HTC Desire phone memory

Hi...I just got my desire a few weeks ago and haven't downloaded that many apps.
Now is's saying my phone storag is 58% free which is only 88.17mb. I thought the phone memory was 512 mb.
Does anyone know what happened? Any suggestions what I have to do please?

Thanks for your comments :p

The total internal memory of the desire is 512MB.

The /data partition is 147MB, which is where all of your applications are stored.

If you root & S-OFF, you can fiddle about with the partitions: AlphaRev 1.8

Ya I've been dealing with the issue of running out of internal space since I got my Desire (probably my biggest complaint with the phone). Why they restrict you that much is beyond me.

Do beware of 2 things:
First, doing S-OFF as Jammy suggested may brick your phone completely (modifies h-boot; there's warnings all over the website he linked to, but just figured I would say it again....a bricked phone is no fun :p). I looked into doing it but decided against it due to the risk.

Also, if you ever get the "Low Space" warning in your status bar you will not be able to receive text messages until you free up space. All you will get is a notification saying that 1 or more text messages have been missed and to free up space. This happens at around 15 Mb free internal space. Most of the time the texts come after you've freed up space, sometimes they do not however and you just never get them.

Enjoy the Desire!

Cheers,
Bob

There's a risk, sure, but it's pretty minimal. AlphaRev has a number of safeguards in place and if one 'baby step' goes wrong, it doesn't go ahead with the serious bits (HBOOT flashing).

If you do a bit of homework, charge your phone fully, and check the integrity of the AlphaRev ISO before you burn it, it's really not so dangerous. That isn't to say I didn't break a sweat the first time I did it -- but I still get a little nervous during that first minutes-long boot after flashing a ROM and I've done it dozens of times on multiple phones of different generations. :)

Please read up again and again before attempting any of the proceedures above. You should understand what everything means and how it works before taking the leap.

The faqs in my Sig may come in useful.

If you don't fancy going down the S-OFF root you could also root your Desire and flash a custom ROM which supports A2SD+.
I also recommend flashing a custom ROM to resolve your space issue. My Desire is currently running a Modaco custom ROM and "Data2Whatever [0.2e]". I have 157 apps on my phone (including the standard email, messaging, etc.) and still have 181 mb free space :D

Modaco R9 rom
22/Oct r9 - WITH SENSE: MoDaCo Custom ROM for HTC Desire with Online Kitchen (2.2 / Froyo) - Android @ MoDaCo

"Data2Whatever"
[DATA2whatever] Flashable All-in-one-data2sd-Solution v0.2e + v0.4 test (dec 27th) - xda-developers

Thanks very much all!! I'll 'study' the rooting today :D

A couple of weeks study AT LEAST! More the better.

Look and ye shall find. All will become clear. Anything still obscured by the muddy waters of the River Root are probably mentioned somewhere in danfrance's signature.... ;)

Dan also accepts Visa, Amex and Green Stamps. :D

Psshhh, I did a couple of hours research before rooting my phone, and this was in the days before we had DanFrance to fix every mistake :p

When was that? The Stone Age? :D
Dude seems like an institution over here. Can't seem to recall a time when he wasn't around answering every noob's (sometimes) dumb questions (mine included).

I just enjoy it so if I don't know the answer, I'll try to find it too. then I know it for next time. Its because I do that for a living anyway, but I'm currently not so I need to vent somehow ;)
