How To How to root and install droid 2.1

Hmmm...I tried to revert back to 2.0.1 to see if recycling between that and 2.1 would fix the task manager bug, but now it seems I have a problem.

.......

Although I like 2.1, I don't want to be stuck.

I feel your pain man....so easy to do...not quite as easy to undo.

If I had known it was not easy to revert to 2.0.1 or unroot I never would have done it. I have tried following every tutorial to restore OEM and so far I have been unable to figure them out (or maybe it is the phone or a conflict bewteen the methods of rooting and unrooting) whatever it is, I also feel stuck now.

I am hoping maybe in future revisions they will build this in to the droid root helper or SPRecovery

I wonder if I'm supposed to wipe all the data or something first. I have to believe that I'm just missing a step. The backup is in the correct place, so I don't know why it's not working. The only thing I can think is I'm missing a step.

Ok, figured it out. Found a person on alldroid.org posted about the same problem. AllDroid.org - View topic - [Rom] Nexus Droid

I deleted the backup from my SD card, then copied it from my computer again and gave it a few mins this time. However, I think the real problem was that I had the backup folder in another folder. I accidently put it on my SD card like that the first time. This time I made sure the backup wasn't a folder within a folder and it worked.

I DID IT!!! DAMN good thing I saved a 2.0.1su nandroid backup.

Starting from 2.0.1 probably the only reason this worked. But with some experimenting in ADB and ADB Shell I was able to restore the old recovery menu. then with a few facotry resets and some ADB codes I found on Doirdforums.net to remove busybox and superuser I have gotten back to 2.0.1 without the SU icon in the app tray. Now when I hit factory reset...it really does factory reset where you have to press 1 and let Verizon reprogram your phone.

I hope this really has fixed everything...and I wont have created new problems that will come out later. I guess when the 2.1 OTA update happens (whenever that is) I will find out when my phone either does or does not update.

Anyway...PeDe...thanks for this great tutorial and this help getting back to OEM

Some day I may venture out and try this again...but for now...I am very happy to be back in my plain old droid 2.0.1 :D

To the OP, there are a few broken links in your original posting. Seems as though a lot of files on alldroid.org are broken. Don't know if its due to maintenance or what, but if you could update those links, that would be great.

I've been a lurker on this site for quite some time. Not a noob to hacking phones. Decided I didn't want to wait for Motorola to release 2.1 since it would be our luck that they wouldn't do it till the end of this year, as they have a history of procrastinating on these things.

Anyway, since there were a few broken links in the original post, I had to search around the net, but was able to find what I needed, and along with another site, rooted and flashed with no problems.

2.1 is meh. Active wallpapers lost its novelty after a few minutes. Don't really see much of an improvement, though I'm sure the official motorola 2.1 release will work better.

Anyway, at some point I may want to revert back to my factory settings. If I understand it correctly, I may be able to use the stock 2.0.1 update.zip and just flash that to get back to an unrooted factory settings.

However, the file "droidbr.zip" listed in the original posting in this thread is nowhere to be found. I'm guessing that this file is needed to revert the bootloader/recovery module back to stock - is this correct?

If not, how can we get the original recovery screen back? i.e. get the phone back to what it was when it came out of the box.

Thanks.

@ deeznutz...

yes...you need the droidbr.zip That has the recovery and boot images that I used to get back to OEM...although I could not flash the boot...so had to flash recovery..then do a serious of factory resets and the commands to remmove the SU and busybox.

Otherwise you will always end up back at the SPRecovery.

I dont know what is going on at Alldroid I cannot log in there anymore, and emailed the admins...but clearly more is going on.

thanks for the reply - you confirmed my suspicions, both about droidbr.zip and alldroid. I created an account at alldroid today, thinking that maybe I needed an account to access the files posted there, but it was a no go. Was able to log in, no problem, but files were unaccessible. I even tried getting some posted themes, etc and nothing appeared to be available.

I'm hoping to be able to find the droidbr file elsewhere on the net - if anyone knows where else I can get get it, please let me know.

This thread has been the best!

when i restart in recovery i get E:can't open/cache/recovery/command

The day I got my Droid I wiped it (no mods done to the phone - just like a clean install before I use devices). That message than appeared.

Its been on my phone for a while now and has had no impact on rooting or flashing

i've followed the instructions but it's still not working for me. i've done everything more than 10 times. where could i be going wrong?

I have been asked to relay to the best of my ability how to get back to 2.0.1 OEM if you are also having problems using the methods provided in OP.

I will do my best...but it was very much my experimenting around. I was praying the whole time I did not do something unrepairable.

First and most important is that I can only say that this works for sure from 2.0.1 w su.

The reason is that before I upgraded to 2.1 I did an advanced nandroid backup of 2.0.1 w/su. None of my attempts to restore from 2.1 worked. I always ended up with a blank version of 2.1...ALTHOUGH...now that I think about it considering how I ended up reseting... it could work from anywhere I guess.

So first I restored to 2.0.1su (may or may not be necessary)
I downloaded DroidBR (placed both on sd card as suggested)
I mounted Droid to PC and opened adbshell
typed SU
then flashed recovery image (flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img)
I was unable to flash the boot.img...said I did not have permission...which is wierd no?

I rebooted into recovery anyway and got the OEM recvoery menu. So I figured I was close.

I tried to install the original 2.0.1 updat.zip we all used to update manually back in Nov...but got some error. So I tried a factory reset. This worked...I saw the unpacking image and then had phone reboot to the original set up menu (had to contact verizon and press 1 to program phone). Skip set up!

This put me back to 2.0.1 OEM but still had su and busybox. From here I mounted the phone again used the ADB Shell Commands I found in this post to remove su and busybox...
[How-To] Back to Stock, no su, no BusyBox, etc. - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

(if using adb shell, don't forget to put phone in USB debugging mode)

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
rm /system/bin/busybox
rm /system/xbin/busybox
rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
mv /system/recovery-from-boot.old /system/recovery-from-boot.p

after than I did one more factory reset...and VOILA!

All the files can be found in some of the other threads cited in this thread or secondary sites.

The file droidbr.zip can be located here

I had to get all the files from this thread and like 2 other threads on two other sites - hopefully at some point, the links in this thread will be updated. Its a great thread.

My bad - I didn't look at it carefully enough, and did not see the warning there.

For future reference, would you mind boldfacing that first paragraph to make it a bit more obvious?

As for the files, I already had them downloaded, I just wanted to see if the sizes / versions were different or not.

I am pretty positive that I have all the files that have been offered here - let me gather them up and I will put them on my MediaFire account and link back here.

These are the files that PeDe7 originally had linked around New Years. Just a bit after that I believe he changed it for another ROM (and / or changed the procedure to get it on the phone) and I may not have everything.

I hope he can confirm if these are all the files.

Anyhoo, here are the files (that I have):

The original 2.1 HumanCyborg ROM (as linked by PeDe7 when he started the thread): http://www.mediafire.com/file/ux92wxdznxz/HC 2.1 SU DROID BOOT.zip

The Clear Status Bar HumanCyborg ROM (found from alldroid.net): http://www.mediafire.com/file/dz3n1imvgtn/HC 2.1 SU DROID BOOT CLEAR STATUS.zip

for all you noobs out their, you actually dont wann use the droid root helper listed in the previous post, just download the rooting tools and it has the droid root helper that actually worked. alos, make sure you copy the tools folder to the root of your sd card.

Thanks HF - I know the procedure changed in terms of getting the 2.1 onto the DROID - but was it still using the hc ROMs that I posted?
