HTC Evo Complaints

OK, I'm leaving this forum and won't be back. I expected more from Google. If a phone can't save an email message or simply move a picture and that doesn't seem kind of crazy to you, then you are a Fan Boy.

I guess I will have to see if the New Blackberrys are any better at fun, since Google can't do hard things like remove Sprint from the screen.

lol i wish i had seen this earlier i would have sold you the 9650 i just returned to sprint. BBM is awesome, email is awesome went it works.
The phone it self is okay, the keyboard is okay as well. The browsing experience is horrible. Any type of browsing is just brutal. Reception is about 1.5 bars lower than both my room mates phones. Which are g1's and Iphones respectively.

I just left BB for the very same thing. As my primary phone simple things like receiving emails and not restarting or going to sleep when i didn't want it to. Try using gps or face book, or twitter or any social media sites on BB see what that's like and then seriously view the overall experience of the phone and say you aren't disappointed with BB.

BBM is awesome best messenger service i have found. Really hard to keep a phone for that reason only. Good luck and good times!!!!!!

facebook on the evo is a joke but better than bb. No one can top facebook for iphone app.

I few of the items might be personal preference like the keyboard. But when you are told by HTC that there is no way to put your name on the screen if you lose it or to voice dial using your headset, you get frustrated. I don't think of those as personal preference, simple things like that should be on phone by default.

The iPhone can't do any of the things you're talking about and that was designed by Jesus Christ, how can you expect Google to do it? In all seriousness you though, Android is still very new and updating at a frantic pace, they are trying to cover as much as they can as fast as they can.

I would just return the EVO within your 30 days and move on.

I have to agree with the person on the complaints. I too have an Evo and I am not impressed. I have used Linux a lot in the past. With Linux there is almost nothing you can't do or customize. When I found out that Android was built on the Linux kernal I was excited. But then you get the phone and there is a lot you can't do. I think that is what the person complaining about the phone was trying to say. Not every phone is for everyone, but an open source phone should be able to be customized how you want it. You don't use your phone for business and want Facebook, Twitter, etc. that is what you should get. But if someone would like an open source phone and would like to use it for business, there is no reason they should not be able to have it the way they want. I thought about buying an Iphone but didn't like how Apple had the phone "locked down", so I got the Evo. Just like the author stated if you can't take Sprint off a screen or delete several rss messages at a time, that is locked down. It is a great phone, but there is already a phone on the market you can't configure how you want called the Iphone. So really Google needs to loosen the reins a bit more. I know you can root, but not everyone is going to comfortable doing that.

You mean Facebook for android I assume. The fact is yes the iPhone has the best android app but the android one is not garbage as you would assume. Out of my old blackberry, my old pre and android I would put android in second behind my ipod touch

Yes, I agree the post was misleading, that the complaints should have been with Android. The phone itself is pretty nice. But the person stated they didn't know who was at fault. I can understand that. Maybe Sprint doesn't want their name removed from the screen or can't be done with the HTC firmware or something like that.

I have spent time on an HTC forum and Evo forum on other sites. And I have seen other people having a lot of the same complaints. I would like to be able to do a few of them myself, but I would not get rid of the phone because I can't. Is there an official way to submit request to Google about the OS?

I will take it a step further....

You can use facebook for Android

You can use facebook for HTC Sense

You can use m.facebook.com on the browser

Or you can use the full site.....facebook.com on the browser

I personally like the mobile site. It has everything the full site does just compressed down a bit.

It is kind of funny, when I first read the thread, I thought the person might not be very technical. I work in IT and hear all the time from users you can't do things you can do. I thought I know you can do some of those things. But frankly, I couldn't figure out how to do some of them either. I don't use the default news reader, but I configured it and pick out my feeds and updated them. It has over 600 news items and I also couldn't figure out how to delete more than one at a time. I can see how little things like that would frustrate someone.

Yea the default new reader is a lil perplexing that they left that out, I havent tried other readers yet however. I was actually hoping to find a google reader app.

Checking out Google Product Ideas might be a good place.

play nice, children.
it's just a phone, and this platform is very new to alot of people (including me). i'm coming from a blackberry, so i know there is a learning curve. but i'm afraid to ask any questions on here for fear of being eaten alive from some of you!

4. Why is there no actual spell check and not predictive typing? It really slows me down to have to always double check what the system is changing my words to, example Yoda becomes soda. If you turn it off, you get nothing.
9. It would be nice to have a light for my HD camcorder, doesn't work all that well in low light.

**And the biggest problem, no bluetooth voice dial????

Someone may have already answered the above questions for you... I just quickly browsed through the replies... but of what I know:

4.) You can enabled spell correction under Settings > Language & Keyboard > Touch Input > Tex input > Spell Correction (off by default)
I think this will do what you are looking for.

9.) Will be added in 2.2

Bluetooth Voice Dialing - Will be added in 2.2

Check out Android 2.2 Platform Highlights | Android Developers for more info on what's coming.

I think the evo is a great phone and android is what it is. I don't have any complaints but I would love to have this phone running Windows Phone 7. I also didn't have any complaints with my TP. Just wanted something new.

WP7 will be very important for microsoft, i wish them luck, my line can still upgrade if something better comes along but im really satisfied so far.

