Root How to Root Nexus 4

I'll take one for the team and test and verify this. I'm at work now, but I'll give it a shot either tonight or first thing in the morning.

As someone who is considering rooting for the first time, I wanted to ask about the dis-advantages of rooting. So far I've got:

1. Voids your warranty
2. An unlocked bootloader exposes you to security risks

What about OTA's. Do you still get them? My concern is that I'll root and install a custom ROM and everything but that I might not keep up with things after that. My main reason for wanting to root is that I need to be able to use my phone as a hot spot but I don't want to pay an extra $15 mo. for it. Secondly, I just like learning new things.

If you try this PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

I am working on rooting my phone right now, but I am unable to get a recovery flashed. There are a couple steps missing from this guide, I will update it to make things simpler after I successfully root.

If you obtain root before me, please PM me and let me know what recovery you flashed.

Godspeed and good luck!

I now have a rooted Nexus 4. I was unable to use the guide in the OP because I couldn't get the recovery to flash properly. I used THIS guide and will personally vouch that it works.

This is more difficult. If you aren't familiar with fastboot and adb I recommend either being very cautious or waiting until an easier method is confirmed working.

Yea....that guide is over my head. I spent hours rooting and customizing my original moto droid, but it has been a few years and I am rusty.

Here's hoping a more nicely (ie easy) packaged program is released for the noobs life myself.

I will be following this closely.

Rooting any nexus device is insanely easy compared to other devices.

If you don't want to do it manually, I would imagine a toolkit like wugs will be able to do it automatically very soon

My last phone was the Evo 3D. Now that thing was a pain. To root you had to go into fastboot and get an identification token off your phone, go to an htc website and exchange the token for an unlock code, and then go back into fastbook to finish the root. To unlock the bootloader you literally had to stick a metal wire into the motherboard and ground it to the SD card to bring a transistor low and if your timing wasn't perfect you were stuck in a bootloop.

After doing that I can handle a few console commands.
