Help HTC desire crashes and restarts randomly

I can now say for definite that mine reboots if I try to use the mobile internet. It then takes the best part of an hour to reboot properly. In between, I might get as far as the PIN code screen, then it goes off again. Otherwise, it sticks on the O2 welcome screen for ages. Still not overheating though.

Hubby has just had an upgrade on his, so hopefully mine will be following shortly.
 
Took mine in to the local Vodafone store to demonstrate the fault. It's now gone off for repair. Was very unhappy to discover that, even though it's a warranty repair, access to a courtesy phone to use in the interim is restricted to those who take out insurance through Vodafone. That, in my mind, is extremely poor customer service policy. Understandable if it was going back as an insurance repair, but not when it's going back through being a faulty device.

Was distinctly amused that once it finally crashed after several minutes (had to prove the error existed) it would then crash pretty much on demand. Including rebooting itself while it was in the middle of the power off sequence so I could remove the SIM card!

The staff initially attempted to tell me there have been no reports of such an error. I promptly informed them that there are reports all over the internet and HTC are doing warranty repairs. The attempt to deny knowledge of the fault immediately ended. Overheard a customer next to me also discussing his Desire which was in for repair as well. What are the odds it was for the same reason?
 
I called HTC last Monday to book my Desire in for repair after suffering the worsening reboot problem all over the Christmas holiday. The ticket and collection details were immediately e-mailed to me and the phone was picked up by a courier the following day.

The tracking website has kept me up to date with the progress all week and I have today received notification that it's on its way back. I know others have been waiting longer but I thought a week wasn't a bad turnaround, especially as the bloke I spoke to told me it could take "up to ten working days."

So, assuming I get my phone back in one piece and in the (mint) condition it was when I packed it, anyone having doubts about sending theirs directly to HTC needn't be too concerned if my experience is anything to go by.

Sent mine 29th December, same way as you did, was told the following week it had arrived on the 30th but not it's ready yet. Rang back the following week to be told they can't find any record of it! Was emailed another tracking number, which said my phone would be repaired once they'd received it! but they had received it!!! :mad: Got a call back last Wednesday, the 12th, to say there had been a mix up with tracking numbers their end and my phone is in the repair center. Got an email today, to say I will receive it tomorrow :rolleyes:

Well, I did up until yesterday. After two days of waiting for delivery I phoned UPS who confirmed last night that my Desire has gone missing in transit (in other words some lowlife fecker has nicked it). :mad: I've had to get HTC to raise a 'tracer' with UPS in order to obtain a replacement, and this could take "up to eight days." I hope I get a brand new handset and they don't try to fob me off with a refurb.

Oh, no. I hope I didn't jinx it.

I had "fun" with UPS as well as they cancelled their pickup for no apparent reason. Fortunately, I called to chase them and they rescheduled for later that day - but with no explanation for why they didn't come when they were meant to.

Still no system/software upgrade and still having problems when I try to use mobile internet. It's the page-loading that seems to be the problem, i.e., loading Facebook or refreshing Twitter. Seems ridiculous that I would either have to not use it or pay for wifi (say in a hotel) if I want to use it recreationally when I'm away from home.
 
It sounds very much to me like you're at the point I was about six weeks ago with my Desire. Eventually it got to the point where the reboots would start when merely using Wi-Fi with mobile data and GPS turned off. I doubt if a software update will make any difference, and you'll just have to send it back to HTC (and hope UPS don't 'lose' it!)
 
I have looked at this after my Desire started doing this.

It only really ever does it after heavy 3G use or Robodefence.

I think it is simply over heating. Im not sure if a motherboard change will actually help a great deal with this, I know people report it has but that could be down to software as well, since you no doubt have to wipe the device and start again, there is a chance that the CPU isnt being stressed as much after due to changes there.

Anyway, the real reason I bothered to post is this; Take the back cover off and look at the bottom of the phone. Under the plastic you can see copper heat sinks. These obviously spread the head BUT due to the plastic casing cant actually radiate it!!! So all it takes is for the temps to steadily rise and get to max then it shuts down.

Seems to be a fix would be to simply take the plastic off and let the heat out! Course cant do that without warranty issues. :(

Im getting a problem with crashing myself, im trying to delete threads in my text inbox, and whenever im trying to delete a big one the phone crashes and on reboot it hasnt deleted the thread, anybody come across this problem before got a way to fix it or any help with it at all? thanks

UPDATE! I have just called HTC. This is a software issue with the recent update. They are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. Its pointless returning the phone as there is nothing wrong with it. The replacement will be the same.

Thank you, I was about to take it to my shed and introduce it to the biggest hammer available. This problem with the phone shutting down is so frustrating, the phone is currently useles in it's current state and not to mention unreliablefor work or pleasure IT's a BIG FLOP.

I'm seeing what looks like a mini-reboot, every so often, sometimes 1 per minute, sometimes one per hour. The thing is, it's very quick- a flash of the HTC splash screen, then a 'loading' message, and then we're back in business. Whole cycle only takes 6-7 seconds or so.
Is this the same as everyone else?

