Root How To Root + Install Froyo On An HTC Desire

Thank-you for info but i did that just before I posted. Thank god for Google lol. Always save to Google. But I have lost all my music apps pics etc. Oh well least I still have my contacts. Oh and android worked. Thanks. P.s I hate the new keyboard, it has the en on bottom left corner instead of the down arrow which I always used . Anyway of changing this?

You need to install another keyboard.

I personally love SwiftKey. I believe that there are keyboards similar to the Sense one in the market, but I've never tried them, so I can't recommend any.

Can anyone help with the Orange branding thing? I am on Orange but have debranded and also unlocked the phone so that the recent wifi problem got sorted. Do you think I will be OK to try to do the 2.2 upgrade (nice guide by the way) or is it the radio update that will not work with the Orange network. My knowledge is thin on this subject.

Also, the App2SD thing above. Will I have to format the whole card to ext3 or just a portion that I can use with the app? Is there a simple way to reformat without screwing the data or is it better to just backup to PC and then wipe the lot?

Thanks in advance. Keen to try this but not if it is going to potentially brick the phone

I had to install some extra drivers that I found online, I'm uploading them to multiupload as I type this, i'll edit this post with the link unless you reply before it's done :)

EDIT: here it is,
Code:
[URL="http://www.multiupload.com/CKH3MG34MH"]http://www.multiupload.com/CKH3MG34MH
[/URL]

To install it I put the folder to the desktop, then went into control panel and then Devices and Printer, I found Android 1.0 (may be called different on yours - im not sure) then went into properties and then update hardware (if its unavailable keep looking until you find it within an extra option) and then I chose to manually install drivers and I pointed it to that folder :)

Cheers Kevin

These drivers dont update and it says they're the same as those that are downloaded from the hboot update. Still no further forward

Mate seriously look at my link about linux, its simple and easy, all it requires is you burning the image you downloaded on to a cd and then leave cd in pc and restart, it will then boot from cd. It doeant effect your pc in any way.

how do I get apps2sd on? do I have to download something? also I notice the keyboard a little slower

iits fine I downloaded it from market lol. but what's different with this and the plus?

Why can't I install a2sd for, it downloads but won't install, Unknown Error -18?

Other apps install fine, anyone got the .apk for it?

Yea i would like a2sd+ as apps 2 SD from market doesn't help, when I click on the app e.g. Rom manager and click move to card it just says unable to move

Thanks Jimmy.

Worked perfectly, followed guide to the letter.
On a MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) to a Outright Purchased HTC Desire.

is apps 2 sd working for anyone? it is doing my head in, i read somewhere that rom manager does not like foroyo 2.2, hence why it does it in ext 2 or something and our rom recognises ext 3 only. problem i get is, i cant move files to card, everytime i click move to card it says unable to move to card. i have partitioned it also causing me to format card and then it stalls, having to reboot and reinstall the rom. how have people done it? tell us the secret lol.

Ok, I've updated the guide a little.

Windows users need to have HTC Sync installed, for some drivers. Mac and Linux users are fine without.

I've also expanded the section on backing up a little, to include MyBackup Pro.

Finally, I've added a restoration section that I stupidly forgot to include.

I still have no clue as to how Orange users can do this, so if anyone has any information, it would be much appreciated if you'd share it :)

Ok, updated again.

AdamG has updated his ROM to fix a couple of issues. You can flash the update if you want, but it's not required, and I probably won't for a while.

If you do want to, the link is in the guide.

What update? I am using 1.0c from his xda topic, that's the Rom I used.. unless you are on about something else?

He updated it. The new version fixes a WiFi issue. I'm not 100% sure what the issue was though...

Put the file in say Documents, then open Documents as root (right click, open as root), this should make the folder red and everything in it root, then run the file from there.

Thanks, the root thing always confuses me on ubuntu because it seems to be hidden. If anyone else uses this method to root using ubuntu, place the extracted unrevoked file (called reflash) in your home directory, open a terminal window and type sudo ~/reflash

I'm now rooted WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Hi guys, I'm getting an error at the end when im trying to install or flash the rom.I can install the radio image without a problem but when i try to install ( or flash ) the rom it gives an error and aborts the installation.

Odd... Can you provide any more details?

Any photos, etc?

It stars installing the rom then when copying files it gives an error like E: cannot access files or something then aborts the installation. I'll wipe the phone to factory settings and then change the sd card to the original 4 gb and try again. If this doesn't work I dont know what else to do.

all fixed.once i did a wipe/factory restore and changed the sd card it installed the rom without a problem.I was scrared i bricked my phone for a minute :)

./reflash: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

Seems it was compiled for x86...

edit: Installing the lib32-gtk2 package fixed it.
