How to Unlock (and Root) the Bell Galaxy S2. Step by Step Guide

Hi,

I have a nandroid backup from when I rooted my phone, but now I want to restore this backup of mine. How do I restore the backup? I am also running Villianrom right now.

Go into CWM recovery mode (VOL-UP+HOME+POWER)
scroll to backup/restore
choose restore
then select the backup you want
reboot

Thanks, worked perfectly.

A couple of quick questions though: I'm planning on selling my phone and would like to restore it to default (out of box) condition, when I do that will I still have the root access AND unlock, or will I have to do one or both again?

Alright. Perfect!

Please add up everything that really is needed to get back to stock bell s2 on the first post... This is the stocks right?? SGS2 Bell/Virgin Canadian Thread Q&A (Root/Unlock/Firmware) Modems KG6/KH3/KI1 - xda-developers

By what i already understood is you can flash everything back by just using ODIN by, flashing the CSC, modem(phone) and kernel(PDA)? so what is the ROM(the one that is in this guide that i ddnt see on the link) for? is it a substitute so i can just skip and not flash the CSC part?

Or just disregard these questions and just make the updates on the first post on How to flashback fully to stock. haha :)

Is this the right sicopat stock rom with rooted kernel you were saying?
[ROM][25/09][2.3.5][XXKI3] SicOpaT's ROM BASE ODEXED + THEMES + MODs - xda-developers

if i do flash this will my yellow triangle disappear?? is KI3 better than KI4?

All of this is slowly and slowly making sense to me... BIG THANKS TO YOU. :D
expect a few more questions! pls bear with me. :D

Ya to get back to stock you need to flash the rom. It has the correct CSC so no need to do that. You may also need to flash the modem back depending on what rom you are on. Finally flash the stock kernel. (I still need to add this to the first post lol)

Flashing Sicopat will give you a rooted phone but it will not get rid of the triangle. You will need to flash a stock kernel afterwards to get rid of it. In the case of KI3 you would need to flash a stock KI3 kernel. I wouldn't as I don't care about the triangle.

KI3 is much better than KI4. I tested both and KI3 is actually newer (2.3.5) and is more responsive and snappy with better battery life.

Hey Blue, I've been following this guide, but when I check in "About phone" is says that I'm still running KH3. I'll expand on what I've done. I download sicopat's zip file to my computer, then load it onto my phone using Kies air. I did put it in the internal sd, but as its own file, not into USBstorage. I then followed the rest of your guide to the letter. Can you tell me what's going wrong?
By the way, I haven't got a clue what to do about the QR code, or how to directly download to my phone. Believe me, I've tried! It always says that the download is unsuccessful or failed because my phone doesn't support the type of file. Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks! :)

Thanks!

Download from the link using your computer not the phone. Connect your phone using a USB cable and copy the zip to the internal sd card. I copied mine to USB Storage. Then you can flash it :)

Hey Blue1K,

I think I rushed and before reading your post I did it ...

- I did not look what type of Kernel I have
- I installed Gingerbread.XWKDD

At Kernel version says :
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513
root@DELL103 #2

When I try the Sim unlock app it says I'm not a superuser ... and nobody can unlock the phone now.

Is it safe to re-install what you're KINDLY giving out in your information ?

Oh ... First time Android user :)

Try flashing your phone to KG2 using odin and my guide. You can use the stock KG2 rom. Then download the CF-root-KG2 kernel in my guide.

Then try unlocking again with unlocking app.

Should work fine that way :)

Thanks, worked perfectly.

A couple of quick questions though: I'm planning on selling my phone and would like to restore it to default (out of box) condition, when I do that will I still have the root access AND unlock, or will I have to do one or both again?

No, if you flash the stock bell rom and kernel (and possibly the modem) you will have a non-rooted stock phone. The sim unlock should be permanent though.

Will this work with the AT&T GS2? I ordered one today, and I know it doesn't have a physical home button, so not sure how to get to download boot at least.

Any ideas?

Found this for you: XDA Root for ATT S2

Flash using odin using only the pda button like in my guide. Don't load the pit file.

OR this guide (looks easier): Root Guide ATT

And I also checked to see if the Helroz Galaxy S unlock app works for ATT model and it does! :)

Good luck!

Hey Blue, still having the same problem. Did what you said, but when I flash Sicopats KI3 rom, it seems to be working, but one of the lines before it asked to reboot says "Can't access to '/system/csc/VMC/system/' " then the last line is "successfully applied multi-CSC." Not sure if this is the problem, but I can't think of anything else. Again, my phone still says it's running 2.3.4 and KH3 .

Thanks! :)

I would download the file again. Seems corrupted.

Just to be sure....you are booting into recovery first and not odin? Then selecting "choose update to flash"?

Also, make sure to do a nandroid backup first. Just in case. You can do this by selecting backup/restore in recovery and selecting backup..

"E signature verification failed" I downloaded the file again, put it on my phone using USB... Now I'm stuck in perpetual recovery mode downloading. It's been going on now for 10 minutes... Please help. What do I do?

