Root How to Root Your Droid (For Non-Linux/Non-Geeks)

Is this method still considered the preferred way to gain root access without brick conversion, or is using the super user zipped exploit a better way?

Also, by rooting the Droid, do you lose the ability to receive automatic updates? I personally think the Droid has been a huge disappointment, so I'm looking for things to do to make it a little more interesting before I dump it and buy another phone that actually works.

Thanks!

Is there any reason why I can SU from a terminal and get "access granted courtesy of magicandroidapps.com"

Yet all apps I run tell me I don't have root access? It's like I have root at the terminal but not through GUI apps? Wasup with that?

NEVERMIND, PROBLEM SOLVED.

Apparently the latest droid root technique works. For some reason the original technique (posted above) didn't seem to work. This is what worked for me...

Motorola Droid Rooted: How To Root Your Droid And Change Visual Theme Or Use Restricted Apps | areacellphone.com

Much simpler too. No adb stuff.

I did this and it was way easy. Too easy? This should be the method for non-linux geeks.

I'm sorry I have to ask this but I cant find the answer so I was hoping someone could answer it without burning me too much. Is there a way to practice this without actually doing it to my phone? Cant imagine theres a way but if there is I'd love to know.

I am just wondering people keep talking about a superuser app on their phone and I do not seem to have that. I rooted my phone with the OP's method and I all I have tried so far is a screen capture app and that worked fine so I am assuming that it is rooted.

Just wondering; with all the similaraties of the droid eris and the motorola droid would this rooting work alongside with the Eris or do I just risk killin' it or wasting my time? Thanks and sorry for the newbie question; new to Droid and I wanna get mine rooted already. :)

Ahem. Need a bit o' the expert help here.

Downloaded all of the various files after wading thru the corrections. Unzipped to c:\android. Changed the filename to update.zip, put it into recovery mode and get it to slurp up the 'update' file. Up to here, it's good.

yes, I installed the usb driver.

When I give it 'adb push su /data/local' I get "error: device not found" Any adb commands give me the same error. I have rebooted several times. Both devices.

HALP!

try this site:

Obtaining Root - Root Your Droid

it's much easier :)

Does rooting your Droid allow you to save Apps from the marketplace to your SD card instead of using the built in flash memory? One of the reasons I returned my droid is because I was starting to run low on memory for my apps and thought that I'd run out it sooner rather then later...

PS: thanks for suggesting this website Obtaining Root - Root Your Droid
The guy has an awesome step by step guide for everything. Works perfectly for noobs like me. I just created my first back up after rooting =)

Hey, how did you backup your phone? I'm trying to search for guides on how to use Nandroid now that I rooted it, but they're all instructions for the G1 or have way too many steps than necessary.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Edit: Lol, nm, just found this right after I bumped this thread :s. Sorry for the n00bish Q. Thanks anyways, guys, you rock!
