Root [HOW TO]: Root, Install a Custom ROM, Fix the Market, and Add Flash

Hm.

Tried it on the other laptop--that update zip is a folder. Is it supposed to be a folder?

Man...we're delving into the really stupid here. Sorry. :D

Hi cray

No that's VS market. The real android market is white and has an green android on the icon. If nothing has changed, this might help. It shows you how to update your gtablet using the stock recovery. Usually the problem is caused by the update zip is placed in the wrong place or its named wrong.

[FAQ] Flashing UPDATE.ZIP the old fashioned way (How and Did It Work?) - xda-developers

It was totally operator error--I was using the 'Classic' view, and Market did not show up there. It does show up on the dashboard view.

I do not get an error when following the directions and re-opening Market (but at least it appears to be the real market).

1) Can someone go through exactly how to force stop so I know I'm doing it right? Do I need to go back to the home screen, then Settings, etc.? Or is there a way to go from Market right into Settings to Force Stop?

2) Do I need to set up the Market account first (with my gMail account, etc.?) Right now I haven't, and it's just asking me to set up the account when I open it.

Thanks again.

Yes, you have to set up your Google account. After that, let it sync.

Go to the Market and accept the terms and agreement. Let the market start up as normal. Make sure it works.

Your settings are probably different from mine because you're using the stock interface but you'll need to go to the settings and try to navigate to your applications. In my settings its under...Settings>Applications>Manage Applications.
Once you find the Market app and Google Framework in there, you'll see the clear cache and force stop buttons.

Then you can perform the market fix.

Okay...just to follow up--it was what we call in my line of work, "Me being an idiot".

I got Market, Maps, etc. Very cool.

In Market--the first thing I see is, "No related apps" or something like that, but when I search, there are apps in the individual areas. I've read a dozen threads on the subject of not getting the 'right' Market, or Market not recognizing the device correctly and so not seeing all the apps--if I can see apps, should I just call it a win? For example, I searched for "Monopoly" in games, and it says there are no results. I find that hard to believe.

Otherwise, this is completely cool. :)

YAY! I'm glad you got it working but there are so many other apps you won't be able to see if you don't perform the market fix.

Oh man, you were completely right--I did the Market fix again, and they're all there now. Wow.

Awesome. :D

Thanks so much, you guys.

Got my gTab on Wednesday. After work, I brought up your post and got started. Within 2 hours, I had installed clockworkmod, VEGAn, loaded Adobe flash 10 and fixed the Android Market.

Without your post, I never would have attempted any of this.

Thanks a million.

Oh, by the way, I'll be watching for your post on upgrading to Honeycomb!

I followed your instructions exactly, loading VEGAn on a new stock G tab. I know nothing about rooting, ROMs, etc. but am comfortable moving files from one device to another. I was immediately successful. Thank you for making this easy for us newbies!

Same here! I have two DroidX's and my friends were all trying to get me to root them but I was too worried about messing something up so I never did. However, I bought the Gtab as it's a little more portable than my MacbookPro for traveling and doing homework. After realizing it was woefully inadequate at doing what I needed it to I knew I had to root. I was confused at first (I think it was just a matter of getting used to the UI's involved) but after I *saw* what everybody was talking about it was super easy! Thanks so much!! Running VEGAn Tab now. ;)

However, I'm looking for some way to access PDAnet and run a BT DUN. I'm at work right now on my MBP surfing through my DroidX - is there anything I can do now to make that happen by downloading files to my laptop and sideloading? Thanks again!

Also, in my download folder in esfileexplorer it still lists the apk's I downloaded from the market before rooting - can I still use them? Does Launcher Pro and the Flash download still work?

13. go here and follow the intructions to fix the android market. (the stuff you need is 3:30 in if you want to start there)

Ok, this definitely won't work for me. The menu button does not work from the main screen, I have to go into the settings app in order to access the settings for the tab. When I do this it looks just like the stock tnt ui for settings, nothing like what is on the video. What's on the video looks like my DroidX. Any ideas?

MASSIVE UPDATE to the original post today. i tried to eliminate unnecessary steps and simplify as much as possible. no more Z4root, no more "optional" clockworkMod.

