Root How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More

Yeah that's true. But I feel I will spend the next month flashing the modaco and villain releases all the time until things settle down a bit :P If you want to be able to pick a ROM and stick with it, confident that you have the best version, this is definitely not the time :)

jUsT2eXy, thanks for adding that bit to your guide :)

No probs mate... sorry it too ka while.. I don't get much time to log on these days.. but now that uni exams are over I will be more active.

thanks again

II now have villain 10.
I'm impressed, fast and neat.

All my contacts came back, however I did lose my astrid to do list.
that was a bit annoying

Now I've done it once I'm not so afraid to do it again in the future, but for the medium term I think I'll stick with villain.

I expect to making a donation at the end of the month.

DOWNLOAD THE INSTANT ROOT APK
http://neilandtheresa.co.uk/Android/InstantRoot.apk

Note: Some people have said that the file downloads as a .zip file. It did not for me, but downloaded as a .apk file... So if yours does downlaod as a zip file, rename the whole file as InstantRoot.apk

Safe & Easy.

1)Download it.
2)Save it to your SD Card ROOT (not in any folders)
3)Open up a file manager on your phone (Download ASTRO File Manager from the marketplace..if you don't have a file manager..)
4)Find the 'InstantRoot.apk' file.
5)Run it.
6)It will say it's been successful

Voila. Your done.

1. Will this work for 2.1 firmware + 2.27.651.6 software? Any luck?
2. When you say download it, do you mean via my computer connected to my phone or directly from my phone/s web browser?

This seems very simple but I am just a bit unsure about that one step.

If you have 2.27.651.6 on your phone then you're in the wrong forum; Sprint heroes have their own forum.

I would move it over to there for you, but I know what they'll say. Currently there is no known way to root the sprint 2.1 update.

Yeah, I realized there was one just for Sprint Hero's not too long after posting... whoops!

Hi guys...

I am complete noob to rooting and flashing custom roms but ive decided to give it a go.

Problem is i've been following this guide

http://androidforums.com/all-things...nstall-custom-rom-backup-more.html#post454660

and i seem to have a problem with instantroot.apk:

Firstly the site seems to be down:
http://neilandtheresa.co.uk/Android/InstantRoot.apk returns
"Not Found"
I found the apk via a google search and by downloading from uploading.com. I put it on the root of the sd card, installed it using Astro and when I try to launch it says

"Activity not found - uk.co.neilandtherea.IntantRoot2"

Now titanium backup is giving errors leading me to believe that its not rooted properly
(Titanium bacckup says ...Whoami reports: "whoami:unkonwn id of 10114")

Any help?
Thanks all

I thought I broke my phone, but I've managed to rescue it I think.

Here's what I did.

I've recently flashed villain rom 10. Love it. But my sdcard (2gb) is a little small. so i buy a new one off ebay (8gb).

not quite sure how to go about doing it, but I try just turning off phone and switching the cards around.

new card doesn't work/phone doesn't work/oh dear

i then turn off phone again and think, well if i switch back the cards then everything should go back to how it was.

no

NO it doesn't, the old 2gb card isn't working now. I spent a day deleting files and putting them back on, using mybackup and titanium backup and I'm finally nearly there. Just need to download and reflash villain and everything should be hunky dory.

I still have a question. How can I swap over sdcards properly. Thanks

Pete

This is my first post, please forgive/redirect me if I've put it in the wrong place.

I followed jUsT2eXy's excellent guide to rooting my HTC Hero on orange UK, thanks for such a well written set of steps. I am now running VillainROM7.0.0, but did not flash the radio because of the warning of compatibility issues with Orange UK.

The problem I have is that I can't set up my Facebook account on the phone, either when I do the initial set up or by going to menu, accounts & sync. With both the facebook icon lights when I tap it but nothing else happens.

Can anyone help?

You say you're running Villain 7, but it's actually called Villain 10. (It's their 7th ROM that uses the over the air updater, hence it refering to it being 7).

If you look there are number of patches for Villain 10, one of which fixes the facebook sync.

Hi Mate:

I am from Singapore with the following data:

HTC Hero

Firmware: 1.5

Baseband: 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18

Build no: 2.73.707.9

I cant find anything that can be done.

I had tried to create a gold card but wheneven I try to download new ROM of 1.76..405.1 I will get bootloader error.

Please advice is there any way to root my Hero?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, everything running like a dream now with the new 10.2 villain ROM

I proceed after this error...
Titanium Backup gave error on root access, but since i didnt want any backup, i proceeded..

Turned out to work perfectly, and i am already using the new room...

