Root [HOW TO]: Root, Install a Custom ROM, Fix the Market, and Add Flash

gotta admit, the whole internal vs. external Clockwork install is kind of confusing. nice to have both methods explained right here for anyone looking for clarification.

Yes, I agree.. it is great to have both methods explained.. :)

Also, you can hae cwm install as part of nvflash, which is also great.

I was stuck in a boot loop and had to nvlash with cwm to repartion to fix it. took me 2hours to figure that out by reading diffeent forums.. but a lot of smart people (like yourslef) with great advice.. also had to manully install 1.1 -3588 stock update as cwm was install in the nvflash..

now, on to flashing a new ROM, I had vegan Harmony install before and like it very much, but want to try others.. any advice or suggustions??

A new version of the Honeycomb ROM was released last weekend -- alpha 4.1 -- and I finally made the leap. Definitely worth it!!

The UI is a huge transformation from the Android 2.x ROMs, a really major improvement. The ROM seems a little slower than the older ones, but it's plenty fast for what I use the Tab for, and the ROM seems solid.

Again, though ... this requires the 1.2 gTab bootloader, so do your research first.

great, thanks for the feedback. now I need to update to 1.2 bootloader first. Any idea on this one?? and then look for Bottle of Smoke.. got it..

Thanks, and anyone else who has feedback, please add..

Both XDA and Slatedroid have tutorials on the bootloader upgrade process, and it's not too difficult ... but you do need to follow the instructions very carefully, and not be afraid of the nvflash process. (it's easy to "soft-brick" the device, where it won't fully boot up, but nvflash will fix that, and I've never heard of anyone totally destroying their device by doing this. So it's safe, but you need to follow directions closely.)

Beyond that, my main advice is to start with as clean a device as possible. There's a "format.zip" file on XDA that will clear out some extraneous stuff that nvflash won't erase, so I'd recommend starting with that. And of course you should erase the data, cache, and Dalvik immediately prior to installing Honeycomb.

I saw you nvflashed your device successfully but you replaced the stock recovery with CM. I believe you'll need to be on stock recovery in order to replace your bootloader.
If you can get on 3588 with stock recovery, if you want...you can load Clemsyns Roebeet+Clemsyns HC combo which will flash the 1.2 bootloader, cwm that's compatible with 1.2 bootloader, Bottle of smoke and his overclock kernel all at the same time.
After that, you'll have all the necessary requirements to flash any other 1.2 roms including the newer versions of HC.

If you don't want to do that, then you can flash them one by one. But it is really really important that you don't use the wrong CWM recovery when flashing a 1.2 bootloader.

Didn't even have to run market fix. Signed in with gmail ID and it synced and immediate market access. Also prompted for flash install automatically. Flawless. thanks all - its a real machine now.

I downloaded clockworkmod and dropped it in the gtablet like instructed but when I try to start the gtablet holding down the start button and +volumn it shows "Recovery key detected and Booting recovery kernel image" and it just sits there. It isn't doing anything.

If I just hit the start button it comes up on the ViewSonic screen with the birds and doesn't go anywhere else. Can anyone help me get it back to it's original state? At this point I just want it to work!

But you're so close! :)

Which Clockwork mod did you download and where did you "drop" it in? Let me know which directions you followed, post 34 or 35?

Also, just out of curiousity, where did you get your gtab?

Hi,
First off, thanks for being so tremendously helpful to a growing community of gtab users!

I am a flagrantly technologically challenged noob user. So please bear with me here.

I got a new viewsonic from a tigerdirect sale just few days ago and I checked the version. I am definitely on stock and 1.2 bootloader (1.2 - 4349).

So I have never rooted/romed. I have just charged this brand new tab. With an unusual level of aspiration, I have decided I am not even going to use the stock version and straight away jump to a custom rom. I am trying to figure out what are the exact steps for simpletons like me.