Greetings & thanks for all of your work and for sharing.
I bought my Gtab yesterday and began working through the "how to" this afternoon. I successfully made it through Step 12 w/ VEGAn Tab "reboot now." The ROM installation seems to go fine as it says "finished", but it still reboots back to tnt.
ClockworkMod seems to work fine (I tried both externally & internally, and have reload my back up after several attemts).
I did see a section about bootloops and a suggestion there about repartitioning your internal SD card to 2048 and 0 fixes, but do not know how AND I wanted to be sure (as possible) how to proceed.
Any ideas or suggestions are very welcomed, thanks!:)

12. your new ROM should now install, it will root your tablet in the process. when it is finished, return to the main menu and select "reboot now". you will know it has worked as soon as it reboots because your bootscreen/homescreen will be different and you will now have a SuperUser icon in your app drawer.

14. go here and download the Adobe Flash update. since it is an apk file, you will also need to download Astro File Manager and use these instructions to install.
15. ENJOY!!

Ok, a few problems. I followed all of the instructions and I'm up to step twelve. However, my device does not appear to be rooted as titanium backup does not work. It says to make sure the device is rooted and/or install busybox. I tried installing busybox but I got a titanium backup error. Also I do,not have a superuser icon in my application tray. Any ideas on what to look into?

Just saw something recently about a new build number of the G Tab that could not be rooted currently, can't find the post, maybe somebody else knows more about it.

It was referring to builds after 3991, I believe. I'm way before that. 3581, I think.

There are two ROMS built based on stock 3991. Two Taps by Roebeet and Caulkins ROM. Both are rooted but Two taps is on hold because of issues. Both have special instructions on how to load it.

Two taps you have to use a different recovery. Either the stock 3991 recovery or the 3991 CM friendly recovery. Both recovery files are in the Two taps thread. If I were you, I would stay away from this ROM unless you are proficient in nvflashing.

Caulkins ROM 1.1 - Which I heard good things about, you have to wipe data and perform a factory reset. To wipe data, it's recommended you use Caulkins Format all zip. It cleans your gtab very thoroughly. After you run that zip through CM, then load his ROM.

So with that said, if you loaded any of these ROMS without following Roebeets or Caulkins specific instructions, you can have problems like not having a rooted ROM or even worse a semi bricked tablet. Semi-bricked isn't the end of the world but it'll scare the heck out of you if you don't know NVflash.

Hope that helps.

How do I find my build? Thot that I did check & had a lower number, but maybe I looked at the wrong number. Thx

I'm not sure if it's the same for stock Tnt but if you go to settings and about phone, it should tell you your build number.

I don't think any gtablets are on a build higher than 3588 because VS put a hold on the last update 3991. That's the one Roebeet is waiting for.

A bootloop is when your gtablet never gets passed the Viewsonic birds or whatever your boot animation is. So if you get passed that and it boots to where you can see the lockscreen or the homescreen than that's not a bootloop.

So if that's the case to fix that,
boot back into CM recovery,
then go to Advanced
then partition SD card
then choose 2048
then choose 0.
then reboot.

Remember this wipes everything in your internal memory card. So make sure to back up your info on a computer that you don't want to lose forever.

BTW, if you can root the gtab you can totally root your Droid X. If you root your Droid X, you can install Wireless Tethering and you can tether your droid X to your gtab. DUN is not supported by any of the gtab ROMS that I know of so Wireless tethering is our only option.

I tether from my Droid 1 all the time with the gtab.

Thanks- tho I'm not sure that I understand - when I initiate the reboot, I get the ViewSonic birds, followed by the g tab logo, then it loads tnt fresh (asking for time, date, etc). So maybe its not a loop, but some other issue?

Oh so you don't have a custom ROM or a custom recovery. CM is a custom recovery tool. When you boot into recovery by pressing the power button and the volume + (up) button simultaneously it'll take you to a screen like this

Edit: On your previous post you said you successfully installed Vegan and CM but did you see the Vegan tab bootanimation? If you didn't then you did not install Vegan.

Thx for the continued help ... sorry for the confusion ... I was able to install CWM, boot to it, backup, wipe data & cache, even got to step 11, "install zip from sdcard", installed from Vegan.zip, watched it load, then got to the part of rebooting, but, when it rebooted, I was back the birdies, g-tab, & tap n tap .... no Vegan tab bootanimation : ( I've even tried wiping data/factor reset 4x + wiping cache 4x before installing Vegan.zip & the reboot. Thanks.

Are you sure you downloaded the right Vegan file? how many MB is your Vegan file? Are you sure you didn't just download the supplement (5.1.1) Sorry to ask, I hope I don't offend you.
