Root HTC 4G- :( need help with root

I have been trying to update my evo 4g with a software update but it wouldnt work. My phone is rooted I think but I dont think it was rooted correctly. I would like to unroot it

welcome to he forums!!!!!!!!!!

first off if you unroot your phone you will not be able to root the traditional way after accepting the update. there is a way, but it is a pain and it will watermark your bootloader so that any tech will be able to see that you were rooted. also it will automatically void your warranty.

with that said, your phone seems to be rooted. you have s-off. do you have a custom recovery? what rom are you on? and if you really want to unroot your phone we can help. but first i would like to know where you stand on what i said first.

I dont think I have a custom recovery ....im new to this and i feel like a fish out of water. I dont really want to unroot it. not sure where to look to figure this out
 
When you go into recovery from bootloader do you get a red triangle or do you get into a recovery screen?

All you need to do is flash the updated ROM to get the new update, you never accept an over the air (OTA) update while rooted

rxpert is correct. so first go into your bootloader there should be an option for recovery select that. if you get the red triangle then you do not have a recovery. if that is the case then read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has a switching recoveries section. follow directions there and you will then have a custom recovery so that you can flash roms and make nandroid backups. also please read the guide. it has a ton of info that ill help you out. and do not worry we are here to help. we were all noobs at one time so i understand how overwhelming it can be.

ok so you are pretty much rooted then. does it say RA-Supersonic 2.3? or clockwork mod (not sure what version you might have)? amon ra is a much better recovery. if you do not have it then i wouls suggest that you use the guide to switch to amon ra.

as far as roms go i would start with MIkg3.0 it is a way better rom then stock. just download the v3.0 download link. and follow the guide in the flashing sections.
