HTC Desire Tips & Tricks [READ ME]

Hi all,

New to Android and having had my Desire for one whole day, I am thoroughly pleased I ditched my iPhone!

Anyway, something that I havent seen covered in this thread is getting the contacts from iPhone (or anywhere else) to the Desire without ending with loads of duplicates.

Attempt one was to export the iPhone contacts to my Gmail by way of using the Windows Address Book, which worked but I found most of my contacts had no numbers to their name! I then ditched WAB and synchronised the iPhone contacts to Outlook (which is linked to my Gmail account). I then sync'd the Desire to Outlook and that pulled in all the contacts. My first attempt failed miserably as the silly iPhone had put 90 of my 175 contact's phone numbers under 'other' field. Outlook didnt recognise this field when sending the contacts to the Desire.

I then had to go back to the iPhone and manually change all the fields on that and list them all under 'mobile' or 'home'. Re-synced and it amended all the contacts which meant I had a full list of contacts that I could use.

Why not amend the details in Outlook you say? Because its listed as 'other', the data is just held as a block of text and cannot be changed for some reason.

So my newbie tip here is to make sure that when you are importing contacts from elsewhere, make sure to have all the right details in the right fields.

Hope that helps,
Atik

HI Can you help.

I have an HTC desire... it double all my contact up so now i have two of every thing and my phone memorie is now low.

Thanks sorry if its a bit garbled my first time.

Here is my (totally rhetorical, it seems) reply to my own query (also rhetorical):

OK, so after having nose about this site and finding a few other people complaining of the same storage/contact/space issues, I noticed that somebody mentioned that they'd had success with clearing their 'contact storage' data, so I gave it a go and serendipitously enough, it flipping worked. I totally can't have FB on active sync duties either, but that's fine. I really do think that this pain in the arse glitch should be sorted out at source, however- not everyone has the resources nor the inclination to go trawling websites for solutions to 'phone-based problems and for such an advanced piece of kit, it seems strange that there's no cap on how many times a contact from the same source can be suggested and it's beyond me why it's then kept on the 'phone to slowly (or actually quite swiftly) fill the thing up so that it comes to a grinding shoe-thrown-into-the-works stasis and also I genuinely don't get why programmes and the like are sent to the 'phone- it's not as if we couldn't back everything up to the PC quite easily if the memory card was being upgraded or whathaveyou- I'm sure that it wouldn't be too much of a chore for some HTC minion to write that into the HTC Sync.exe, right? Yes, I can root the thing- no, I've never done it before, but am quietly confident that the comprehensive instructions detailed on this very site will see me in good stead. I'd give this 'phone a 4.8 styled rating IF none of the strangely obvious issues existed but, as is, it drops a whole star for all the nonsense that I've had to go through. As do HTC generally.

Rant ends.

My WiFi has stopped working :/

It was working perfectly until two days ago, it can't connect anymore.
It says 'obtaining IP address' and then fails. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Sounds like the DHCP server on your wireless router may have gone down. I would try rebooting your router and that should sort you out.

Battety saving tip!

I have tried everything to get longer battery, Even bought the extended battery with the bigger case on the back of the phone, It didnt even last as long as the original!!!

The best way for me and if you are willing to do so is to turn off the 3G down to GSM only and it will save your battery buy a large amount.

When you are in an area that does not have a 3G signal your phone constantly tries to find the signal and in doing this will drain the battery even when the phone is idle.

Give it a try, Hopefully you will notice the benefits i have.

Settings>
Wireless&Networks>
Mobile Networks>
Network Mode>
Then change to GSM only. DONE!

hi, this seems to be the palce to ask for help?
im a complete newbie to android, ive got a htc desire and ive only had it a wek and a half, i do absolutely love it but need help with a couple of things.
im on orange so called unlimited internet but really capped at 500mb, ive downloaded the widget to track usage but the issue is more for when im at work (at home i use my wifi) my battery is fine, however when i go to work i can only get "G" as the internet and my battery goes down super fast but the main prob is my data usage goes mental, i used 23mb over a 24 hour shift even with uninstalling 97% of my apps and switching the mobile internet off, i found it still being used so i kept turning my phone off, i can see in settings what uses the data and ive uninstalled some but im worried ill get rid of something ill need (i uninstalled orange world and my phone switched itself off!) im worried about using all my MB when im not even near my phone is there anything that really stops all my MB being consumed? does turning my phone off totally stop it?
sorry for huge long panic rant, i love my phone but dont want a huge bill for going over oranges not unlimited internet
any advice please? thank you
new to the forum, can't remember if anyone said this later, but;

go to settings>location

make sure that 'use wireless networks' isn't selected.

saw this tip somewhere else after noticing crazy data racking up with no apps running - the location constantly updates using any activated mobile network even if no apps are running that require it, so disable this feature and just activate it and/or GPS when you need it for something specific.