I have had my EVO since it was released and I do like it. A lot! That being said, I too agree with many of the posters complaints (not enough to get rid of it mind you). Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think the frustration came from the fact that he was attacked first and helped second. Most of the suggestions given to him were just root the phone, which not everyone is comfortable doing (and many more shouldn't even try) and a few download an app and he had to read through several attacks and several more "solutions" that he had already said were not options for him i.e. rooting; before he got to the people who had actually posted helpful answers or rather answers that were helpful to him. I personally don't understand not having a file explorer already installed or built in but que serra, serra! I think the guy originally posted his comment looking for help w/ those problems or maybe just to vent and hope to find people who would be helpful in finding solutions, but I've never seen a post so harshly attacked like this one was. It makes a person wary of asking a question on here.

Talk about resurrecting the thread! 200th post btw. I'd like to thank Sprint, for giving me this EVO. The Mods, you all are great. I'd like to thank my mom, without her labor I wouldn't typing this today. Thank you all...

But seriously, I think you will find people more accommodating if you simply ask your question/state your problem right up front, rather than "rant". I'm far more likely to help someone out who comes across in a measured, reasonable tone. I just don't sympathize with ranters. Even if I can see where they are coming from.

For about the last 6 years or so I have had some kind of smart phone. I have had Blackberries and Palms. I thought I would give Android a try. There are some things about the OS that are nice, but there are some things that are way to hard to do or things you can't do at all. For example:

By the way I am using a HTC Evo with Android 2.1

1. Why can't you simply save an email message with a POP account? You can move it to another folder but can't simply create a new folder called saved.
2. The default news reader is nice, but why can't you select all to delete? Deleting one by one is insane.
3. When taking a picture, why can't I move that pictures to a new folder, instead of leaving it in the camera folder?
4. Why is there no actual spell check and not predictive typing? It really slows me down to have to always double check what the system is changing my words to, example Yoda becomes soda. If you turn it off, you get nothing.
5. Why is there no backup feature?
6. There needs to be better control of apps on your phone. I have set stocks and a few others to not update automatically but they do it anyway.
7. There needs to be some way to disable or at least hide icons you don't use. There is already enough apps I have to scroll through without seeing Nascar and others I don't use nor want.
8. Battery life has to be improved. I mobile device I have to always keep plugged in is useless. That might be hardware but also might be the apps trying to update, I set to don't update.
9. It would be nice to have a light for my HD camcorder, doesn't work all that well in low light.
10. No music over mono bluetooth option? You can start a phone call then click music and play it over your headset until you hang up. So it works so why don't I have that option all the time? Would be perfect for pod cast.
11. You can't change the default greeting on the locked screen. All other phones you can. All it says is Sprint, so if you lose your phone your out of luck if you have a locked pattern.

**And the biggest problem, no bluetooth voice dial???? Every phone I have had would do this, even the cheap ones I got for free. It is against the law in a lot of states to use the phone while driving, yet this phone does not support that feature????

I know some might say that there might be an app for some of these things or that you can attach the phone to your PC to do some of them, but really these should be included by default. My older smart phones could do them, so shouldn't a "new" one be able to. So far I'm not too impressed with this phone but I don't know where the fault lies. With Sprint, HTC, or Android????

My biggest complaint has to be the battery. But, I also agree that we should be able to hide the icons and get rid of apps we don't use that came with the phone.

Why do people complain about the stock battery?

1. They could easily purchase a 1750 mah battery from Seidio which will not require a larger door.

2. They didn't initialize their battery upon receipt of the phone.

3. The person phone settings are jacked up because they are a noobie, therefore the battery drains on the phone.

I tweaked 4 EVOs in my squadron in order to give more battery juice to the user. Haven't had one complaint yet.

now im fully aware that is is an old post, but is this guy serious? sheesh..... i wonder if he still has his evo, and if so, does he cry about it still? lol ugh ::facepalm::

Your average EVO user falls into this category. Would you be happy with a car that needs modifications to get you from point a to point b? People almost have to do this with their EVOs (allbeit they do it to keep the thing powered for a measly day)

Don't know your age bro, but I wouldn't buy a car if I knew it needed modifications and I couldn't handle doing the modifications on my own. My man EarlyMon will tell you I doctored the battery tweaks thread for the EVO. The way to keep the battery juice in your phone and I released that information on Sprintusers before the Android website. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-tips-tricks/150799-battery-tweaks-htc-evo-4g.html

Anyway, people have the "I need that now mentality" and those individuals don't even come close to understanding the Android platform. They saw someone else with the phone, now they want one too. Everyone who purchased an EVO in my squadron I had to help them set up their phone. I spent a day playing with every setting on my phone, hence I was able to pass on the knowledge about the EVO's battery. I have seen people who don't understand basic settings and functions with the phone. Its their first Android phone.

HTC built a phone with all the bells and whistles on that drain the battery. HTC figured people would have the fortitude to turn off what they don't use on the phone. What makes a smartphone smart? The user controls the phone and determines what Android will or will not do. Saw lots of people complaining about the work involves to set up the EVO 4G. Well, people should have done their research about Android before buying the phone.

All you have to do is download avg and it will let you put your name on the lockscreen
