Help HTC Desire 3g problem

I got a Desire on O2 monthly contract last week. Since then the data connection has randomly dropped even when on 3G and the 3G connection itself has been up and down too. Very annoying. A browse round the Internet indicates this is a known issue and a check on the software version shows that O2 haven't released an update which some are saying solves the problem. Even more annoying.

I'm going to complain and would encourage others to do the same. We too willingly accept these sorts of issues on what are very expensive items - and there are too many problemslike this. If mobile phone companies made aircraft, would we fly in them?

*************** POSSIBLE SOLUTION ****************

I used to have problems with mobile internet not turning on, but they have resolved now. This is what I did:

1) I called orange and let them know I had a problem, they probably did something on their side.

2) I STOPPED USING THE HTC WIDGETS that control the wifi/ mobile internet. I go through the settings -> wireless settings, in order to switch on/ off mobile internet/ wifi. I believe the widgets are the problem.

Hope this helps any frustrated HTC Desire users.

I had problems with my desire dropping connection all the time donea few searches on the forums and found a sollution thats worked for me
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Sellect phone information and scroll all the way down to the bottom
Select the set preffered network type and change to GSM auto (prl)
This has cured all my problems andivebeen running itlike this for over a month and dont worry you still get hsdpa aswell
Hope this helps
Dave

if the 3g doesnt work an you have used any widget thats not a HTC one for enabling APN here is what works for me.

Settings-Wireless + Networks -Mobile networks-Access point names.

Check the names are correct for eg
My phone is on orange and my internet access point is called Orangeinternet but sometimes a widget will change it to "orangeinternetapndisabled" think it changes a few other names too so try pressing "menu" then "reset to default" Works for me hope it works for you too.

Been having problems the last couple of days. I'm on O2 monthly and noticed that the mobile internet dropped out yesterday for a while (my colleague's Nokia lost it too, so I guess there was a network fault).

This morning I noticed that it had gone again, but my colleague could still connect. I've got the phone set to "WCDMA/GSM Auto" and have no mobile internet at all. However, if I change it to "GSM only" then I can get online (sloooooooowly). It was working ok this morning because I was showing my boss the joys of tvcatchup.

So is this a problem with the WCDMA receiver in the handset, or is it an O2 network problem? Has anyone noticed anything similar?

I'm on Orange and after rebooting my phone it takes ages to connect to the mobile network - like half an hour sometimes. Anyone had anything similar or know why it would be doing this?

I've got exactly the same issue on my new HTC Desire  no 3g mobile internet connectivity even in a strong area, it seems to be some sort of firmware issue to me, if switching between wifi and 3g it happens much sooner. The only way I can fix it is a phone shutdown (which takes an age - 20 mins or so!). Then the phone will work perfectly for a week and it starts all again. Come on HTC get an update to fix this out.

I've tried lots of option changes and airplane modes, but only the power off phone restart fixes the issue every single time.

PS my network is Orange

I phoned tech support today (thanks for the number). They said to return the phone to them as the antenna may be damaged, preventing it from picking up 3G even thought it gets H. I'll post here if they manage to fix it - fingers crossed!

Having a very similiar problem that a lot of you guys are having. I'm on o2 with my htc desire, first couple of days after getting the phone I had no problems connecting to internet ("H" symbol appeared) It was only after I switched wi-fi on that the phone decided never to switch back to 3g, I never got the "H" symbol again while using the phone in the house, only "E", which is useless. Funny thing is, when I travel about in certain areas eg. between 2 and up to 60 miles away I get full conectivity again with the "H" showing up on the phone, although I can never get it at home, only "E."

Prior to owning the HTC Desire I had an Iphone 3g and before that I had a Nokia N95, neither of which I had any problems with 3g (as I live in an area which is covered with 3g)

Nobody at o2 seems to know anything about this problem, my phone is now sent back to o2 for repair/replacement and I suspect they will just send me back the same phone with the problem still there!

After reading all the posts regarding this matter the only link that I can find relevant is the fact that a lot of people have experienced this problem after connecting to wi-fi. Could the problem be there?

Could it be possible that your network provider links your address to your router so that once you connect to that particular router you can no longer connect to 3g and are forced to use your wi-fi to save your network provider's bandwidth?

I would just love to know what exactly is causing this problem for a lot of people and for some brain-box to come up with a fix/solution.

Cheers

I had this issue.

The problem related to the program Juice Defender, which I had previously installed and then uninstalled. It turned out to have changed the apn settings. Going to settings>Wireless>mobile networks>access point names and then clicking the active apn and restoring to defaults corrected the issue.

Since I connected to WiFi the moment I got my phone out of the box, that could well explain why I have never once seen 3G on my Desire. If so, I am not confident that things will be any different when I get it back from repair, but we'll see and at least I'll be in a position to test your theory by seeing if I can get 3G before setting up WiFi.

This solved it for me

Just a heads up, I have had the same problem and had already started another thread here:

http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/103417-data-problems-htc-desire-orange.html

And there is also another thread on xda-developers:

Data connection problem on my HTC Desire - xda-developers

The problem seems to affet at leastr somone on everyt network in most countries but does seem tyo be partially location indepent.

I've also collected together all the 'fixes' that peoplehave reported some success with:

1. Using the *#*# 4636 #*#* to set GSM auto (PRL)

2. Toggling airplane mode

3. Rebooting

4. Hard reset.

5. Updating the baseband to 1.19.161.5 (but this may only be a Vodafone update) or th 1.21.405.2 HTC Update as this contains a new radio.

HTH.

I'm on o2, only got the phone on tuesday
couldnt connect to 3g, was only getting G or E.
got a new sim card from o2 but still not working. sometimes switches to H but quickly switches to G.
while connected to G i cant get phone calls (missed 2 calls)

can view webpages etc but cant watch youtube or beeb player unless its on wifi.

i've tried changing to wcdma only but this knocks out my phone reception.

has anyone had this problem resolved?

I have exactly same problem in Poland, Era network. No need to restart phone. Just change network type to GSM and back to auto. Worked for me

If only it were that simple. That didn't work for me (and anyway, you shouldn't have to keep changing network types).

I'm having this issue as well. An area that I used to get a strong 3G connection from now isn't picking one up at all.
