cable?

you installing icarus? and also was you installing it while usb was still connected to the computer via usb>

I don't see a MAIN folder for my sd card. Is there somewhere else that I can place the ICARUS 1.1 file?

Which means to place it into the SD card directly. Not into any folders that are already in there. Which you do know that you'd have to format your SD card to make sure this works right. Plus you need to make sure the Icarus file is not unzipped. It has to remain in it's zipped form.

Wow, I'm totally glad I only had a 2GB SD card. This sounds like a major issue that I'd hate to have dealt with. Glad you found the way to get it working properly. Perhaps they will add that into the Icarus update post. ^^.

P.S I live near the Gandy bridge. LOL.

you suppose to unplug the usb, it's in step 5.

5)Once it is done, unplug USB cable and take out the battery for 10 seconds and try to get into recovery by turning phone off and pressing and holding Volume Up, Call key, and Power until the black Clockwork screen comes out. Keep those buttons pressed until the clockwork mod screen comes out..Check to see if Clockwork is at version 2.xxx. If it is showing version 3.xxxx, select reboot system now and PM me about it. You can not move further. However, if it is showing version 2.xxx, move on to the next step.

i use 512 instead of 256 and use 0 for swap, it works so much better...

6) Select backup and restore. Select Backup and do a backup. This is going to take about 5 minutes. After that, go all the way back and select reboot system now, connect the phone to the computer, press Mount on the notification that pops out in the phone, view your files on your sd card, find the clockworkmod folder and copy that file to your computer. Keep the phone mounted and connected to computer and proceed.
