How to move apps to sd card on an unrooted device: A noobs guide. **Updated 09/02/11**

The only suggestion I can make is factory reset (perhaps back up data with mybackup off the market) and see if that helps you run it again?

partitioning cards is for a2sd+ / apps2sd+ which indeed is a root only solution.

This solution does not require that and should work.

I'm not a particular fan of this solution to be fair.

But then again: I am not sure it is working.

After the reset and checked with getInstallLocation and it returned 0. I set it to 2, but still my apps install to internal.

To me it is not such a big deal because now Apps2SD is working, so I just move them.

I have done everything you said, everything went fine but it just wont let me move apps... somebody please help...

Go back 1 page, read the last 2 posts on that page, then continue to read this page. A possible answer is there.

If you follow a guide and have a problem, the next step is often to read the rest of the thread. Often you are not the first person with the problem.

Is there a way to do this with a mac computer? I have downloaded the android-sdk for mac to my computer... but then I can't follow the steps because there is nothing saying sdk manager.

If anyone has an idea?

There is something that says tools android and says it is a unix executable file - is that the one?

Thanks

thought i'd give this a go but when following the link to the SDK i get the message that Java development kit(jdk) not found. Do I need to go to the java site and create an account etc - can see anyone else mentioning this??

You only need to do this:

1) download and install htc sync

2) download sdk and extract to C:\

3) Connect your phone by USB and select the HTC sync option

4) Open command prompt
(in Windows)

  • Go to Start > Run
  • Type "Cmd" and press OK

5) In the black window:

  • Type "cd\android-sdk-windows\tools" and press enter
  • Then Type "adb shell" and press enter
  • Then Type "pm setInstallLocation 2" and press enter

Thanks for the help - stupid question coming up - How do I tell if it has worked? Followed the instructions but nothing much seems to have happened with the phone - I think I have worked that bit out in that only 18 mb is still showing as available - so i guess it hasn't worked.

The pc side all seemed okay - help!

Does the above look correct?

All it does is install new apps on sd card and allows you to move installed apps to sd card that couldnt be moved previously.

Go through your apps list looking for apps on the phone memory and see if you can move one.

Biggest space is taken up by Adobe Flash Player 10.2 (12.05MB) no option to move.
Then Maps 9.81 - no option to move.

But hang on -it does look like I have some new options to move further down

HTC_IME mod can move - whatever that is 5.44M

So maybe all is working okay - thanks so much for your help

Yes those first two (flash and maps) are exempt from being moved.

HTC IME MOD is your HTC Input Method (Modified) i.e keyboard. Themed perhaps. I would recommend having that on phone memory too.

But yeah, looks like its worked.

The picture shows the phone isn't connected properly. Does it complete an HTC sync? Is usb debugging enabled and on, and is it in sync / charge only mode?
Hey Williamj & Hanimal

Has the "phone not properly connected" situation been resolved?
I got the exact same message as Hanimal. What basically happens is (after following all steps 1:1) the phone & pc say Syncing now then Sync complete, and then the prompt kills the process at the "adb devices" command with message ADB Server is out of date.
Simultaneously the pc displays message along the lines of "phone not properly connected, please disconnect USB cable and reconnect in 10 seconds" while HTC sync displays disconnected status.
The first reason I thought of was maybe the SD card was the problem (I am not using the original SD HTC delivered with my Desire) so I switched back to it - same problem.
I then un-installed and re-installed the latest HTC Sync from the site, the original HTC Sync from my original SD card, and an inbetween version whose installer I still had on my pc as I'd needed HTC Sync for something a couple of months ago.
All with the same frustrating results.
I should add I have only used sync once, to install an app which didn't come from the market.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Many thanks
B.

can you try the entire process again, missing out the htc sync steps using just the 5 steps I mentioned earlier?

Thanks SUroot,

Before I do, should I switch to the original SD card which was provided by HTC, or can I go ahead with my own SD card which I purchased later?

Cheers
B

Scratch that, it worked, thanks! Unfortunately the largest space-takers (Google Maps etc) are unmoveable, but still. Many thanks for your help! Cheers.

Hello the guide looks looks good to follow however just a quick question using a experia Sony play handset do I also hv to install the htc drivers considering the play is not a htc device please advise.

No, but you may well need your own phones drivers. Usually phones that need drivers, come with them in some form or another.

ok manged to do this yersterday, tried to root my xperia play today, and it all went wrong i gave up, after managing to unlock my boot loader, so do i have to redo this whole procedure again, after a hardreset?

Had worried about doing 'stuff' to my phone - followed SuRoot's details and phone now has 25.9mb - up from 14.2mb - no probs - thanks SuRoot for super info.
