xmr, thanks for picking up my slack in here. things have been crazy for me lately, not leaving much time for the forums, but i am back! glad to see all the new rooters up and running around here.

I was wondering about you. Haha. Go get some OC kernels. :)

I am a newbie and I want to root my new GTab and install tnt lite. In following the procedure I notice that my internal SD card already has update.zip and a recovery file. Is this new? Is it ok to overwrite them? If I choose the procedure to use the external SD card to store them on and reboot, how does the firmware know whether to load the external or internal SD card? thanks

You will have to replace those files in your internal SD. if you want to save them for later use, just copy them over to your PC first.

having a little trouble with this . so i followed every step up to step 12. i went to this link
[ROM] VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1 [UPDATED - 4/11] - xda-developers
ran it through when i went to reboot my gtab it was stuck at the viewsonic birds
is there something im missing? is there another part i must dl?

could be the ROM. in the world of android, not all devices are created the same. some will have issues with certain ROMs, some will have issues with certain processor configurations, etc. long story short, try loading a different ROM and see if it will work for you. VEGAn Ginger is still relatively new, so it may not boot/work correctly on all devices yet.

well, somebody had to make the first post! i have already put this info in the general tablet forum, but there are new ROMs out there and i know this is the first thread any g-tab owner will be looking for. if someone can sticky this, i will try to keep it as up to date as possible.

**COMPLETE OVERHAUL, 3/9/11**
I have edited these instructions to simplify. Rooting before installing a custom ROM is NOT necessary on the g-tab as long as you can get ClockworkMod working.

HOW TO: Root, Install ClockworkMod, Load a Custom ROM, Fix the Market, and Add Flash

1. install ClockworkMod Recovery with the instructions in posts #34(internal SD card) or #35(external SD card) of this thread. There is more info here if you need it.
2. choose a ROM from the thread here. Make sure to do your reading on them, as there are benefits and issues with each.
3. download your ROM of choice to your desktop/laptop.
4. if the file is in .RAR format, you will need to extract it on your computer (resulting in an Update.zip and Recovery folder). if it is a .ZIP file, it usually does not need to be renamed or extracted. (ROMs using .zip files can actually be downloaded straight to your tablet, forgoing the need for steps 5 & 6)
5. connect your gTab to your computer, turn on usb storage, and move the update.zip or ROMname.zip to the internal memory. you may put them in any folder you want (except the root) since you are using ClockworkMod. I prefer using the "Android" folder as it is easy to find.
6. turn off USB storage, disconnect from your computer, and power down the gTab
7. hold the volume + button and the power button to boot into ClockworkMod recovery. you can let go when you get past the white viewsonic bootscreen.
8. use the volume rocker to move up/down in the menu and select "backup and restore" with the home button. once in the menu, select "backup". this will create a copy of your current ROM to fall back on should any issues arise in the future. it will take 5-10 minutes.
9. when you are returned to the main menu, select "wipe data/factory reset" and then scroll down to yes.
10. next, select "wipe cache partition", scroll down and select yes.
11. now choose "install zip from sdcard" -> "choose zip from sdcard" and scroll through the list until you find the folder containing the update.zip or ROMname.zip you saved in step 5. (If you downloaded the file directly to your tablet, it will be located in the "download" folder.) once you find it, select the .zip file and scroll down to yes.
12. your new ROM should now install, it will root your tablet in the process. when it is finished, return to the main menu and select "reboot now". you will know it has worked as soon as it reboots because your bootscreen/homescreen will be different and you will now have a SuperUser icon in your app drawer.
13. go here and follow the intructions to fix the android market. (the stuff you need is 3:30 in if you want to start there)
14. go here and download the Adobe Flash update. since it is an apk file, you will also need to download Astro File Manager and use these instructions to install.
15. ENJOY! (and click thanks. :p)
I got as far as step 1 (external SD) and now the g-tab has been stuck for some time at the bird screen with the "Booting recovery Kernel image" at the upper left corner. What can I do?

So your Micro SD card has the 2 following files. Update.zip and Recovery folder?

It should work. Have you tried using your internal memory instead of a micro sd card? I find that more reliable method.

I can't even get there. I'm stuck on the bird page with that message (Booting recovery kernel image) in the upper left corner.

Prior to trying to root, you were able to boot up? And after you tried installing clockwork, that's when the problem started?

If you are booting up without holding the volume up button and the booting recovery kernel image is still being shown, you might have been on firmware 4349 or 3991. I can't really be for sure.

You can try two methods to get back to the original unlocked bootloader

Option 1

http://androidforums.com/viewsonic-gtablet/318377-attention-stock-users-future-owners-read.html

And option 2 (last resort)

You can NVflash back to the original firmware/bootloader and then you can start again with the root process.

http://androidforums.com/gtablet-support-troubleshooting/253801-nv-flash-full-factory-reset.html

IMO, I think every Gtab owner should have NVflash setup on their PCs. It's a very important tool. So if option 1 works for you , I would suggest to at least read the NVflash process and set it up on your PC.

If you need help on either of these two fixes, let me know. Especially NVflash since the instructions seem difficult but in reality it's really not.

Hope everything goes well.

Ok, went through the option #1 and when that didn't work I did the last resort option. Everything proceeded through all the steps and ended with a list of functions in the upper left corner. I selected reboot from the options and it powered off and I can't get it to power on. I tried just the power button and then powers & +volume but no power. I reran the NVflash again with the same results. I think beginning to panic, now.

What reboot option? It should have rebooted by itself if you nvflashed? Nvflash is ran through your computer. So I'm a little confused. Power button and volume plus is not used with the nvflash method. So I think you are looking at clockwork.

Are you seeing the image above? Do you see clockwork as the recovery?

Don't panic. This tab is very very hard to brick. Did you view the video that was in the nvflash thread? That'll show you how nvflash is supposed to look.

Ok. I finally got my G-Tab back to factory (sort of),but at least I can boot up. can you recommend a ROM? I would like to be able to download apps that I have on my phone, sync with my google calendar, yahoo mail, etc.
Buy the way, thank for taking the time to read my problems and helping me out.

Dude, I'm just glad you got everything squared away. My ROM of choice is Vegan 5.1 which is the froyo version of Vegan then there's the Vegan Gingerbread version which is a little less stable (but not by much) than the froyo version.

OK, so like a lot of wooters, my gtab should be here tomorrow. I have a lot of experience with the Droid X but this is my first tab. Been looking a lot at Vegan and I am pretty sure it is where I want to go, but I must ask, should I go 5.1.1 or 7. I love the way 7 looks but I have 3 little girls that are going to want to watch movies on it and I hear that 7 can't play movies. If that is right should I just stick with 5.1.1 or will something like RockPlayer play the movies on 7? If I go with 5.1.1 can I still use the OC'ed kernels?

I am running Vegan 5.1.1. + supplement + pershoots 1.4ghz OC kernel. It runs great but there are a few known bugs.

I wanted to run Vegan 7, but I mostly use this for video so until thats fixed I will deal with 5.1.1 where video playback is perfect.

You could take a look at the latest CM7 builds, too, which will be similar to Vegan Ginger ... and they have some hardware acceleration built in.

But yes, the new kernels should work with Vegan 5.1.1. Be careful when downloading, because there are different Froyo and Ginger versions of those kernels ... and with Clemsyn's, there are different voltage levels, as well. Depending on your specific gTab, the low-voltage ones may not be enough to boot the tablet, so you'll have to experiment.