I will truly appreciate your or any senior users' guidance on how to proceed further. So far this is what I have figured out:

1. I should first lean how to nvflash.
2. Then I should root
3. Then I should flash with a rom

Did I get the above right?

Finally, I thought I should go with Beasty's 2.2.1 ROM (Adam) + Clemsyn ver 11 1.5ghz kernel Beasty's 2.2.1 ROM (Adam) + Clemsyn ver 11 1.5ghz kernel (only 1.2 bootloader) - xda-developers based on user feedback. But I am bowled right off the bat. There are no instructions that go step by step.

If my suspicion is correct that there are no step by step instructions, how closely can I follow the instructions given in the original post in this thread?

Seems like I should not be performing the download and install of clockworkmod because I have 1.2 correct? If yes, from what step onwards can I follow the original post as blindly as possible that would be applicable to my 1.2 bootloader and that would allow me to install the rom mentioned above?

Your help would be so very tremendously appreciated, you have no idea! Please help.

Other than using clockwork version 3.0.2.8, the instructions should be the same. As far as I know, there is still no need to root before installing a custom Rom on the g-tab as the Rom will root while it installs. I have not been able to locate a link to 3.0.2.8 yet, but I will update the original post (as well as this one) as soon as I do.

SolidOrange, thank you! Does this mean I don't need nvflash and if I just follow all the steps in your original post as long as I use the new CWM?

As long as you use the correct version of clockwork and a ROM designed for the 1.2 BL, nvflash should not come into play. You would only need nvflash to switch bootoaders (for whatever reason) or to recover from bricking your device. With all the roms I have gone through, I have still never had to use it. *knock on wood*

okay i installed the clockworkmod file from the link provided and then unzipped it, it broke into two files 1.recovery 2.update, isnt the 2nd one supposed to be titled update.zip or does it matter. also what would i need to do if i did softbrick my tablet(knock on wood)

Don't rename or unzip that update file. Keep it as is. If you happen to softbrick your gtab, you can always nvflash your gtab back to normal.

morning all, can this root procedure be done for the gpad pro? also if someone owns one or knows can they let me know of a good rom to use once rooted.

cheers.

Hi guys, after researching for 9 months to find just the right tablet and reading the ins and outs you guys have posted here I decided to jump in and buy a gTab 10.1 for $260.

With the state of the HC builds right now (and with the updated one coming out recently) should I just go Vegan for a little while and update to HC later, or do you think it's worth it to jump straight into HC land?

It's still shipping so I have no clue if I'll have 1.1 or 1.2 yet, but I'm excited to get going so I figured I'd try to pick your brains before I jumped in. Thanks for all you guys do, it's been some great reading the past couple weeks.

Unless you really need the camera, there isn't much that you can do with VEGAn that you can't do with one of the HC builds. I switched from VEGAn to GTabComb and I'm nothing but pleased. It's running faster than VEGAn, it's darn close to as stable as VEGAn, and the HC interface absolutely kills the standard FroYo interface for the tablet.

Awesome, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I couldn't care less about the camera, I have cameras for that...and an Incredible with a 10MP camera.

I really want HC, but I wanted to make sure I got a stable build. Thanks for the input!

Has anyone had a problem with the Android Market since the new release came out? I installed the VEGAn Ginger rom (VEGAn-GE-7.0.0-RC1-Harmony (GB2.3.3, stable build)) a few days ago on my GTab replacing the stock rom. I am on the 1.2 bootloader (1.2 - 4349). I used the instructions provided by SolidOrange and they worked very well (thanks SolidOrange:)). I had no problems with the installation and the market came up without a problem after the installation. I love the VagaN Ginger rom

Ok so I installed CWM but I don't have an option to create a backup. Is there something i did wrong? I made sure I installed the right one, and I am rather tech savvy, but I simply cannot figure out the problem. Like I said before, I boot into CWM and in the list of options no create a backup is available or install from zip. Thanks in advance

Do you have a choice that says Advanced? That would be where you could backup or restore would be. Install from Zip might also be under that.
