Root [how-to] root: Gingerbread 2.3.3

Cool, glad I helped. If that had not worked, I definitely do not have the technical expertise to help, though I wish I did. I would be interested in learning more.

When you click the download link for Revolutionary a box appears, enter your phone model, serial number etc and thats where it generates the beta key, PASTE this in to the command box when it asks for the beta key

Also, you need to use the Optical mouse button to select the install zip from card, not the power button

FYI

Once you are rooted, you can re-install HTC sync if you want. I would only advise doing so if you are going to continue to use the stock rom.

I am using the stock rom and I use it to get the pictures off my phone. Works pretty well.

ok so i'm rooted....now what?

i don't really care about different ROMs I just want to get rid of bloat, thether and overclock the cpu. how do i do that?

i tried TIBackup and the first app i attempted to remove was blockbuster. when i did the phone immediately rebooted and a scarry screen with an ! and a triangle around an android character was all that came back up. thought i had bricked the phone some how but a battery pull fixed it. anyway, got the phone running again but blockbuster is still there.

so what am i doing wrong and any advice on my other two goals?

dont uninstall system apps... its safer to install a debloated ROM cause they patch all the gaps left by uninstalled system apps. to tether i recommend Barnacle from the market. And cpu manipulating requires a rooted kernal. check the rom root thread and find whatever one works for you and install it using the instructions on the thread

I've tried many times, by pasting (even from a separate word file as another user suggested), typing, using lowercase and such and am still getting an invalid beta key message. I verified the key numerous times as well by retyping the info in on the download page.

***edit***

As I expected, human error was to blame. In looking at the serial number, I mistook a 0 for an O, and although it looks different here it doesn't on the phone. In looking closely at the revolutionary window when it asked for the beta key, I noticed my error since they too reported the serial number, thank God. ID10T problem solved.

READ THROUGH THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT LEAST TWICE. MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING NECESSARY BEFORE STARTING THE ROOTING PROCESS.

I need to say thank you very much for the instructions that you gave. It took me 2 evenings of searching to find instructions that were more than "download this and root your phone." This is only the 3rd time I've rooted a phone in a year and a half, once they're rooted they're done, installing ROMs is a cakewalk, but its very easy to forget how to root.

My gf's phone is now rooted and she's happy. Thank you :)

To anyone that's going to post up how to mod a phone - please don't assume that everyone knows how to do everything. Not all of us are programmers and developers. It might take you 2 extra minutes to type out a post but it helps the rest of us.

:)

Help,
Downloaded all files, installed the HTC drivers as specified in the first post. Phone is debugged, and fast boot is off. Set In charge mode. I ran revolutionary.exe, entered the beta key, success. The problem lies in Im stuck at the "Zerging Root.... this might take a minute or so.. " way longer than 5min (about 15min each time). Restarted the process 4 times now, getting no further. Thanks...

Edit...
Tried using my net book to do this, downloaded and installed drivers other associated files, prepped phone, same thing. Stuck on "Zerging Root".... been about 15min now.... help?

Checked, there is not any programs called HTC Sync installed, just HTC drivers. ??

What am I missing?

Just my luck the morning I was planning on rooting, I received an OTA update. As they say, snooze you lose! Anyone have any sucess rooting GB 2.3.4?

I saw that update notice right when I started the phone for the first time, luckily I was allowed to hit the "snooze" button on it and deferred it.

I can report that it is possible to root tethered. I had to manually install CWM.

On a new phone the update appears somewhere in the middle of syncing and you only get 25 seconds to hit the back button to 'snooze' it.

I think I may have messed up my install (or whatever you want to call it). I accidentally rebooted my phone during the "do you want to install cwm" step and after going back to the windows command screen where I was running revolutionary I hit 'y' and it did that but now I'm stuck at 'flashing revovery over fastboot' and have been stuck for quite some time. Can I just close the window, reboot and reconnect the phone and start revolutionary over again?
