Hi i'm on three uk network latest official rom on three uk which prevents me from rooting. I have done the gold card downgrade and get stuck on what i see is the most stupidist part.

The part where I'm stuck is when i insert my gold card and wait until htc syc is on and connected and goto install the 2.73.405.5 RUU rom.

The actual problem is this. I connected to HTC sync and so i fire ahead and install the 2.73.405.5 RUU but then it disconnects from htc sync and when 2.73.405.5 RUU is about too talk to my htc is can't find it.

Any ideas lads before i launch this out of the windows :)

Sorted it lads it was windows 7 causing it
 
Hi all - I've just installed an app called ROM manager by Clockworkmod from the Market. I'm still playing but it seems to be a pretty useful application forall you rooters and flashers!!!
 
Thanks for the guide. Seems good for me, everything from downgrading my orange rom, backing everything up, installing villian.

I had a couple of issues, like when i first installed titanium it claims i didnt have root access, just had to click the problems tab - no problem.

i had an error thrown up, "su request wants to run /system/bin/sh" or something like that, not really sure what that was all about but doesnt seem to be affecting me adversely.

So thanks for the guide, very useful.

If anyone has any really simple questions they are scared to ask more established contributors, feel free to direct them at me - i have little android knowledge but would like to contribute in some way.
 
okay can someone tell me if rooting your phone is very dangerous? just as ive heard afew things that it cannot be unrooted?

i really wanna try one of these roms, they look real good.

okay these instructions are really confusing to me now..

okay here is where iam up to...ive installed all the programs correctly etc...now iam not sure if ive flashed the recovery image right...i opened it up but never put anything in address bar but i pressed create image etc and it done it and placed 2 files on sd card..both say they have bites in em but none will open? is this normal as iam confused. its labelled as you said thoe. also when you say flash what do you mean? never done that either i just pressed the option that i needed to create a recovery image.

now i rebooted phone and turned it on using the home + power buttom and it first gave me the caution icon with a phone next to it...the only options available for me is: reboot system now,, or apply sdcard update or wipe factory settings and down below on the screen is says E: cant open/cache/recovery/command!!!

iam so lost!!! can i go back at all, cus i dont wanna mess up if iam way off point guys.

pleaseeeeee someone help me. phone seems to be working fine apart from all this. i just want that custom rom

I'm working towards rooting and villian-ing (?) but am reading through all the issues first. Question - I've got a sh1tty old, slow laptop with win95 and a macbook. Naturally I want to use the faster mac - how much of the process do I absolutely have to use a pc for and how much can I do on a mac?

The problem i seem to have is i'm already rooted from a previous 1.5 rom. When i try to use flashrec it wont backup my recovery and don't allow me to flash recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img. I want to follow the guide but its stopping me in my tracks there. I can get to a boot menu from the build but its missing some stuff like dalvik cache. Should i go ahead with out it or will i need to install instant root override my previous root.

I had the very same thing. I was rooted on my 1.5, ran the flashrec and wasn't being asked to FLASH. I re-did it twice and on the third attempt it did it. I can only think I had typed something incorrectly. I can only suggest that if its not allowing the button that says "flash recovery image", then you've done something wrong.It worked for me in the end.

This is my phone's current status.

Problem is that i am actually stuck at the very first part of the rooting proces.

If i install instantroot it says "program installed" i press finish select instantroot in astro and press "launch" but then i get a message that i have not seen anyone else get.

Activity not Found - uk.co.neilandtheresa.InstantRoot.2

If i try to run programs requiring root it tells me that i dont have root and if i try running titanium backup it first told me that i did not have root and pressing problems it installed the busybox but this just changed the error message to the "whoami" message.

Testing root with herokey application gives me a "Error - Check if you have root privileges".

Do i need to downgrade ?

If all i really want to preserve is what is on the memory card and my contacts list and i have a gmail account linked to this phone am i then right in thinking that i need no backup's before downgrading as it will not touch the card and the contacts will be on gmail account ?

PS. Are the custom roms including languages ?? Right now my 1.5 hero "speaks" Danish and if possible i would like to keep it this way....Possible / Impossible with custom roms ?

I have just installed the villain 5.4 rom & the latest radio rom. but i can only get access to the gprs network, no others :S

any ideas as to what i can do?

im on the orange network
 
Need Help!! Trying to get back to factory 1.56 and getting a #170 USB Connection error. I wiped my sd card in error I can not get past the second screen???
 
Hm... So I rooted my Hero, installed VillianROM 5.4, didn't like it, and reflashed back to the default ROM. Does anyone know why I keep losing the Recovery-Image? Like, I reflashed it... but when I want to use it a few hours later, it just boots into this weird exclamation-triangle picture

By going back it means you need to start the process from the beginning. You have flashed over your recovery image (oops)
 
I think I'm about to give up.

Can't seem to get much to work. Have a sim free Hero.
- InstantRoot seemed to work.
- flashrec doesn't do seem to do anything
- Titanium Backup creates 6 files all 1kb. Is that correct?
- Nandroid doesn't work. Just Phone and warning picture.

Is it worth trying anything else?

Also, what do these things do? flashrec, titanium backup and nandroid
sound like the same thing.

Can I just try to flash the new ROM? Would I only lose my Apps, or something
worse?

When I got the screen with the triangle and exclamation mark in it, it was because flashrec hadn't worked
 
I saw a post in the forums which directed me here. I am in South Africa and the local agents have informed me that we will probably not see Android 2.1 for the Hero here as they want to sell their new phones. On my gsm HTC Hero, the build number is 2.73.1104.4 146733. The phone is running Android 1.5.
Could someone please advise me as to which method I would need to employ in order to root and install a custom rom on my phone.

Everything you need to know, where to find the files etc, is all on the very first page of this thread, all posted by just2sexy.
Seems complicated but read it through before rooting and installing a new rom.
2.1 is a big improvement on 1.5, but there are a few glitches here and there
 
hey, i also have a similar problem, and a couple of questions.

ok,first, i want to install a navigation software which requires root access. do i need a custom rom for a root access or no? i installed instantroot.apk, and since i forgot what it said for the first time, i tried reinstalling it, astro says "successful", and in the notification bar, it says "root access is already available"

my build number is 2.73.405.5, european version hero.

i just tried hero key app (this requires root access) and upon starting, it said to check my rooting privileges. it seems that i don't have root access.

i'm quoting your original post:
"To verify you have rooted your phone, go to the market, search root, read the app description and make sure it says 'requires root access'. Download it, run it. If it runs/works you have rooted your phone. If it does not work you have not rooted your phone."

the last sentence - what to do if rooting is unsuccessful? is there any other easy-way of rooting, similar to the use of instantroot.apk?

to sumarise - i just need that gps app, do i need a custom rom to run it, or i can use it with factory rom (my build number)?
 
Hi,

I tried to run the update.zip in the recovery mode but it aborted saying 'No Signature' can you please guide what that mean? or where the problem lies?