I've found a small problem with my unbranded Desire on Orange since the 2.2 update, maybe it's nothing to do with the update I don't know.

Basically I only switch internet on when I need it but recently when I try (Wireless and networks - Mobile Network- Connect to internet) it says Turning on as it should but it sometimes doesn't connect but just continually says turning on and I can't cancel it as it's greyed out.

Maybe it's because of sketchy coverage but it's eating up battery life trying to connect and might keep trying for 20 mins + until it eventually finds a signal. I've even tried turning it off then back on but it doesn't cancel the request.

Anyone else had this or know how to cancel the request?

I had just the same with my HTC Desire when I first moved to v2.2. It only happened once but I had the same symptoms. I just rebooted the phone and it was OK for ever after.... I think it got into a bad loop which it couldn't get out of....

Do you have a widget for turning on mobile internet that you downloaded from the Market? If so, I'd uninstall that to see if it the problem goes away.

Unh.

Help needed please from a newbie ! :o My Desire got wet,I immediately took it apart, left it in front of a heat gun gently warming it dry,i put it back together and it worked perfectly, (made a call, send 2 messages,it remembered all setting except date)I then picked it up an hour or so later to find it dead,i have tried to switch it on and tried a few other techniques like holding down the Power and Home button etc to no avail,it did however turn on once and the screen gave some options of Reboot/Bootloader etc in small writing, white screen with baby androids at the bottom,I could switch between options using the Volume buttom but couldn't select anything,it then went dead again and nothing since, any ideas please? go easy I'm pretty new to this!

Cheers for the reply, It seems to be behaving itself now, must have been the problems with Orange

Hi all,
Have had my Desire a few weeks now after a Hero and am loving it.
I have just tried to find the Google Earth app on the market and i am unable to find it....I found the QR code earlier in this thread and that says it cannot find it.
I have an Orange branded Desire still on 2.1
Does anyone know why I cant find it?

Thanks,

Ben

hiya, having problems with hotmail-posted this elsewhere, but this seems to be the place to be:)

"How come this used to work, but in recent weeks it has failed? About a week or so ago, I was receiving emails ok through the mail app, using hotmail. Then as a security measure, hotmail logged me out on my work pc. When I set everything up again, it went t'ts up.

I no longer receive updates as per the schedule I set it for, I receive no notifications in the menu bar, nor alert sounds. What's happened?!

I tried deleting the account and setting up manually, and some emails came through from earlier today, but STILL the schedule's not working."

Anyone? Thanks in advance:)

hi

quick question how do i updated to 2.2

thanks dave
menu/ settings/about phone/system software updates/check now.

Can you help? Is it possible to have notification sound for emails inhibited (gmail in my case) but still retaining normal ringtone for voice calls. I have a a very annoyed wife who who was woken from her beauty sleep at 1am this morning! I have been into settings but only seem to be able alter the notification sound choice.
menu/settings/sound/volume/ then drag the notification bar far left.

One new thing i've just found...

In Messages, if you long press on the photo of the person, it comes up with a Quick Contact Shortcut, to either call, email, SMS, Locate the person (depending on what details are stored for the contact).

These tips have been of great help (as has been the entire forum) but I can't find anything on a problem I'm stuck with: on all phones I've ever had I used the option of an increasing ringer volume. (incoming call notification starts with low volume sound, it increases until you pick it up)
I can't find it anywhere in HTC's Sense on Android 2.2. Any fixes to this or am I really the only idiot missing the feature? Thanks!

Hi Great forum and topic. Heaps of useful stuff.

My Desire has stopped vibrating on incoming calls and the haptic feedback during dialing seems to have stopped. Can anyone give me any clues on how to fix the problem(s)?

Cheers.