Ok, I can help.

Remember home button is select and power is back. volume is scroll (in recovery)

In recovery go to INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD
TOGGLE SIGNATURE VERIFICATION to off. (It was on)
Then CHOOSE ZIP and flash away. :)

Huh. I'm not given the option to toggle signature verification. At least I managed to get my phone to turn on again. So I'm still running KH3. Maybe I should just be happy with that for now... Cause feeling like I was stuck in recovery and possibly had bricked my phone really scared me....

You are rooted right? Before flashing you should do a backup to avoid any Oh sh*t moments ;)
Happened when I got my Nexus One and I almost had aneurysm :(

Do you have a Superuser app listed in your app drawer? If not you can't flash using this method. Need root first to get the custom recovery not the stock one.

If not:

1. Root using odin and my guide
2. Boot into recovery and do a backup.
3. Flash the zip for Sicopat :)

Weird. Ok. Another way to do it is to open CWM app and do this out of recovery.

1. Select backup
2. After the backup is complete select flash update
3. Navigate to where your KI3 zip is and flash

Still didn't work. Is there anywere else on the phone that I could change the signature verification setting while its in regular mode?

Oh so i did get that part. i'm so proud of myself.lol. I'm officially an android user now. ok. so just edit the first post. I bet it would be so useful to all canadian S2 users out there. :D

I DID IT! UI flashed Sicopat then used JKaythemes. I think i am gonna stay like this until i get bored then try a whole new custom rom. any suggestions? if ever you have a good suggestion i'll be eager to try it. And I dont care about the triangle either though anyways.lol

Yea it is. its a lot better.
Did you also notice that playing videos while auto-rotate is off make the video play while in portrait mode? its so annoying? or is it just me?

EDIT: now I'm looking forward into flashing Siyah kernel 1.7.8? what is your thoughts on this?

Thanks for the help. Sorry to act like such a noob but how to I flash the firmware? in CWM or in ODIN?

Hi Blue1K,

I just bought a used galaxy s2 and it has been already rooted. I am new to this so hope you can help me.

ANDROID VERSION - 2.3.3
Baseband Version - I9100MUGKF6
kernel Version - 2.6.35.7.I9100JPKG2-CL342890root@DELL104 #2
Build number - GINGERBREAD.UGKF6

I want to upgrade to KH3 or KI3 which I think would solve my GPS and battery life issues. Can you please help me? I want my phone to remain rooted as this phone is from Bell and I am using rogers sim card. I also would like to get rid off the yellow triangle. After reading the whole thread I am still confuse. Can you please guide me step by step process as I am new to this and don't want to screw up my phone. Greatly appreciate your help!

First off, NEVER flash a different kernel from rom.
So if you are using kg2 rom you should be using a kg2 kernel.

I meant I flashed the kh3 rom then re-rooted by flashing rooted kh3 kernel from same link on my original post.

The new kh3 rom has an improved battery saving feature. I now get about 16 hours or more of battery life with solid use (along with mods I did below)

Rooting allows you to modify the phone to your liking. One thing I noticed is that freezing certain processes after rooting improves battery life significantly.

For the Bell rom, the culprits are:

GPS Navigation from Bell
IMEI tracking
Social Hub
Wifi sharing
Wifi sharing manager

Freezing is done with an AP called titanium backup and freezes a process from restarting in the background. You can also uninstall Bell bloatware with Titanium.

Rooting also allows you install root only apps like Faster Fix which allows you to select GPS server for your area.

Finally, if you do decide to root make sure that you do a nandroid backup before trying other roms (very easy to do).

So I'm pretty new to android just came over from an iphone. I followed your steps to root and unlock and it worked perfectly just wanted to thank you for that. Now my next question is should I change to this new kh3 rom and how do I do it? Also do you need titanium pro in order to do that freezing stuff you mentioned?

Im in exact boat as you. As far as I can tell we need the Titanium Pro ($5.99?) to be able to freeze.
I think we need to DL the firmware file from the link, the XXKH3 one but from there im not sure....Then we need to root again? I also wouldnt mind being rid of the triangle..

And- Thanks Blue1 for helping me and many others!!
(New android user too, from i(gay)phone)

Heven't tried this kernel yet. I'm on miui rom right now and it doesn't support this kernel. Maybe check out xda forum?

Probably the easiest thing for you would be to download Sicopat KI3 rom which is pre-rooted and very easy to install.

Sicopat KI3

1. Open CWM app and select backup. Better safe than sorry.
2. Download the sicopat zip file using your computer. Copy it to your internal storage on your phone. I put all my roms in USBStorage folder.
3. Launch CWM app. Choose Flash update. Navigate to the USBStorage folder and flash the sicopat zip

Your phone will now be a rooted KI3 phone.

To get rid of the triangle, flash a stock XXKI3 kernel (always match kernels with current version if possible) using odin. To flash with odin use my guide on first post and select PDA and flash away.

Stock Kernels

By the way, even if your phone is no longer rooted it will still be unlocked if you previously used the unlock app.

Good luck :)
