Root [HOW TO]: Root, Install a Custom ROM, Fix the Market, and Add Flash

I didn't have any problems flashing VEGAn, however when I try to open the market, it just flashes and returns to the menu. I have flashed it twice and have the same results. I haven't found anyone with the same problem. Any ideas to fix this.

Hi.

I know you said that you flashed vegan twice but did you perform a wipe data/factory and cleared the cache prior to reinstalling your rom. If you haven't or have, I would do that. I actually perform a wipe data 3 times prior to installing a rom. Or I would redownload the rom rather than using the same file.

Hope everything goes well.

Greetings,

Glad I found this community. Got my gTab a couple of days ago. Rooted, flashed Vegan and applied the market fix to get everything working. All is great with one exception. I cannot get titanium backup to work because it does not see my device as rooted (I know it is!). Tried all the suggested fixes (install/update busybox and superuser), but still no dice. Is there a known fix to this issue? Or are there any backup alternatives to titanium that are not as finicky?

Thank you in advance.

I'm trying to fix android market problem as per instructional video you directed us to. Unfortunately, when I switch back to the main screen after running Android Market it must automatically close the program because it does not show up as a running service and I am unable to continue with the rest of the steps. I am running TNT lite that you packaged. Ideas? Never mind. Found it all in different place. Fixed it. Thanks.

I did the clear and wipe before any flashing each time. I went ahead and tried doing it 3 times and then loaded VEGAn and now it just sits on a blank screen during boot up. After flashing CM7 I no longer get the Viewsonic screen.

To Calsnook or to anyone that wants to flash Clockwork Recovery without using a SD card.

Looks like you are having trouble loading Clockwork.

Try this to simplify things.

Don't use a SD card. Take it out of the gtablet.

  • Download the file below to your PC. It's a zip file for Clockwork mod.
  • Use Winzip to extract the two files. It should be an update.zip and a recovery folder.
  • Take those two files and side load them to your gtablet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=478613&d=1293950847

  • After that, turn off your gtablet.
  • Then press and hold the power button and the Volume+. Keep holding it until you see the viewsonic birds.
  • Then it should install ClockworkMod.
Let me know how it goes.

Stupid question. What does it mean to side load files to the gtablet?

Hmm so I'm supposed to replace the update.zip file on my tablet with the one in the download?
That's a little suspicious - the update.zip in the download is 4 MB whereas the one on my tablet is 120 MB

That is correct, don't worry about the file size. You will be deleting it altogether after you load the new ROM anyway.

The 120 mb zip is probably a rom. If you want, move that 120mb update zip to your computer if you want to keep it for backup purposes. I'm guessig that 120mb file is the update that viewsonic pushed out.

well, somebody had to make the first post! i have already put this info in the general tablet forum, but there are new ROMs out there and i know this is the first thread any g-tab owner will be looking for.

Solid Orange, I've been poking around on my Woot gTab for a few days and I'd like to keep the stock TNT. Any advice on installing/fixing Market without flashing a ROM?

I've seen threads (most on xda) on just this subject, but they all end with something like 'this thread is old' and a link to a new thread, then the linked thread spirals into what looks like a dozen "this doesn't work" replies. And all those appear to be a few months old anyway, which seems like years in gTab-time.

You seem to have your act together (and you seem to speak good newb), so I thought I'd ask--can I get Market, etc., while keeping the stock TNT (at least at first), and if so, can you recommend a procedure (or a thread)?

Thanks!

Installing the stock enhancement pack would definitely be the easiest way.

Oh excellent, that looks like what I'm looking for.

Uh, can you translate the directions?

2) Extract the downloaded rar to /sdcard. Your sdcard should contain: /sdcard/update.zip and /sdcard/recovery/command. (NOT SDCARD2 aka your external sdcard)
'Extract'? The download just got me one file with a .rar extension. Where do I get the update.zip, and what's the second thing? A folder? A file?

At least I know the difference between the internal and external SD cards. :o

3) Force close Google Services Framework, then Force Close Market
How do you 'force close'?

4) Go back to Google Services Framework, then clear data
Um...don't know what 'clear data' means, either.

Those are pretty simplistic. Darn.

to extract, you will need WinRAR. it can be found here:
Download

once you have installed that on your computer, right click the .rar file, and "extract with WinRAR" should be an option. extracting the file will give you your update.zip and recovery folder.

to force close, open your application settings, choose "system applications", find "google services framework" and it should give you the option to force close. the option to clear data should also be in there, but make sure that you have force closed both the framework AND the market before you do it.

let us know if you need anymore help!

Okay, apparently I lied, and I don't know the file structure setup. :o:o

My gTab is showing up as F: in Windows Explorer, adn there is no folder under F: called 'sdcard'. There is already an update.zip and a recovery folder (amongst others).

Is F: the 'sdcard' directory, and should I delete the existing recovery folder and update.zip files and replace them with the downloaded ones, or...?

If you can see the original update.zip/recovery folder, you are in the right place. Just replace those 2 files with the new ones you extracted.

Okay, I did that, and got through all the steps through 'Run Market and confirm you get an error'.

I do not get an error.

Questions:

1) Is 'Market' the icon called gMarket on my Classic Home screen? Looks like a shopping bag with a 'g' on it? Or is that ViewSonic's Market?

1)a) If that's VS's market--I don't see another one.

2) When I open then force close Market, all I did was open the Market, push the home screen hard button, then the 'settings' soft button, then find and force close, clear data, etc. Did I do that right? I was worried going to the home screen first might have messed something up.

3) After the update, everything looks the same. Should it? There a link in the xda thread about nothing changing...I just don't know what should change. And my recovery folder had a command file in it.

Confused...

Hi cray

No that's VS market. The real android market is white and has an green android on the icon. If nothing has changed, this might help. It shows you how to update your gtablet using the stock recovery. Usually the problem is caused by the update zip is placed in the wrong place or its named wrong.

Yeah! I was looking at that thread, thanks!

Mine did the 'script' on bootup, and cardboard box thing, and it *seemed* to update. Would the new Market icon just be on the Classic View page? I looked through the other home pages and really don't see anything different.

My command file seems identical to the command file in the thread, and I dropped in a new update.zip file. The only thing different appears to be that mine are associated with WinRAR, if that matters...

Should I just try it again? I feel like this is a simple operator error issue and I'm just missing the obvious thing...

So you have your update.zip and recovery folder in your internal memory . You kept the command file in the recovery folder right? Also make sure your update.zip isn't name update.zip.zip. That's a common mistake people do.

I copied deleted the recovery folder and update file in the gTab's internal memory, and copied and pasted the above folder and file in their places. That folder and file I extracted from the download int he thread above. I did the power cycle with volume + and the gTab definitely seemed to go through the update process...

Hm. I think I'll just repeat the process. It must be operator error at some point--my command file looks just like the one in the thread you referenced, the, I left it in the recovery folder, I can't tell about the update.zip (there's no extension on it, and WinRAR has associated itself with all .zips now), but it looked like the one that was already on the gTab.

Yes, I'll just start from scratch and try again.
