Hello. I have just received a 2nd hand htc a8181 pb99200.
This wont turn on eccept with the power plugged in, and only then i can get to a hboot screen.
At first i thought it could be a dodgey OS. So i downloaded and tried to install.
Shipped ROMs
and the ROM:
RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver.exe
when this runs i get to a screen that says:
ERROR [120]: LOW MAIN BATTERY POWER
The battery power is less than 30%. Please recharge the battery, then try the ROM update utitlity again.

Does this showe that the battery needs replacing?
Also when the phone came it had no microSD card. Is this needed?
or is this a operating system fault?
Thanks.

My first thought is to take it back to whoever sold it to you - if I buy something, even second hand, I expect it to work at least initially.

You won't get that RUU to run, and it's a good job because it would wreck your phone if it did! The phone model you want from shipped-ROMs is Bravo, not Desire (i.e. HTC's internal model name, not the name that was eventually used when the phone was released). I'm assuming from your name that you are in the UK, and so using a GSM phone, in which case the link I've posted there is the correct one. Do you know whether the phone was originally branded or unbranded, and if branded which network? That information would help identify the correct RUU for your phone.

The phone not turning on at all unless plugged in does suggest that the battery is terminally knackered (best case - worst would be a fault with the phone itself). You'll certainly be very limited without an SD card, but I don't think it would produce those symptoms (can't use mine to test - it's sufficiently modified that I don't think it would be a reliable indicator).

Thanks Hadron, that was a great details and knowledgable answer.
Thanks rastaman, will be returned tomorrow.

At the moment I dont know if the phone is GSM, or branded or unbranded. I will ask tomorrow when I return it back to the phone shop where i bought it.
Thanks for helping me find the correct RUU. I am quite new to phone modding. But when I do get it working id like to 'root' and 'jailbreak' it.

Also I will pick up a microSD card for it. (is it supposted to come with one?)

Thanks again. And yes I did purchase faulty goods for

When you buy a new Desire it comes with a microSD (size varies - mine came with a 4GB one).

If you are in the UK it is GSM - all European Desires are.

Good luck tomorrow.

thanks for that, ill let the shop know they owe me one.
i bought the handset 2nd hand as u can probibaly tell.

when it actually works im gonna root it.
My device has PVT1 so do i need to worry about the 40,000 part and using a terminal?

thanks again.

Correct - it's the 40,000 erase size that needs different handling, but the only devices with that are PVT-4 (not all PVT-4, just later ones), so if it's PVT-1 to PVT-3 you don't need to check erase size.