Would like to knoe how though, cause from the message on instant root and titanium, i did not even get to root the phone :P

@neacy69, who had the same problem, maybe you could try as well...

Just running instantroot isn't sufficient to get titanium working, it would seem. Probably something to do with Busybox + SU Permissions.

Luckily you don't actually need root access to switch ROMs.

So... resuming the story, you dont need to root in order to update the rom?
that's messed up :p

actually, i think that even the villain rom that i am using now dont have root access.. cause when i tried to use an app (aNetShare) it said it wasnt rooted :P

I'm stuck on the first step in this guide, InstantRoot, and get the error message: "java.util.zip.ZipException: expected End Of Central Directory signature".
Been reading the different replies in this thread, and can't really come up with a solution... Do I need to use the GoldCard-method and downgrade? If that's the case I might aswell wait for the real upgrades, if it actually is released at the end of the month :p

Cheers;
Gee.

Also, I've found an alternative but it appears the app isn't working on Hero 2.1

You're trying to root the official 2.1 firmware? Most of the old 1.5 techniques are unlikely to work on the new firmware.

Give it a week or two and somebody will have a new method, I'm sure :)

If I might try to clarify what the problems with the InstantRoot from the "neiland..." site may be:

1) no internet access - I always ensure that I use a Wi-Fi link connection for this, as I'm playing with an unsubscribed Orange PAYG SIM.
2) site down or under heavy load, causing timeouts.
3) the "application installation" seems to require a 2nd stage whereby it accesses the "home" site for a 2nd part - code, data, I don't know.
4) anything that causes a ZIP extraction error/exception means the original ZIP isn't correct. Download again, replace and retry.

HTTH

As a comment on my personal exploits with an Orange 1.5 branded Hero:

Environment: unlocked Orange HTC Hero, 8GB microSD card, Unsubscribed Orange PAYG SIM (i.e. no Mobile Internet, calls etc.), 3 personal Wi-Fi LAN routers (2 bridged, Buffalo Tech WZR-RS-G54 with 1 cable modem, 1 Huwei ? ADSL router/modem), all Internet connected, using 128-bit WEP or WPA-PSK encryption keys.

Down-flashed to Orange-specific build 2.73.61.5 from the HTC support site.
Instant-rooted as per script.
FlashRec 1.6.2 installed as per script.
Apps installed (Astro File Manager, Titanium Backup, etc.)
Did the Titanium Backup, hit the "Problems?" button, thing to get BusyBox installed.
Backups taken and copied off SDcard to laptop (N.B. this includes various reboot/power-on types).
VillainROM 5.5 flashed.

Seemed to be mostly OK, except I lost the access to the new, white background MarketPlace, for one thing (Oops!). Left it for a while as I'd other things to do.

Currently experimenting with VillainROM 12.0, but I'm not entirely happy with the changed response to the Unsubscribed SIM etc.

It seems i'm running a software version of 3.32.405.1.

I cant find anything at all to do with this version throughout this forum, so am wondering if I am able use the Villian ROM with this software. I am experiencing TERRIBLE battery problems at the moment, going through 2 batteries in about 9 hours, so am desperate to get this sorted. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a noob, and am dependant on the step by step guides to get it sorted!

I have the same software version as you and currently running villain 12

I have battery problems although not as severe as yours. I'm currently getting 16 hours but am playing with different things to try and increase battery time.

Try turning off mobile network and see if you can get increased battery time.

I'm not suggesting that you turn off mobile network as a solution (half the purpose of these smart phones is that you can access the internet anywhere) but more of a diagnosis. If it is mobile network that is draining the battery it could be that you do not have the best radio installed or that various applications are syncing more frequently than necessary.

Let us know how you get on.

Hey. Thanks for the tip mate. Spent the day only turning on mobile network when I wanted to go online, and have noticed a significant improvement in battery life, but, like you said, it's not the best solution, but at least i've managed to work out what the problem is. It seems the mobile network has a massive effect on the battery life, as even short term use had quite an impact on the battery life.

You mention the radio....... now this is something that I will probably never use, as I generally never listen to the radio at all. What settings can I adjust to prevent this from running at all?

I'm still swaying towards the idea of running the Villian ROM, even though you mention your troubles with the battery, as 16 hours would be a lot better than what I am currently getting. I have all my syncs down to a minimum, so am still concerned as to why I'm getting such rubbish battery life. It's odd, as my phone was running fine, but then about a week or so before I received the 2.1 upgrade, it suddenly started draining the battery at a ridiculous rate, which I find quite confusing!?!