Exactly the same problems here in Ausrtralia as all other users around the world. This phone is a real disappointment not to mention unreliable for business and pleasure. It's a pity all the fancy sales window dressing did not tell us about the problems that have been going on for so long with this device, and those AssHoles at HTC have not addressed them.

It does suck that there can be such a major flaw... Unfortunately its rife in the mobile market.

Will stick with Android but im not certain it will be HTC next, looks like maybe Samsung if the Galaxy S2 is anywhere near as good as the hype!

I've had this as well, to the point where I haven't bothered trying to delete any more threads. Can't believe hubby's phone has no issues at all and he has sh*tloads of tunes and apps downloaded but doesn't do much browsing; I'm the opposite.

O2 have responded with the usual link to the HTC website re: updating, but there are still no further updates available for my phone. Failing this I have to return it. I'm stuck with it till May 2012 and tbh I think sending me a recon replacement as it is now older than 28 days is appalling! Also, the HTC website is incorrect in that it's telling me how to set up the backup of my data; apparently I have to press Menu > Privacy > Backup etc ... but I don't get a 'Privacy' option when I press Menu? The only time I saw the 'Backup' option was when I was originally setting my phone up.

Any help on that one?

Never mind I've given in. It's going back to O2. I can't even get a successful factory reset.

Mine is being collected by UPS tomorrow (:( ulp!).

Started with the switching off malarkey a few months back when using GPS and navigation. Not noticed it since that time as I hadn't used Navigation since, until this week when it switched itself off again while using GPS and has continued to switch itself off while charging, web browsing and texting.

I did struggle to do the OTA upgrade to 2.2 in the summer as it kept hanging and freezing and it's refused to install any OTA software updates since so it's not come as a total shock that it's defective. Here's hoping it comes back fully recovered and ready to go.
 
Mine restart too, only when I use mobile internet, or any app that uses it. If I use wi-fi I can surf for as long as I want. So its going back to 3 tomorrow. Does anyone know if 3 will attempt the repair themselves or will they send it off to HTC. I'd rather it went to HTC.

I don't know what 3's policy is for repairs; I'm on O2 and when I called them to change over to the Simplicity tariff I mentioned that my phone was faulty and they said they'd handle the return to HTC for me if I sent it back to them (or took it to an O2 shop). However, after researching this reboot problem I concluded that sending it back to HTC directly was preferable, as most people seemed to be getting them back quicker this way.

Just hope UPS don't lose it en route like they did with mine. Three weeks on and I'm still waiting for a replacement. :mad:

first of all, im new here and apologies from not reading every page in this thread!
just a quick question,,,

i was really interested in the desire, until i found out about this reboot issue, just wondered if htc have ackknowledged this? and are they now manufacturing handsets without this problem!? or, if i were to nip into o2 tomorrow and buy one,, a couple of weeks down the line, id be crashing like you lot!?

Personally if I'd known about the problem I would have stayed well away from the Desire. I have had the problem fixed by sending the phone to htc, but I have not installed any games on it or anything too heavy because I am too scared that it will happen again. HTC have not officially admitted to any problem and I know of someone who has had to send his phone for repair twice, which makes me think they don't even really know what the problem is.
My advice to anyone thinking to get a Desire: don't.

Had a text today to say that O2 have received it and are working on it. Hubby still has no issues with his :(

I would reconsider if I were you, stay well away from the desire. I am so frustrated with my one, it's now gone in for repair, not sure how long I will be without it, The whole thing stilks, it seems to me that they are not even trying to resolve the problem with the Desire. The same old story once the customer is out the door they could not give a flying S#it

Hmmm. Something possibly interesting. I am turning into something of veteran of this horrible HTC Desire problem. Won't go into my personal sob story just now.

However, FYI I have recently discovered that this (mobo/construction) defect seems to principally, if not exclusively, affect all standard Desire A8181 - A8183 models with serial numbers beginning HT03 through HT08. These seem to have been princiaplly sold in the UK, Europe, Australia and Brazil.

But here's the rub. There also seems to be a whole other class of standard Desires of the same vintage, especially sold in the far East and the US with serial numbers beginning SHOA... etc.

So far, I can't find anyone with the serial number beginning SHOA models who has been lumbered with the overheating/rebooting problem.

FYI this seems to suggest that the Desires were manufactured in two distinct places and the defective types were largely sold in the UK, Europe and Australia.

The behaviour of HTC and numerous service providers in this long running debacle (which is now about a year old) in the above places has been shameful.

HTC? Never, ever, ever again!!!!!
 
Well kind of a result for me, i called my provider yesterday (orange) to inform them of the issue and what was next and was told a replaceent would be sent out to me today(i think the replacement was done as goodwill as i dont think you get a replacement if you dont take out insurance but could be wrong), i still need to test the sat nav option as that was when i had noticed the phone would reboot
